b7206cbf02 PCI ASPM: support partial aspm enablement
In the current implementation, ASPM L0s/L1 is disabled for all links
in the hierarchy if one of the link doesn't meet latency requirement.
But we can partially enable ASPM L0s/L1 on sub-tree in the hierarchy.
This patch allows partial L0s/L1 enablement in the hierarchy. And it
also reduce the calculation cost of ASPM configuration very much.

In the previous implementation, all links were enabled with the same
state. With this patch, enabled state for each link is determined
simply as follows (the 'requested' is from policy_to_aspm_state()).

    enabled = requested & (link->aspm_capable & link->aspm_disable)

07d92760d2 PCI ASPM: introduce capable flag
Introduce 'aspm_capable' field to maintain the capable ASPM setting of
the link. By the 'aspm_capable', we don't need to recheck latency
every time ASPM policy is changed.

Each bit in 'aspm_capable' is associated to ASPM state (L0S/L1). The
bit is set if the associated ASPM state is supported by the link and
it satisfies the latency requirement (i.e. exit latency < endpoint
acceptable latency). The 'aspm_capable' is updated when

  - an endpoint device is added (boot time or hot-plug time)
  - an endpoint device is removed (hot-unplug time)
  - PCI power state is changed.

430842e29d PCI ASPM: cleanup clkpm checks
In the current ASPM implementation, callers of pcie_set_clock_pm() check
Clock PM capability of the link or current Clock PM state of the link.
This check should be done in pcie_set_clock_pm() itself.

This patch moves those checks into pcie_set_clock_pm(). It also
introduces pcie_set_clkpm_nocheck() that is equivalent to old
pcie_set_clock_pm(), for the caller who wants to change Clocl PM state
regardless of the Clock PM capability or current Clock PM state. In
addition, this patch changes the function name from
pcie_set_clock_pm() to pcie_set_clkpm() for consistency.

5aa63583cb PCI ASPM: cleanup change input argument of aspm functions
In the current ASPM implementation, there are many functions that
take a pointer to struct pci_dev corresponding to the upstream component
of the link as a parameter. But, since those functions handle PCI
express link state, a pointer to struct pcie_link_state is more
suitable than a pointer to struct pci_dev. Changing a parameter to a
pointer to struct pcie_link_state makes ASPM code much simpler and
easier to read. This patch also contains some minor cleanups. This patch

by hardware. Because the root port could only save one kind of

43c1640884 PCI: Add support for turning PCIe ECRC on or off
Adds support for PCI Express transaction layer end-to-end CRC checking
(ECRC). This patch will enable/disable ECRC checking by setting/clearing
the ECRC Check Enable and/or ECRC Generation Enable bits for devices that
support ECRC.

The ECRC setting is controlled by the "pci=ecrc=<policy>" command-line
option. If this option is not set or is set to 'bios", the enable and
generation bits are left in whatever state that firmware/BIOS set them to.
The "off" setting turns them off, and the "on" option turns them on (if the
device supports it).

Turning ECRC on or off can be a data integrity versus performance
tradeoff. In theory, turning it on will catch more data errors, turning
it off means possibly better performance since CRC does not need to be
calculated by the PCIe hardware and packet sizes are reduced.

b43d451385 PCI/PCIe portdrv: Fix allocation of interrupts
If MSI-X interrupt mode is used by the PCI Express port driver, too
many vectors are allocated and it is not ensured that the right
vectors will be used for the right services. Namely, the PCI Express
specification states that both PCI Express native PME and PCI Express
hotplug will always use the same MSI or MSI-X message for signalling
interrupts, which implies that the same vector will be used by both
of them. Also, the VC service does not use interrupts at all.
Moreover, is not clear which of the vectors allocated by
pci_enable_msix() in the current code will be used for PME and
hotplug and which of them will be used for AER if all of these
services are configured.

For these reasons, rework the allocation of interrupts for PCI
Express ports so that if MSI-X are enabled, the right vectors will be
used for the right purposes.

f118c0c3cf PCI: PCIe portdrv: Do not enable port device before setting up interrupts
The PCI Express port driver calls pci_enable_device() before setting

cb4cb4ac73 PCIe: AER: during disable, check subordinate before walking
Commit 47a8b0cc (Enable PCIe AER only after checking firmware
support) wants to walk the PCI bus in the remove path to disable
AER, and calls pci_walk_bus for downstream bridges.

Unfortunately, in the remove path, we remove devices and bridges
in a depth-first manner, starting with the furthest downstream
bridge and working our way backwards.

The furthest downstream bridges will not have a dev->subordinate,
and we hit a NULL deref in pci_walk_bus.

Check for dev->subordinate first before attempting to walk the
PCI hierarchy below us.

1f9f13c8d5 PCI: Enable PCIe AER only after checking firmware support
The PCIe port driver currently sets the PCIe AER error reporting bits for
any root or switch port without first checking to see if firmware will grant
control. This patch moves setting these bits to the AER service driver
aer_enable_port routine. The bits are then set for the root port and any
downstream switch ports after the check for firmware support (aer_osc_setup)
is made. The patch also unsets the bits in a similar fashion when the AER
service driver is unloaded.

3419c75e15 PCI: properly clean up ASPM link state on device remove
We only want to disable ASPM when the last function is removed from
the parent's device list. We determine this by checking to see if
the parent's device list is completely empty.

Unfortunately, we never hit that code because the parent is considered
an upstream port, and never had an ASPM link_state associated with it.

The early check for !link_state causes us to return early, we never
discover that our device list is empty, and thus we never remove the
downstream ports' link_state nodes.

Instead of checking to see if the parent's device list is empty, we can
check to see if we are the last device on the list, and if so, then we
know that we can clean up properly.

e7ae884866 PCI: PCIe portdrv: Fix suspend and resume of PCI Express port services
There is a problem with the suspend and resume of PCI Express port
service devices that the ->suspend() and ->resume() routines of each
service device are called twice in each suspend-resume cycle, which
is obviously wrong.

The scenario is that first, the PCI Express port driver calls
suspend and resume routines of each port service driver from its
pcie_portdrv_suspend() and pcie_portdrv_resume() callbacks,
respectively (which is correct), and second, the pcie_port_bus_type
driver calls them from its ->suspend() and ->resume() callbacks
(which is not correct, because it doesn't happen at the right time).

The solution is to remove the ->suspend() and ->resume() callbacks
from pcie_port_bus_type and the associated functions.

1a9271331a PCI: struct device - replace bus_id with dev_name(), dev_set_name()
This patch is part of a larger patch series which will remove
the "char bus_id[20]" name string from struct device. The device
name is managed in the kobject anyway, and without any size
limitation, and just needlessly copied into "struct device".

To set and read the device name dev_name(dev) and dev_set_name(dev)
must be used. If your code uses static kobjects, which it shouldn't
do, "const char *init_name" can be used to statically provide the
name the registered device should have. At registration time, the
init_name field is cleared, to enforce the use of dev_name(dev) to
access the device name at a later time.

We need to get rid of all occurrences of bus_id in the entire tree
to be able to enable the new interface. Please apply this patch,

7d715a6c1a PCI: add PCI Express ASPM support
PCI Express ASPM defines a protocol for PCI Express components in the D0
state to reduce Link power by placing their Links into a low power state
and instructing the other end of the Link to do likewise. This
capability allows hardware-autonomous, dynamic Link power reduction
beyond what is achievable by software-only controlled power management.
However, The device should be configured by software appropriately.
Enabling ASPM will save power, but will introduce device latency.

This patch adds ASPM support in Linux. It introduces a global policy for
ASPM, a sysfs file /sys/module/pcie_aspm/parameters/policy can control
it. The interface can be used as a boot option too. Currently we have
below setting:
        -default, BIOS default setting
-powersave, highest power saving mode, enable all available ASPM
state and clock power management
-performance, highest performance, disable ASPM and clock power
management
By default, the 'default' policy is used currently.

In my test, power difference between powersave mode and performance mode
is about 1.3w in a system with 3 PCIE links.

Note: some devices might not work well with aspm, either because chipset
issue or device issue. The patch provide API (pci_disable_link_state),
driver can disable ASPM for specific device.

cc3a1378b4 Revert "PCI: PCIE ASPM support"
This reverts commit 6c723d5bd8.

It caused build errors on non-x86 platforms, config file confusion, and
even some boot errors on some x86-64 boxes. All around, not quite ready

6c723d5bd8 PCI: PCIE ASPM support
PCI Express ASPM defines a protocol for PCI Express components in the D0
state to reduce Link power by placing their Links into a low power state
and instructing the other end of the Link to do likewise. This
capability allows hardware-autonomous, dynamic Link power reduction
beyond what is achievable by software-only controlled power management.
However, The device should be configured by software appropriately.
Enabling ASPM will save power, but will introduce device latency.

This patch adds ASPM support in Linux. It introduces a global policy for
ASPM, a sysfs file /sys/module/pcie_aspm/parameters/policy can control
it. The interface can be used as a boot option too. Currently we have
below setting:
        -default, BIOS default setting
-powersave, highest power saving mode, enable all available ASPM
state
and clock power management
-performance, highest performance, disable ASPM and clock power
management
By default, the 'default' policy is used currently.

In my test, power difference between powersave mode and performance mode
is about 1.3w in a system with 3 PCIE links.

e8edc6e03a Detach sched.h from mm.h
First thing mm.h does is including sched.h solely for can_do_mlock() inline
function which has "current" dereference inside. By dealing with can_do_mlock()
mm.h can be detached from sched.h which is good. See below, why.

This patch
a) removes unconditional inclusion of sched.h from mm.h
b) makes can_do_mlock() normal function in mm/mlock.c
c) exports can_do_mlock() to not break compilation
d) adds sched.h inclusions back to files that were getting it indirectly.
e) adds less bloated headers to some files (asm/signal.h, jiffies.h) that were
   getting them indirectly

Net result is:
a) mm.h users would get less code to open, read, preprocess, parse, ... if
   they don't need sched.h
b) sched.h stops being dependency for significant number of files:
on x86_64 allmodconfig touching sched.h results in recompile of 4083 files,
   after patch it's only 3744 (-8.3%).

65f27f3844 WorkStruct: Pass the work_struct pointer instead of context data
Pass the work_struct pointer to the work function rather than context data.
The work function can use container_of() to work out the data.

For the cases where the container of the work_struct may go away the moment the
pending bit is cleared, it is made possible to defer the release of the
structure by deferring the clearing of the pending bit.

To make this work, an extra flag is introduced into the management side of the
work_struct. This governs auto-release of the structure upon execution.

Ordinarily, the work queue executor would release the work_struct for further
scheduling or deallocation by clearing the pending bit prior to jumping to the
work function. This means that, unless the driver makes some guarantee itself
that the work_struct won't go away, the work function may not access anything
else in the work_struct or its container lest they be deallocated.. This is a
problem if the auxiliary data is taken away (as done by the last patch).

However, if the pending bit is *not* cleared before jumping to the work
function, then the work function *may* access the work_struct and its container
with no problems. But then the work function must itself release the
work_struct by calling work_release().

In most cases, automatic release is fine, so this is the default. Special
initiators exist for the non-auto-release case (ending in _NAR).

7d12e780e0 IRQ: Maintain regs pointer globally rather than passing to IRQ handlers
Maintain a per-CPU global "struct pt_regs *" variable which can be used instead
of passing regs around manually through all ~1800 interrupt handlers in the
Linux kernel.

The regs pointer is used in few places, but it potentially costs both stack
space and code to pass it around. On the FRV arch, removing the regs parameter
from all the genirq function results in a 20% speed up of the IRQ exit path
(ie: from leaving timer_interrupt() to leaving do_IRQ()).

Where appropriate, an arch may override the generic storage facility and do
something different with the variable. On FRV, for instance, the address is
maintained in GR28 at all times inside the kernel as part of general exception
handling.

Having looked over the code, it appears that the parameter may be handed down
through up to twenty or so layers of functions. Consider a USB character
device attached to a USB hub, attached to a USB controller that posts its
interrupts through a cascaded auxiliary interrupt controller. A character
device driver may want to pass regs to the sysrq handler through the input
layer which adds another few layers of parameter passing.

I've build this code with allyesconfig for x86_64 and i386. I've runtested the
main part of the code on FRV and i386, though I can't test most of the drivers.
I've also done partial conversion for powerpc and MIPS - these at least compile
with minimal configurations.

This will affect all archs. Mostly the changes should be relatively easy.
Take do_IRQ(), store the regs pointer at the beginning, saving the old one:

	struct pt_regs *old_regs = set_irq_regs(regs);

And put the old one back at the end:

	set_irq_regs(old_regs);

Don't pass regs through to generic_handle_irq() or __do_IRQ().

In timer_interrupt(), this sort of change will be necessary:

	-	update_process_times(user_mode(regs));
	-	profile_tick(CPU_PROFILING, regs);
	+	update_process_times(user_mode(get_irq_regs()));
	+	profile_tick(CPU_PROFILING);

I'd like to move update_process_times()'s use of get_irq_regs() into itself,
except that i386, alone of the archs, uses something other than user_mode().

Some notes on the interrupt handling in the drivers:

(*) input_dev() is now gone entirely. The regs pointer is no longer stored in
     the input_dev struct.

(*) finish_unlinks() in drivers/usb/host/ohci-q.c needs checking. It does
something different depending on whether it's been supplied with a regs
     pointer or not.

(*) Various IRQ handler function pointers have been moved to type
     irq_handler_t.

6c2b374d74 PCI-Express AER implemetation: AER core and aerdriver
Patch 3 implements the core part of PCI-Express AER and aerdrv
port service driver.

When a root port service device is probed, the aerdrv will call
request_irq to register irq handler for AER error interrupt.

When a device sends an PCI-Express error message to the root port,
the root port will trigger an interrupt, by either MSI or IO-APIC,
then kernel would run the irq handler. The handler collects root
error status register and schedules a work. The work will call
the core part to process the error based on its type
(Correctable/non-fatal/fatal).

As for Correctable errors, the patch chooses to just clear the correctable
error status register of the device.

As for the non-fatal error, the patch follows generic PCI error handler
rules to call the error callback functions of the endpoint's driver. If
the device is a bridge, the patch chooses to broadcast the error to
downstream devices.

As for the fatal error, the patch resets the pci-express link and
follows generic PCI error handler rules to call the error callback
functions of the endpoint's driver. If the device is a bridge, the patch
chooses to broadcast the error to downstream devices.

4e57b68178 [PATCH] fix missing includes
I recently picked up my older work to remove unnecessary #includes of
sched.h, starting from a patch by Dave Jones to not include sched.h
from module.h. This reduces the number of indirect includes of sched.h
by ~300. Another ~400 pointless direct includes can be removed after
this disentangling (patch to follow later).
However, quite a few indirect includes need to be fixed up for this.

In order to feed the patches through -mm with as little disturbance as
possible, I've split out the fixes I accumulated up to now (complete for
i386 and x86_64, more archs to follow later) and post them before the real
patch. This way this large part of the patch is kept simple with only
adding #includes, and all hunks are independent of each other. So if any
hunk rejects or gets in the way of other patches, just drop it. My scripts
will pick it up again in the next round.

9480e307cd [PATCH] DRIVER MODEL: Get rid of the obsolete tri-level suspend/resume callbacks
In PM v1, all devices were called at SUSPEND_DISABLE level. Then
all devices were called at SUSPEND_SAVE_STATE level, and finally
SUSPEND_POWER_DOWN level. However, with PM v2, to maintain
compatibility for platform devices, I arranged for the PM v2
suspend/resume callbacks to call the old PM v1 suspend/resume
callbacks three times with each level in order so that existing
drivers continued to work.

Since this is obsolete infrastructure which is no longer necessary,
we can remove it. Here's an (untested) patch to do exactly that.

Thanks for making the changes. However, changes in functions:
void pcie_port_device_remove(struct pci_dev *dev) and
static int remove_iter(struct device *dev, void *data)
are not correct. Please use the patch, which is based on kernel
2.6.12-rc1, below for a fix for these.

Initial git repository build. I'm not bothering with the full history,
even though we have it. We can create a separate "historical" git
archive of that later if we want to, and in the meantime it's about
3.2GB when imported into git - space that would just make the early
git days unnecessarily complicated, when we don't have a lot of good
infrastructure for it.

Let it rip!
