The kernel build uses various tools, many of which are provided by the same software suite, for example, LLVM and Binutils. When you raise the minimum version of Clang/LLVM, you need to update clang_min_version in scripts/cc-version.sh and also lld_min_version in scripts/ld-version.sh. Kbuild can handle CC=clang and LD=ld.lld independently, but it does not make much sense to maintain their versions separately. Let's create a central place of minimum tool versions so you do not need to touch multiple files. scripts/min-tool-version.sh prints the minimum version of the given tool. Linux kernel

There are several guides for kernel developers and users. These guides can
be rendered in a number of formats, like HTML and PDF. Please read
Documentation/admin-guide/README.rst first.
In order to build the documentation, use ``make htmldocs`` or
``make pdfdocs``. The formatted documentation can also be read online at:
https://www.kernel.org/doc/html/latest/
There are various text files in the Documentation/ subdirectory,
several of them using the Restructured Text markup notation.
Please read the Documentation/process/changes.rst file, as it contains the
requirements for building and running the kernel, and information about
the problems which may result by upgrading your kernel.
