Protected Execution Facility (PEF) is an architectural change for POWER 9 that enables Secure Virtual Machines (SVMs). When enabled, PEF adds a new higher privileged mode, called Ultravisor mode, to POWER architecture. Along with the new mode there is new firmware called the Protected Execution Ultravisor (or Ultravisor for short). POWER 9 DD2.3 chips (PVR=0x004e1203) or greater will be PEF-capable. Attached documentation provides an overview of PEF and defines the API for various interfaces that must be implemented in the Ultravisor firmware as well as in the KVM Hypervisor. There are several guides for kernel developers and users. These guides can
be rendered in a number of formats, like HTML and PDF. Please read
Documentation/admin-guide/README.rst first.
In order to build the documentation, use ``make htmldocs`` or
``make pdfdocs``. The formatted documentation can also be read online at:
https://www.kernel.org/doc/html/latest/
There are various text files in the Documentation/ subdirectory,
several of them using the Restructured Text markup notation.
Please read the Documentation/process/changes.rst file, as it contains the
requirements for building and running the kernel, and information about
the problems which may result by upgrading your kernel.
