Tracing used the priv pointer as an identifier,
which has the problem that we don't have it in
all code, and also some people say no pointers
should be "leaked" to userspace.
Use the device name instead, it is more useful
anyway.

As iwl_prepare_card_hw() is idempotent (and
many cards support AMT anyway) there's no
point in calling iwl_prepare_card_hw() only
for AMT capable devices -- call it always
and simplify the code that way.

The transport layer should only check the
hardware RF kill status, not impose any
policy or reaction based on it, so move
that out of it into the op_mode.
For now keep the restriction on loading
firmware, that will have to be removed
later.

The fact that the mutex must be held is an
implementation detail of DVM, but something
has to ensure that no two synchronous cmds
are submitted concurrently. Move the lockdep
assertion into the DVM-specific code, but
also make the transport abort if there are
two concurrently commands.
The assertion is much more useful though as
the transport check can only catch it when
it actually happens, while the assertion
makes sure it can't possibly happen.

Currently, we cannot send any commands when the
uCode is in RF or CT kill, but that will not be
true for all new uCode versions, so we need to
move the check into the uCode specific code.
Also remove the duplicate rfkill check.

Add wrappers to send commands from the DVM
op-mode (which essentially consists of the
current driver). This will allow us to move
specific sanity checks there.
Also, this removes iwl_trans_send_cmd_pdu()
since that can now be taken care of in the
DVM-specific wrapper.

This file was recently introduced, but then
directly abused -- it contained private data
that shouldn't have been used by anything
but the implementation of firmware requests
and some very core code. Now that it is no
longer accessed by any code but the code in
iwl-drv.c, we can dissolve it.
Also rename the iwl_nic struct to iwl_drv to
better reflect where and how it is used.

Through the driver, struct iwl_fw will
store the firmware. Split this out into
a separate file, iwl-fw.h, and make all
other code use it. To do this, also move
the log pointers into it, and remove the
knowledge of "nic" from everything.
Now the op_mode has a fw pointer, and
(unfortunately) for now the shared data
also needs to keep one for the transport
to access dump the error log -- I think
that will move later.
Since I wanted to constify the firmware
pointers, some more changes were needed.

uCode loading belongs to the op_mode, as it
is dependent on various things there and the
commands sent during it are specific to it.
Move the prototypes to iwl-agn.h to indicate
this. To make this possible, also move all
the calibration handling (which is op_mode
dependent after all).

On A-MPDU frames, the hardware only reports valid signal strength data for
the last subframe. The driver also mangled rx_stats->rs_rssi using the
ATH_EP_RND macro in a way that may make sense for ANI, but definitely
not for reporting to mac80211.
This patch changes the code to calculate the signal strength from the rssi
directly instead of taking the average value, and flag everything but
the last subframe in an A-MPDU to tell mac80211 to ignore the signal strength
entirely, fixing signal strength fluctuation issues reported by various
users.

The way this is implemented (simply storing the last value) is absolutely
worthless for debugging anything, and the same information is also available
through the MAC sample feature, so there's no point in keeping this around.

The SET_PORT functions are implemented in port.c, which is part
of mlx4_core, these functions are exported. The functions are in use by
the mlx4_en module (were originally part of mlx4_en).
Their declaration remained in mlx4_en module, moving the declaration to the right location.

The mac should be written as __be64 the gid. The warning was because
we changed the mac parameter, which is u64, by writing result of cpu_to_be64
into it. Fixing by using new variable of type __be64.

The keys used for the hardware RSS topelitz hash are of type __be32
where the values provided by the driver are from array of u32,
this triggered sparse warning on incorrect type in assignment as of different base types.
Since these values are picked randomly,
the fix is to transform the key to __be32 by executing cpu_to_be_32()

The blue flame buffer is defined to be of type void __iomem *
but was passed to mlx4_bf_copy which gets unsigned long * .
This triggered sparse warning on different address spaces,
fix that by changing mlx4_bf_copy first param to be of type void __iomem * .

Localized the pdev->dev, and using dma_map instead of pci_map
There are multiple map/unmap operations on data path,
optimizing those by saving redundant pointer access.
Those places were identified as hot-spots when running kernel profiling
during some benchmarks.
The fixes had most impact when testing packet rate with small packets,
reducing several % from CPU load, and in some case being the difference
between reaching wire speed or being CPU bound.

All other Atheros drivers run the AGC gain calibration and DC offset
calibration only after reset. Running them periodically has caused stability
issues on some (primarily AR2315/2413/5413/5414 based) devices, leading to
messages such as:
ath5k phy0: gain calibration timeout (2462MHz)
ath5k phy0: calibration of channel 11 failed

Some calibration types interfere with tx activity, but the queue stop does
not prevent that. In fact, some calibration types need tx activity to properly
function, so stopping the queues for them is counterproductive.
In some tests this patch has been shown to improve stability, especially in
AP or ad-hoc mode.

My patch "iwlwifi: simplify auth/assoc flow"
caused a serious throughput degradation due
to me forgetting that there are HT settings
in the station table. To restore throughput,
set these parameters correctly when the sta
moves to assoc state.
This patch should probably be merged with
the auth/assoc redesign patch for upstream.
In that case, this paragraph should be added
to the commit log as the third paragraph
(before talking about RXON):
However, as we only get the station HT data
when the station moves into assoc state, we
also need to program this into the device
(and copy it into our database) then.

struct iwl_rx_mem_buffer implementation details
(DMA address, list pointers) that the upper
layers don't need. Introduce iwl_rx_cmd_buffer
that is passed upstream and only contains the
needed data (the page). Additionally, access
this data only via accessor functions, allowing
us to change the implementation in the future.
These accessors are rxb_addr() (as before) and
rxb_steal_page() to take ownership of the data.

When CMD_WANT_SKB is set for a (synchronous)
command, the response is passed back to the
caller which is then responsible for freeing
it. Make this more abstract with real API,
passing directly the response packet in the
new cmd.resp_pkt member and also introduce
iwl_free_resp() to free the pages -- this
way the upper layers don't have to directly
touch the page implementation.
NOTE: This breaks IDI -- the new code isn't reflected there yet!

We currently use the _irqsafe version, but that
isn't recommended together with ieee80211_rx()
as it can cause races. If the device reports
a TX-status and RX in that order then with the
current combination mac80211 might process them
in the other order, which can cause issues with
powersaving clients.
Use ieee80211_tx_status() to avoid this race.
Since we don't want to call it with locks held,
process the frame queues later -- this is fine
as they are on the stack.

In the WoWLAN suspend flow, instead of accessing
registers directly, ask the transport to do the
required setup at the end of suspend. If the
transport doesn't implement this, don't tell the
stack we support WoWLAN.
When the device suspends w/o WoWLAN, mac80211
will have stopped it already, which has already
called iwl_apm_stop() via stop_hw(). Thus, it
isn't necessary to call it again in pcie_suspend
and we can simply do nothing there.
This unifies the regular and WoWLAN suspend.

It's not really a good idea to write to the
global static configuration. Use the valid
TX/RX antenna information only from the HW
params struct except in the case where the
values from the config are used to override
the values from the EEPROM.

There's no SKU override, we always just use
it from EEPROM. As such, we can remove it
from the config and use it in hw_param only.
Since iwl_eeprom_check_sku() really needs
to fill it in also rename that to
iwl_eeprom_init_hw_params().

With mac80211 now giving us station information
(via the sta_state callback) before auth/assoc
we can get rid of tx_sync by adding the station
early for the case of managed interfaces. Keep
AP mode actions the same for now.
As we now get the BSSID early, we can also get
rid of iwl_reprogram_ap_sta().
We can still optimise the number of RXONs we
send to the device, but that can be done later.

There's no reason to set EXIT_PENDING when we
start removing the module, as mac80211 will
cleanly shut down the device in this case.
Additionally, there's no point in rejecting
commands to the device when we're cleaning up
as that only leads to unwanted errors from
mac80211 being printed, such as
failed to remove key (...) from hardware (-16)

Some data doesn't need protection, some of the
lock places are simply useless, and some data
can be protected with the mutex instead. Thus

In the powersave related functions we only need
to set a few parameters for the station command

When we TX, we hold the sta_lock for a long
time, a lot of which isn't needed. Reduce
the time we hold the lock. Note that this
doesn't really change anything as the code
is already under the other spinlock, but it
makes the code easier to read.

We should be doing a shift (1 << FLAG_RADIO_DOWN) here before testing
the flag. As luck would have it, this test works almost correctly.
The current code tests for FLAG_RADIO_OFF instead of FLAG_RADIO_DOWN.

If we only monitor while associated, the following
can happen:
- we're associated, and the queue stuck check
runs, setting the queue "touch" time to X
- we disassociate, stopping the monitoring,
which leaves the time set to X
- almost 2s later, we associate, and enqueue
a frame
- before the frame is transmitted, we monitor
for stuck queues, and find the time set to
X, although it is now later than X + 2000ms,
so we decide that the queue is stuck and
erroneously restart the device
It happens more with P2P because there we can
go between associated/unassociated frequently.

Driver rtl8192ce when used with the RTL8188CE device would start at about
20 Mbps on a 54 Mbps connection, but quickly drop to 1 Mbps. One of the
symptoms is that the AP would need to retransmit each packet 4 of 5 times
before the driver would acknowledge it. Recovery is possible only by
unloading and reloading the driver. This problem was reported at
https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=770207.
The problem is due to a missing update of the gain setting.

This patch allows the possibility of having the mesh point and AP to be operated
simultaneously in one single radio. Previously, mesh point fails to generate the

With runtime PM, if the ethernet cable is disconnected, the device is
transitioned to D3 state to conserve energy. If the system is shutdown
in this state, any register accesses in rtl_shutdown are dropped on
the floor. As the device was programmed by .runtime_suspend() to wake
on link changes, it is thus brought back up as soon as the link recovers.
Resuming every suspended device through the driver core would slow things
down and it is not clear how many devices really need it now.

Generate a test event on each event queue whenever the interface is
brought up, then after 1 second check that we have either handled a
test event or handled another IRQ for each event queue.

In case all event queues are broken for some reason, this means it
will only take about a second to check them all, rather than up to 32
seconds. This may also speed up testing in the successful case.

IRQ latency can be ridiculously high for various reasons, so our
current timeouts of 100 ms or 10 ms are too short.
Change the IRQ and event tests to use polling loops starting with a
delay of 1 tick and doubling that if necessary up to a maximum total
delay of approximately 1 second.
Raise the loopback packet RX timeout to 1 second.

RX and TX completions on the same event queue are generally not associated
with the same flows. The inclusion of TX completions in the adaptive IRQ
score is more of a source of noise rather than useful feedback. Therefore,
do not include them in the score, and adjust the default threshold scores
down.

updating the owner bit in the hardware Tx descriptor (E. Dumazet)
- avoid useless tp->dev dereferencing in start_xmit (E. Dumazet)
Use of netdev_reset_queue is favored over proper accounting in
rtl8169_tx_clear_range since the latter would need more work for the
same result (nb: said accounting degenerates to nothing in xmit_frags).

In 'ql_adapter_initialize'
the first call for 'spin_unlock_irqrestore()' is with hw_flags = 0,
which is as good as 'spin_unlock_irq()' (unconditional interrupt
enabling). If this is intended, then for better performance
'spin_unlock_irqrestore()' can be replaced with 'spin_unlock_irq()'
and 'spin_lock_irqsave()' can be replaced by 'spin_lock_irq()

The module init function of brcmfmac calls init functions for SDIO and
USB doing driver registration. This patch removes terminating the module
init when a driver registration for one host interface fails.

The usb code defines a structure for counting statistics. However,
it should use the statistics entry provided in brcmf_bus as that is
exposed to the net_device. The usb private statistics counter only
remains with counters for control packets between driver and usb
device.

In brcmf_usb_up() the variable devinfo was checked for being
a NULL pointer, but this can not happen. Also the check was done
after dereferencing the pointer. This patch removes the check.

When driver rtl8192cu is used with the debug level set to 3 or greater,
the result is "sleeping function called from invalid context" due to
an rcu_read_lock() call in the DM refresh routine in driver rtl8192c.
This lock is not necessary as the USB driver does not use the struct
being protected, thus the lock is set only when a PCI interface is
active.

In usb.c, routine _rtl_usb_init_sw() always returns 0, and rtl_usb_probe()
never checks the returned value. Thus we can change _rtl_usb_init_sw() to
a void routine. In addition, remove the underscore at the beginning of the
name of the routine.

In the unlikely event of a misread of the USB end point count, the driver
generates a divide fault. To prevent this, add a check of the value
returned by _rtl_usb_init(). In addition, add some logging to indicate
why the condition occurred.

In mwifiex_drv_change_adhoc_chan() we pass channel to
mwifiex_bss_ioctl_ibss_channel() which sets the high 16 bits. This
works on little endian systems but not on big endian ones. I've changed
mwifiex_drv_change_adhoc_chan() to use a 16 bit variable. This matches
the other functions in the file.
I considered changing mwifiex_change_adhoc_chan() as well but it turns
out that the function isn't implemented so I just removed the
definition.

'beacon_period' in 'struct ndis_80211_conf' is __le32 instead of __le16 so
le32_to_cpu must be used instead of le16_to_cpu.
Also correct 'beacon_interval' variables used for passing this value forward
from u16 to u32 and rename those variables 'beacon_period' This is to avoid
confusion because 'beacon_interval' is defined as __le16 at other structure,
'struct ndis_80211_fixed_ies'.

When using the bcm5354 (Soc with integrated LP-PHY Wifi) with a recent
firmware >= 478.104 it runs out of memory after a very short time in
OpenWrt after doing an active scan or any thing else where packages are
send. This was cased by a gpio misconfiguration, the firmware triggered
the GPIO pins used for buttons on some devices and that caused an other
driver (OpenWrt diag) listening for these buttons irqs to send many
messages to the user space.
This patch fixes the bug for my devices (Asus WL-520GU) and makes it
work with firmware 666.2. Now the firmware just uses LED GPIO pin
number 1 and not the button pins any more.

Currently if valid SSID list is provided in scan request, driver
performs specific SSID scan otherwise wildcard scan is chosen.
When wpa_supplicant provides valid SSID list followed by
zero-length SSID for wildcard scan, only specific SSID scan is
performed by driver. Actually driver is expected to do both type
of scanning in this case. The patch fixes this issue.
Also, use SSID list pointer provided by stack directly, instead
of copying SSID's to local structure.

1. Driver and firmware do not support 22Mbps and 72Mbps bitrates.
Remove them from the rate table advertised to cfg80211.
2. First 4 rates from mwifiex_rates table are not valid for
5GHz/A band. Set correct bitrate array's index and no of rates for
ieee80211_supported_band for 5GHz band.

There is no 2.4 GHz or 5GHz antenna gain stored in sprom. The sprom
just stores the gain values for antenna 1 and 2 or 1 to 4 for more
recent sprom versions. On old devices antenna 2 was used for 5 GHz wifi.

Since AR9003 uses a global tx status queue, processing tx status outside of

The approach of this change is flawed, as it triggers tx status processing
from more callsites, yet the chips only have one global tx status queue.

When authentication type is configured to NL80211_AUTHTYPE_AUTOMATIC,
driver tries to connect using open mode. The association is failed
if AP is configured in shared mode.
This patch adds code to try association using shared mode as well if
open mode association fails.
Now since we returned exact error code in association response handler
(instead of -1), corresponding changes are done in
mwifiex_process_cmdresp().

We didn't update the beacon interval on association
(or on a change notification when working as sta),
so the default interval (100ms) was always used.
Update the beacon interval according to the bss_conf
before starting the sta role (on association).

wl12xx currently looks for AP authorization by registering
a netdev notifier and waiting for the IF_OPER_UP notification,
which is quite cumbersome.
Use the newly introduced sta_state callback (waiting
for assoc -> auth notification) instead, in order to
simplify it.

Implement sta_state callback instead of the
sta_add/remove callbacks.
Update the fw regarding peer state and ht caps
only after the station was authorized. Otherwise,
the fw might try establishing BA session before
the sta is authorized.

device role is used for scanning and sending packets
before connection. however, since we don't need to
send packets before ibss creation, there is no need
to start the device on idle-off.

Factor out the the existing allocation and free operations
so that they can be used individually.
This is to improve code readability, and also to prepare for
possible future changes like better error recovery and more
dynamic configuration (e.g on-the-fly resizing of the rings).
This change represents a straight up relocation of the existing
code into separate routines without changing any of the contained
code itself. Local variables are relocated as necessary.

Since all that include/linux/if_ppp.h does is #include <linux/ppp-ioctl.h>,
this replaces the occurrences of #include <linux/if_ppp.h> with
#include <linux/ppp-ioctl.h>.
It also corrects an error in Documentation/networking/l2tp.txt, where
it referenced include/linux/if_ppp.h as the source of some definitions
that are actually now defined in include/linux/if_pppol2tp.h.

This moves the definitions of the ioctls, constants and structures
relating to the ppp_generic interface to userspace out from if_ppp.h
to a new file, ppp-ioctl.h. The new file has my copyright since I
designed and implemented the ppp_generic interface in the late 1990s.
None of the contents of this file comes from the original if_ppp.h
published by Carnegie Mellon University.
Of the remainder of if_ppp.h, only the PPP_MTU definition was being
used, and this replaces the uses of it with PPP_MRU (which is identical).
Therefore, this replaces the entire file with the single line
#include <linux/ppp-ioctl.h>
which clearly doesn't contain any CMU code. Thus I have removed the
CMU copyright notice with its problematic advertising clause, and in
fact since it's only one trivial line I have not added any other
copyright notice.

This changes the copyright notices on the PPP code that I developed
in the late 1990s from being copyright The Australian National
University to copyright Paul Mackerras. I can do this as I have an
acknowledgement in writing from the Head of the Computer Science
Department at ANU (where I worked then) that ANU does not claim any
intellectual property in this code.
While I'm at it, change the copyright notice from BSD-style to
GNU GPL like the rest of the kernel.

GRC reset causes the read DMA engine to go into a mode that breaks up
requests into 256 bytes. A PHY reset is required to bring it back to
the normal mode.

Loopback on 9K packet fails because the chip has a DMA limit of 4K. The
loopback test logic uses a single BD for simplicity. Fix it by reducing
the jumbo packet size to the DMA limit.
