5950e5d574 freezer: Have {,un}lock_system_sleep() save/restore flags
Rafael explained that the reason for having both PF_NOFREEZE and
PF_FREEZER_SKIP is that {,un}lock_system_sleep() is callable from
kthread context that has previously called set_freezable().

In preparation of merging the flags, have {,un}lock_system_slee() save
and restore current->flags.

8386c414e2 PM: hibernate: defer device probing when resuming from hibernation
syzbot is reporting hung task at misc_open() [1], for there is a race
window of AB-BA deadlock which involves probe_count variable. Currently
wait_for_device_probe() from snapshot_open() from misc_open() can sleep
forever with misc_mtx held if probe_count cannot become 0.

When a device is probed by hub_event() work function, probe_count is
incremented before the probe function starts, and probe_count is
decremented after the probe function completed.

There are three cases that can prevent probe_count from dropping to 0.

  (a) A device being probed stopped responding (i.e. broken/malicious
      hardware).

  (b) A process emulating a USB device using /dev/raw-gadget interface
      stopped responding for some reason.

  (c) New device probe requests keeps coming in before existing device
      probe requests complete.

The phenomenon syzbot is reporting is (b). A process which is holding
system_transition_mutex and misc_mtx is waiting for probe_count to become
0 inside wait_for_device_probe(), but the probe function which is called
 from hub_event() work function is waiting for the processes which are
blocked at mutex_lock(&misc_mtx) to respond via /dev/raw-gadget interface.

This patch mitigates (b) by deferring wait_for_device_probe() from
snapshot_open() to snapshot_write() and snapshot_ioctl(). Please note that
the possibility of (b) remains as long as any thread which is emulating a
USB device via /dev/raw-gadget interface can be blocked by uninterruptible
blocking operations (e.g. mutex_lock()).

Please also note that (a) and (c) are not addressed. Regarding (c), we
should change the code to wait for only one device which contains the
image for resuming from hibernation. I don't know how to address (a), for
use of timeout for wait_for_device_probe() might result in loss of user
data in the image. Maybe we should require the userland to wait for the
image device before opening /dev/snapshot interface.

88a5045f17 PM: hibernate: Fix snapshot partial write lengths
snapshot_write() is inappropriately limiting the amount of data that can
be written in cases where a partial page has already been written. For
example, one would expect to be able to write 1 byte, then 4095 bytes to
the snapshot device, and have both of those complete fully (since now
we're aligned to a page again). But what ends up happening is we write 1
byte, then 4094/4095 bytes complete successfully.

The reason is that simple_write_to_buffer()'s second argument is the
total size of the buffer, not the size of the buffer minus the offset.
Since simple_write_to_buffer() accounts for the offset in its
implementation, snapshot_write() can just pass the full page size
directly down.

21bd900572 mm: split swap_type_of
swap_type_of is used for two entirely different purposes:

 (1) check what swap type a given device/offset corresponds to
 (2) find the first available swap device that can be written to

Mixing both in a single function creates an unreadable mess.  Create two
separate functions instead, and switch both to pass a dev_t instead of
a struct block_device to further simplify the code.

70d9329857 notifier: Fix broken error handling pattern
The current notifiers have the following error handling pattern all
over the place:

	int err, nr;

	err = __foo_notifier_call_chain(&chain, val_up, v, -1, &nr);
	if (err & NOTIFIER_STOP_MASK)
		__foo_notifier_call_chain(&chain, val_down, v, nr-1, NULL)

And aside from the endless repetition thereof, it is broken. Consider
blocking notifiers; both calls take and drop the rwsem, this means
that the notifier list can change in between the two calls, making @nr
meaningless.

Fix this by replacing all the __foo_notifier_call_chain() functions
with foo_notifier_call_chain_robust() that embeds the above pattern,
but ensures it is inside a single lock region.

Note: I switched atomic_notifier_call_chain_robust() to use
      the spinlock, since RCU cannot provide the guarantee
      required for the recovery.

Note: software_resume() error handling was broken afaict.

ad1e4f74c0 PM: hibernate: Restrict writes to the resume device
Hibernation via snapshot device requires write permission to the swap
block device, the one that more often (but not necessarily) is used to
store the hibernation image.

With this patch, such permissions are granted iff:

 1) snapshot device config option is enabled
 2) swap partition is used as resume device

In other circumstances the swap device is not writable from userspace.

In order to achieve this, every write attempt to a swap device is
checked against the device configured as part of the uswsusp API [0]
using a pointer to the inode struct in memory. If the swap device being
written was not configured for resuming, the write request is denied.

NOTE: this implementation works only for swap block devices, where the
inode configured by swapon (which sets S_SWAPFILE) is the same used
by SNAPSHOT_SET_SWAP_AREA.

In case of swap file, SNAPSHOT_SET_SWAP_AREA indeed receives the inode
of the block device containing the filesystem where the swap file is
located (+ offset in it) which is never passed to swapon and then has
not set S_SWAPFILE.

As result, the swap file itself (as a file) has never an option to be
written from userspace. Instead it remains writable if accessed directly
from the containing block device, which is always writeable from root.

where it's also used for regulating the access to the snapshot device.

LCD_MINOR instead and moved into miscdevice.h

MISCDEV_MINOR is renamed to PXA3XX_GCU_MINOR and moved into

fba616a49f PM / hibernate: Remove unnecessary compat ioctl overrides
Since the SNAPSHOT_GET_IMAGE_SIZE, SNAPSHOT_AVAIL_SWAP_SIZE, and
SNAPSHOT_ALLOC_SWAP_PAGE ioctls produce an loff_t result, and loff_t is
always 64-bit even in the compat case, there's no reason to have the
special compat handling for these ioctls.  Just remove this unneeded
code so that these ioctls call into snapshot_ioctl() directly, doing
just the compat_ptr() conversion on the argument.

(This unnecessary code was also causing a KMSAN false positive.)

55f2503c3b PM / reboot: Eliminate race between reboot and suspend
At present, "systemctl suspend" and "shutdown" can run in parrallel. A
system can suspend after devices_shutdown(), and resume. Then the shutdown
task goes on to power off. This causes many devices are not really shut
off. Hence replacing reboot_mutex with system_transition_mutex (renamed
from pm_mutex) to achieve the exclusion. The renaming of pm_mutex as
system_transition_mutex can be better to reflect the purpose of the mutex.

70f68ee81e fs: add ksys_sync() helper; remove in-kernel calls to sys_sync()
Using this helper allows us to avoid the in-kernel calls to the
sys_sync() syscall. The ksys_ prefix denotes that this function
is meant as a drop-in replacement for the syscall. In particular, it
uses the same calling convention as sys_sync().

This patch is part of a series which removes in-kernel calls to syscalls.

6a0c7cd330 PM / Hibernate: Do not crash kernel in free_basic_memory_bitmaps()
I have received a report about the BUG_ON() in free_basic_memory_bitmaps()
triggering mysteriously during an aborted s2disk hibernation attempt.
The only way I can explain that is that /dev/snapshot was first
opened for writing (resume mode), then closed and then opened again
for reading and closed again without freezing tasks.  In that case
the first invocation of snapshot_open() would set the free_bitmaps
flag in snapshot_state, which is a static variable.  That flag
wouldn't be cleared later and the second invocation of snapshot_open()
would just leave it like that, so the subsequent snapshot_release()
would see data->frozen set and free_basic_memory_bitmaps() would be
called unnecessarily.

To prevent that from happening clear data->free_bitmaps in
snapshot_open() when the file is being opened for reading (hibernate
mode).

In addition to that, replace the BUG_ON() in free_basic_memory_bitmaps()
with a WARN_ON() as the kernel can continue just fine if the condition
checked by that macro occurs.

aab1728915 PM / hibernate: Fix user space driven resume regression
Recent commit 8fd37a4 (PM / hibernate: Create memory bitmaps after
freezing user space) broke the resume part of the user space driven
hibernation (s2disk), because I forgot that the resume utility
loaded the image into memory without freezing user space (it still
freezes tasks after loading the image).  This means that during user
space driven resume we need to create the memory bitmaps at the
"device open" time rather than at the "freeze tasks" time, so make
that happen (that's a special case anyway, so it needs to be treated
in a special way).

942f40155a PM / hibernate / memory hotplug: Rework mutual exclusion
Since all of the memory hotplug operations have to be carried out
under device_hotplug_lock, they won't need to acquire pm_mutex if
device_hotplug_lock is held around hibernation.

For this reason, make the hibernation code acquire
device_hotplug_lock after freezing user space processes and
release it before thawing them.  At the same tim drop the
lock_system_sleep() and unlock_system_sleep() calls from
lock_memory_hotplug() and unlock_memory_hotplug(), respectively.

8fd37a4c98 PM / hibernate: Create memory bitmaps after freezing user space
The hibernation core uses special memory bitmaps during image
creation and restoration and traditionally those bitmaps are
allocated before freezing tasks, because in the past GFP_KERNEL
allocations might not work after all tasks had been frozen.

However, this is an anachronism, because hibernation_snapshot()
now calls hibernate_preallocate_memory() which allocates memory
for the image upfront anyway, so the memory bitmaps may be
allocated after freezing user space safely.

For this reason, move all of the create_basic_memory_bitmaps()
calls after freeze_processes() and all of the corresponding
free_basic_memory_bitmaps() calls before thaw_processes().

This will allow us to hold device_hotplug_lock around hibernation
without the need to worry about freezing issues with user space
processes attempting to acquire it via sysfs attributes after the
creation of memory bitmaps and before the freezing of tasks.

eea03c20ae Make wait_for_device_probe() also do scsi_complete_async_scans()
Commit a7a20d1039 ("sd: limit the scope of the async probe domain")
make the SCSI device probing run device discovery in it's own async
domain.

However, as a result, the partition detection was no longer synchronized
by async_synchronize_full() (which, despite the name, only synchronizes
the global async space, not all of them).  Which in turn meant that
"wait_for_device_probe()" would not wait for the SCSI partitions to be
parsed.

And "wait_for_device_probe()" was what the boot time init code relied on
for mounting the root filesystem.

Now, most people never noticed this, because not only is it
timing-dependent, but modern distributions all use initrd.  So the root
filesystem isn't actually on a disk at all.  And then before they
actually mount the final disk filesystem, they will have loaded the
scsi-wait-scan module, which not only does the expected
wait_for_device_probe(), but also does scsi_complete_async_scans().

[ Side note: scsi_complete_async_scans() had also been partially broken,
  but that was fixed in commit 43a8d39d01 ("fix async probe
  regression"), so that same commit a7a20d1039 had actually broken
  setups even if you used scsi-wait-scan explicitly ]

Solve this problem by just moving the scsi_complete_async_scans() call
into wait_for_device_probe().  Everybody who wants to wait for device
probing to finish really wants the SCSI probing to complete, so there's
no reason not to do this.

So now "wait_for_device_probe()" really does what the name implies, and
properly waits for device probing to finish.  This also removes the now
unnecessary extra calls to scsi_complete_async_scans().

1e73203cd1 PM / Sleep: Move disabling of usermode helpers to the freezer
The core suspend/hibernation code calls usermodehelper_disable() to
avoid race conditions between the freezer and the starting of
usermode helpers and each code path has to do that on its own.
However, it is always called right before freeze_processes()
and usermodehelper_enable() is always called right after
thaw_processes().  For this reason, to avoid code duplication and
to make the connection between usermodehelper_disable() and the
freezer more visible, make freeze_processes() call it and remove the
direct usermodehelper_disable() and usermodehelper_enable() calls
from all suspend/hibernation code paths.

we should have thawed only the kernel threads at that point. Fix both these
issues.

Commit 2aede851dd

  PM / Hibernate: Freeze kernel threads after preallocating memory

introduced a mechanism by which kernel threads were frozen after
the preallocation of hibernate image memory to avoid problems with
frozen kernel threads not responding to memory freeing requests.
However, it overlooked the s2disk code path in which the
SNAPSHOT_CREATE_IMAGE ioctl was run directly after SNAPSHOT_FREE,
which caused freeze_workqueues_begin() to BUG(), because it saw
that worqueues had been already frozen.

Although in principle this issue might be addressed by removing
the relevant BUG_ON() from freeze_workqueues_begin(), that would
reintroduce the very problem that commit 2aede851dd
attempted to avoid into that particular code path.  For this reason,
to fix the issue at hand, introduce thaw_kernel_threads() and make
the SNAPSHOT_FREE ioctl execute it.

Commit 2aede851dd (PM / Hibernate: Freeze
kernel threads after preallocating memory) moved the freezing of kernel
threads to hibernation_snapshot() function.

So now, if the call to hibernation_snapshot() returns early due to a
successful hibernation test, the caller has to thaw processes to ensure
that the system gets back to its original state.

But in SNAPSHOT_CREATE_IMAGE hibernation ioctl, the caller does not thaw
processes in case hibernation_snapshot() returned due to a successful
freezer test. Fix this issue. But note we still send the value of 'in_suspend'
(which is now 0) to userspace, because we are not in an error path per-se,
and moreover, the value of in_suspend correctly depicts the situation here.

03afed8bc2 freezer: clean up freeze_processes() failure path
freeze_processes() failure path is rather messy.  Freezing is canceled
for workqueues and tasks which aren't frozen yet but frozen tasks are
left alone and should be thawed by the caller and of course some
callers (xen and kexec) didn't do it.

This patch updates __thaw_task() to handle cancelation correctly and
makes freeze_processes() and freeze_kernel_threads() call
thaw_processes() on failure instead so that the system is fully thawed
on failure.  Unnecessary [suspend_]thaw_processes() calls are removed
from kernel/power/hibernate.c, suspend.c and user.c.

While at it, restructure error checking if clause in suspend_prepare()
to be less weird.

     suspend_prepare() and error in commit message.  Updated.

8440f4b194 PM: Free memory bitmaps if opening /dev/snapshot fails
When opening /dev/snapshot device, snapshot_open() creates memory
bitmaps which are freed in snapshot_release(). But if any of the
callbacks called by pm_notifier_call_chain() returns NOTIFY_BAD, open()
fails, snapshot_release() is never called and bitmaps are not freed.
Next attempt to open /dev/snapshot then triggers BUG_ON() check in
create_basic_memory_bitmaps(). This happens e.g. when vmwatchdog module
is active on s390x.

The SNAPSHOT_S2RAM ioctl used for implementing the feature allowing
one to suspend to RAM after creating a hibernation image is currently
broken, because it doesn't clear the "ready" flag in the struct
snapshot_data object handled by it.  As a result, the
SNAPSHOT_UNFREEZE doesn't work correctly after SNAPSHOT_S2RAM has
returned and the user space hibernate task cannot thaw the other
processes as appropriate.  Make SNAPSHOT_S2RAM clear data->ready
to fix this problem.

c9e664f1fd PM / Hibernate: Fix memory corruption related to swap
There is a problem that swap pages allocated before the creation of
a hibernation image can be released and used for storing the contents
of different memory pages while the image is being saved.  Since the
kernel stored in the image doesn't know of that, it causes memory
corruption to occur after resume from hibernation, especially on
systems with relatively small RAM that need to swap often.

This issue can be addressed by keeping the GFP_IOFS bits clear
in gfp_allowed_mask during the entire hibernation, including the
saving of the image, until the system is finally turned off or
the hibernation is aborted.  Unfortunately, for this purpose
it's necessary to rework the way in which the hibernate and
suspend code manipulates gfp_allowed_mask.

This change is based on an earlier patch from Hugh Dickins.

d3c1b24c50 PM / Hibernate: Snapshot cleanup
Remove support of reads with offset. This means snapshot_read/write_next
now does not accept count parameter. It allows to clean up the functions
and snapshot handle which no longer needs to care about offsets.

/dev/snapshot handler is converted to simple_{read_from,write_to}_buffer
which take care of offsets.

d88d4050dc PM / Hibernate: user.c, fix SNAPSHOT_SET_SWAP_AREA handling
When CONFIG_DEBUG_BLOCK_EXT_DEVT is set we decode the device
improperly by old_decode_dev and it results in an error while
hibernating with s2disk.

All users already pass the new device number, so switch to
new_decode_dev().
