return standard error values. So do the same for simple_config too.

Set tty_ldisc_ops::owner to THIS_MODULE. This has no effect currently as
n_tty cannot be built as a module. If someone ever tries to modularize
tty, we wouldn't manage module's reference count as in other ldiscs. So

First, it is never checked. Second, use of it as a debugging aid is
at least questionable. With the current tools, I don't think anyone used
this kind of thing for debugging purposes for years.
On the top of that, e.g. serdev does not set this field of tty_ldisc_ops
at all.
So get rid of this legacy.

While the driver is still marked as maintained in MAINTAINERS, Comtrol
does not really care about this ancient driver. They are still
manufacturing serial devices, but those are controlled only by
out-of-tree drivers.
Comtrol didn't answer my pings, so this driver is apparently
unmaintained. Aside from that, the driver was untouched for years, only
whole-tree changes happened during the past years. The driver needs much
more care, so drop it for now. If someone steps up to reintroduce it,
they need to clean it up first.

No need to keep around the dentry pointer for the debugfs file if all it
is used for is to remove it when we are wanting to clean up, as the
pointer can be looked up directly from debugfs instead.
This also removes pointless #ifdef CONFIG_DEBUG_FS brackets as the
compiler is smart enough to handle this properly if debugfs is disabled
without us having to worry about it.

This reverts commit 33d4ae9885.
Pierre-Louis writes:
Our SOF/audio CI shows an across-the-board regression when we try v5.12-rc1,
specifically on pause/resume tests with an interactive terminal running 'aplay
-i' commands managed by expect to simulate the user pressing the space bar to
pause/unpause. It turns out the processes are not longer killed and the audio
devices remain busy (see publicly available test results listed below).
git bisect points to commit 33d4ae9885 ("drivers:tty:pty: Fix a race
causing data loss on close"). Reverting the patch fixes the issue on all test
devices.
Further analysis with Corey Minyard points to a problem where a slave tty will
not get a SIGHUP when the master is closed.
So revert this for now:

This reverts commit fce3c5c1a2.
FIFO is triggered 4 intervals after receiving a byte, it's good
when we don't care about the time of reception, but are only
interested in the presence of any activity on the line.
Unfortunately, this method is not suitable for all tasks,
for example, the RS-485 protocol will not work properly,
since the state machine must track the request-response time
and after the timeout expires, a decision is made that the device
on the line is not responding.

The driver core ignores the return value of struct bus_type::remove()
because there is only little that can be done. To simplify the quest to
make this function return void, let struct vio_driver::remove() return
void, too. All users already unconditionally return 0, this commit makes
it obvious that returning an error code is a bad idea.
Note there are two nominally different implementations for a vio bus:
one in arch/sparc/kernel/vio.c and the other in
arch/powerpc/platforms/pseries/vio.c. This patch only adapts the powerpc
one.
Before this patch for a device that was bound to a driver without a
remove callback vio_cmo_bus_remove(viodev) wasn't called. As the device
core still considers the device unbound after vio_bus_remove() returns
calling this unconditionally is the consistent behaviour which is
implemented here.

Here is the large set of char/misc/whatever driver subsystem updates for
5.12-rc1. Over time it seems like this tree is collecting more and more
tiny driver subsystems in one place, making it easier for those
maintainers, which is why this is getting larger.
Included in here are:
- coresight driver updates
- habannalabs driver updates
- virtual acrn driver addition (proper acks from the x86
maintainers)
- broadcom misc driver addition
- speakup driver updates
- soundwire driver updates
- fpga driver updates
- amba driver updates
- mei driver updates
- vfio driver updates
- greybus driver updates
- nvmeem driver updates
- phy driver updates
- mhi driver updates
- interconnect driver udpates
- fsl-mc bus driver updates
- random driver fix
- some small misc driver updates (rtsx, pvpanic, etc.)
All of these have been in linux-next for a while, with the only reported
issue being a merge conflict in include/linux/mod_devicetable.h that you
will hit in your tree due to the dfl_device_id addition from the fpga
subsystem in here. The resolution should be simple.

Al root-caused a new warning from syzbot to the ttyprintk tty driver
returning a write count larger than the data the tty layer actually gave
it. Which confused the tty write code mightily, and with the new

much further, it just didn't get caught by anything before.

The usage of in_interrupt() in drivers is phased out for various
reasons.
In both exported functions where BUG_ON(in_interrupt()) is invoked,
there is a mutex_lock() afterwards. mutex_lock() contains a
might_sleep() which will already trigger a stack trace if the target
functions is called from atomic context.
Remove the BUG_ON() and add a "Context: " in the kernel-doc instead.

reset_vc() uses a "!in_interrupt()" conditional before resetting the

all calls are invoked from a workqueue process context, with the
blocking console lock always acquired.

All amba drivers return 0 in their remove callback. Together with the
driver core ignoring the return value anyhow, it doesn't make sense to
return a value here.
Change the remove prototype to return void, which makes it explicit that
returning an error value doesn't work as expected. This simplifies changing
the core remove callback to return void, too.

It turns out that the vfs_iocb_iter_{read,write}() functions are
entirely broken, and don't actually use the passed-in file pointer for
IO - only for the preparatory work (permission checking and for the
write_iter function lookup).
That worked fine for overlayfs, which always builds the new iocb with
the same file pointer that it passes in, but in the general case it ends
up doing nonsensical things (and could cause an iterator call that
doesn't even match the passed-in file pointer).
This subtly broke the tty conversion to write_iter in commit
9bb48c82ac ("tty: implement write_iter"), because the console
redirection didn't actually end up redirecting anything, since the
passed-in file pointer was basically ignored, and the actual write was
done with the original non-redirected console tty after all.
The main visible effect of this is that the console messages were no
longer logged to /var/log/boot.log during graphical boot.
Fix the issue by simply not using the vfs write "helper" function at
all, and just redirecting the write entirely internally to the tty
layer. Do the target writability permission checks when actually
registering the target tty with TIOCCONS instead of at write time.

pointed to by the of match table. Use of_device_get_match_data() instead

When I converted the tty_ldisc_ops 'read()' function to take a kernel
pointer, I was a bit too aggressive about the ldisc returning EOVERFLOW.
Yes, we want to have EOVERFLOW override any partially read data (because
the whole point is that the buffer was too small for the whole packet,
and we don't want to see partial packets), but it shouldn't override a
previous EFAULT.
And in fact, it really is just EOVERFLOW that is special and should
throw away any partially read data, not "any error". Admittedly
EOVERFLOW is currently the only one that can happen for a continuation
read - and if the first read iteration returns an error we won't have this issue.
So this is more of a technicality, but let's just make the intent very
explicit, and re-organize the error handling a bit so that this is all
clearer.

Fixes both the "splice/sendfile to a tty" and "splice/sendfile from a
tty" regression from 5.10.
* 'tty-splice' of git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/torvalds/linux:
tty: teach the n_tty ICANON case about the new "cookie continuations" too
tty: teach n_tty line discipline about the new "cookie continuations"
tty: clean up legacy leftovers from n_tty line discipline
tty: implement read_iter
tty: convert tty_ldisc_ops 'read()' function to take a kernel pointer
tty: implement write_iter
We want the single "splice/sendfile to a tty" regression fix into
tty-linus so it can get into 5.11-final, while the larger patch series
fixing "splice/sendfile from a tty" should wait for 5.12-rc1 so that we
get more testing.
Signed-off-by: Greg Kroah-Hartman <gregkh@linuxfoundation.org>
The ICANON case is a bit messy, since it has to look for the line
ending, and has special code to then suppress line ending characters if
they match the __DISABLED_CHAR. So it actually looks up the line ending
even past the point where it knows it won't copy it to the result
buffer.
That said, apart from all those odd legacy N_TTY ICANON cases, the
actual "should we continue copying" logic isn't really all that
complicated or different from the non-canon case. In fact, the lack of
"wait for at least N characters" arguably makes the repeat case slightly
simpler. It really just boils down to "there's more of the line to be
copied".
So add the necessarily trivial logic, and now the N_TTY case will give
long result lines even when in canon mode.

With the conversion to do the tty ldisc read operations in small chunks,
the n_tty line discipline became noticeably slower for throughput
oriented loads, because rather than read things in up to 2kB chunks, it
would return at most 64 bytes per read() system call.
The cost is mainly all in the "do system calls over and over", not
really in the new "copy to an extra kernel buffer".
This can be fixed by teaching the n_tty line discipline about the
"cookie continuation" model, which the chunking code supports because
things like hdlc need to be able to handle packets up to 64kB in size.
Doing that doesn't just get us back to the old performace, but to much
better performance: my stupid "copy 10MB of data over a pty" test
program is now almost twice as fast as it used to be (going down from
0.1s to 0.054s).
This is entirely because it now creates maximal chunks (which happens to
be "one byte less than one page" due to how we do the circular tty
buffers).
NOTE! This case only handles the simpler non-icanon case, which is the
one where people may care about throughput. I'm going to do the icanon
case later too, because while performance isn't a major issue for that,
there may be programs that think they'll always get a full line and
don't like the 64-byte chunking for that reason.
Such programs are arguably buggy (signals etc can cause random partial
results from tty reads anyway), and good programs will handle such
partial reads, but expecting everybody to write "good programs" has
never been a winning policy for the kernel..

Back when the line disciplines did their own direct user accesses, they
had to deal with the data copy possibly failing in the middle.
Now that the user copy is done by the tty_io.c code, that failure case
no longer exists.

This makes the tty layer use the .write_iter() function instead of the
traditional .write() functionality.

The tty line discipline .read() function was passed the final user
pointer destination as an argument, which doesn't match the 'write()'
function, and makes it very inconvenient to do a splice method for
ttys.
This is a conversion to use a kernel buffer instead.
NOTE! It does this by passing the tty line discipline ->read() function
an additional "cookie" to fill in, and an offset into the cookie data.
The line discipline can fill in the cookie data with its own private
information, and then the reader will repeat the read until either the
cookie is cleared or it runs out of data.
The only real user of this is N_HDLC, which can use this to handle big
packets, even if the kernel buffer is smaller than the whole packet.

vcc_get() returns the port that has provided port->index. As the port that
is about to be removed isn't removed yet this trivially will find this
port. So simplify the call to not assign an identical value to the port
pointer and drop the warning that is never hit.

This reverts commit 757055ae8d.
The commit caused that ttynull was used as the default console
on several systems[1][2][3]. As a result, the console was
blank even when a better alternative existed.
It happened when there was no console configured
on the command line and ttynull_init() was the first initcall
calling register_console().
Or it happened when /dev/ did not exist when console_on_rootfs()
was called. It was not able to open /dev/console even though
a console driver was registered. It tried to add ttynull console
but it obviously did not help. But ttynull became the preferred
console and was used by /dev/console when it was available later.
The commit tried to fix a historical problem that have been there
for ages. The primary motivation was the commit 3cffa06aee
("printk/console: Allow to disable console output by using console=""
or console=null"). It provided a clean solution for a workaround
that was widely used and worked only by chance.
This revert causes that the console="" or console=null command line
options will again work only by chance. These options will cause that
a particular console will be preferred and the default (tty) ones
will not get enabled. There will be no console registered at
all. As a result there won't be stdin, stdout, and stderr for
the init process. But it worked exactly this way even before.
The proper solution has to fulfill many conditions:
+ Register ttynull only when explicitly required or as
the ultimate fallback.
+ ttynull should get associated with /dev/console but it must
not become preferred console when used as a fallback.
Especially, it must still be possible to replace it
by a better console later.
Such a change requires clean up of the register_console() code.
Otherwise, it would be even harder to follow. Especially, the use
of has_preferred_console and CON_CONSDEV flag is tricky. The clean
up is risky. The ordering of consoles is not well defined. And
any changes tend to break existing user settings.
Do the revert at the least risky solution for now.

n_tty_flush_buffer can happen in parallel with n_tty_close that the
tty->disc_data will be set to NULL. n_tty_flush_buffer accesses
tty->disc_data, so we must prevent n_tty_close clear tty->disc_data
while n_tty_flush_buffer has a non-NULL view of tty->disc_data.
So we need to make sure that accesses to disc_data are atomic using
tty->termios_rwsem.
There is an example I meet:
When n_tty_flush_buffer accesses tty struct, the disc_data is right.
However, then reset_buffer_flags accesses tty->disc_data, disc_data
become NULL, So kernel crash when accesses tty->disc_data->real_tail.
I guess there could be another thread change tty->disc_data to NULL,
and during N_TTY line discipline, n_tty_close will set tty->disc_data
to be NULL. So use tty->termios_rwsem to protect disc_data between close
and flush_buffer.

Remove the tty_vhangup() from the pty code and just release the
redirect. The tty_vhangup() results in data loss and data out of order
issues.
If you write to a pty master an immediately close the pty master, the
receiver might get a chunk of data dropped, but then receive some later
data. That's obviously something rather unexpected for a user. It
certainly confused my test program.
It turns out that tty_vhangup() on the slave pty gets called from
pty_close(), and that causes the data on the slave side to be flushed,
but due to races more data can be copied into the slave side's buffer
after that. Consider the following sequence:
thread1 thread2 thread3
------- ------- -------
| |-write data into buffer,
| | n_tty buffer is filled
| | along with other buffers
| |-pty_close(master)
| |--tty_vhangup(slave)
| |---tty_ldisc_hangup()
| |----n_tty_flush_buffer()
| |-----reset_buffer_flags()
|-n_tty_read() |
|--up_read(&tty->termios_rwsem);
| |------down_read(&tty->termios_rwsem)
| |------clear n_tty buffer contents
| |------up_read(&tty->termios_rwsem)
|--tty_buffer_flush_work() |
|--schedules work calling |
| flush_to_ldisc() |
| |-flush_to_ldisc()
| |--receive_buf()
| |---tty_port_default_receive_buf()
| |----tty_ldisc_receive_buf()
| |-----n_tty_receive_buf2()
| |------n_tty_receive_buf_common()
| |-------down_read(&tty->termios_rwsem)
| |-------__receive_buf()
| | copies data into n_tty buffer
| |-------up_read(&tty->termios_rwsem)
|--down_read(&tty->termios_rwsem)
|--copy buffer data to user
>From this sequence, you can see that thread2 writes to the buffer then
only clears the part of the buffer in n_tty. The n_tty receive buffer
code then copies more data into the n_tty buffer.
But part of the vhangup, releasing the redirect, is still required to
avoid issues with consoles running on pty slaves. So do that.
As far as I can tell, that is all that should be required.

Drop support for these ioctls:
* PIO_FONT, PIO_FONTX
* GIO_FONT, GIO_FONTX
* PIO_FONTRESET
As was demonstrated by commit 90bfdeef83 (tty: make FONTX ioctl use
the tty pointer they were actually passed), these ioctls are not used
from userspace, as:
1) they used to be broken (set up font on current console, not the open
one) and racy (before the commit above)
2) KDFONTOP ioctl is used for years instead
Note that PIO_FONTRESET is defunct on most systems as VGA_CONSOLE is set
on them for ages. That turns on BROKEN_GRAPHICS_PROGRAMS which makes
PIO_FONTRESET just return an error.
We are removing KD_FONT_FLAG_OLD here as it was used only by these
removed ioctls. kd.h header exists both in kernel and uapi headers, so
we can remove the kernel one completely. Everyone includeing kd.h will
now automatically get the uapi one.
There are now unused definitions of the ioctl numbers and "struct
consolefontdesc" in kd.h, but as it is a uapi header, I am not touching
these.

Commit c685af1108 ("serial: mvebu-uart: fix tx lost characters") fixed tx
lost characters at low baud rates but started causing tx lost characters
when kernel is going to power off or reboot.
TX_EMP tells us when transmit queue is empty therefore all characters were
transmitted. TX_RDY tells us when CPU can send a new character.
Therefore we need to use different check prior transmitting new character
and different check after all characters were sent.
This patch splits polling code into two functions: wait_for_xmitr() which
waits for TX_RDY and wait_for_xmite() which waits for TX_EMP.
When rebooting A3720 platform without this patch on UART is print only:
[ 42.699

It has been observed that once per 300-1300 port openings the first
transmitted byte is being corrupted on AM3352 ("v" written to FIFO appeared
as "e" on the wire). It only happened if single byte has been transmitted
right after port open, which means, DMA is not used for this transfer and
the corruption never happened afterwards.
Therefore I've carefully re-read the MDR1 errata (link below), which says
"when accessing the MDR1 registers that causes a dummy under-run condition
that will freeze the UART in IrDA transmission. In UART mode, this may
corrupt the transferred data". Strictly speaking,
omap_8250_mdr1_errataset() performs a read access and if the value is the
same as should be written, exits without errata-recommended FIFO reset.
A brief check of the serial_omap_mdr1_errataset() from the competing
omap-serial driver showed it has no read access of MDR1. After removing the
read access from omap_8250_mdr1_errataset() the data corruption never
happened any more.

At the moment opening a serial device node (such as /dev/ttyS3)
succeeds even if there is no actual serial device behind it.
Reading/writing/ioctls fail as expected because the uart port is not
initialized (the type is PORT_UNKNOWN) and the TTY_IO_ERROR error state
bit is set fot the tty.
However setting line discipline does not have these checks
8250_port.c (8250 is the default choice made by univ8250_console_init()).
As the result of PORT_UNKNOWN, uart_port::iobase is NULL which
a platform translates onto some address accessing which produces a crash
like below.
This adds tty_port_initialized() to uart_set_ldisc() to prevent the crash.

Currently, locking of ->session is very inconsistent; most places
protect it using the legacy tty mutex, but disassociate_ctty(),
__do_SAK(), tiocspgrp() and tiocgsid() don't.
Two of the writers hold the ctrl_lock (because they already need it for
->pgrp), but __proc_set_tty() doesn't do that yet.
On a PREEMPT=y system, an unprivileged user can theoretically abuse
this broken locking to read 4 bytes of freed memory via TIOCGSID if
tiocgsid() is preempted long enough at the right point. (Other things
might also go wrong, especially if root-only ioctls are involved; I'm
not sure about that.)
Change the locking on ->session such that:
- tty_lock() is held by all writers: By making disassociate_ctty()
hold it. This should be fine because the same lock can already be
taken through the call to tty_vhangup_session().
The tricky part is that we need to shorten the area covered by
siglock to be able to take tty_lock() without ugly retry logic; as
far as I can tell, this should be fine, since nothing in the
signal_struct is touched in the `if (tty)` branch.
- ctrl_lock is held by all writers: By changing __proc_set_tty() to
hold the lock a little longer.
- All readers that aren't holding tty_lock() hold ctrl_lock: By
adding locking to tiocgsid() and __do_SAK(), and expanding the area
covered by ctrl_lock in tiocspgrp().

tiocspgrp() takes two tty_struct pointers: One to the tty that userspace
passed to ioctl() (`tty`) and one to the TTY being changed (`real_tty`).
These pointers are different when ioctl() is called with a master fd.
To properly lock real_tty->pgrp, we must take real_tty->ctrl_lock.
This bug makes it possible for racing ioctl(TIOCSPGRP, ...) calls on
both sides of a PTY pair to corrupt the refcount of `struct pid`,
leading to use-after-free errors.

hardware which supports both poll_put_char() and poll_get_char().
It's necessary to enable TXEN bit, otherwise, it will cause hardware fault
and kernel panic when calling imx_poll_put_char().
Generally, if use /dev/ttymxc0 as kgdb console as well as system
console, ttymxc0 is initialized early by system console which does enable

Instead of using the array-of-pointers trick to avoid having gcc mess up
the earlycon array stride, specify type alignment when declaring entries
to prevent gcc from increasing alignment.
This is essentially an alternative (one-line) fix to the problem
addressed by commit dd709e72cb ("earlycon: Use a pointer table to fix
__earlycon_table stride").
gcc can increase the alignment of larger objects with static extent as
an optimisation, but this can be suppressed by using the aligned
attribute when declaring variables.
Note that we have been relying on this behaviour for kernel parameters
for 16 years and it indeed hasn't changed since the introduction of the
aligned attribute in gcc-3.1.

stdin, stdout, and stderr standard I/O stream are created for the init
process. They are not available when there is no console registered
for /dev/console. It might lead to a crash when the init process
tries to use them, see the commit 48021f9813 ("printk: handle
blank console arguments passed in.").
Normally, ttySX and ttyX consoles are used as a fallback when no consoles
are defined via the command line, device tree, or SPCR. But there
will be no console registered when an invalid console name is configured
or when the configured consoles do not exist on the system.
Users even try to avoid the console intentionally, for example,
by using console="" or console=null. It is used on production
systems where the serial port or terminal are not visible to
users. Pushing messages to these consoles would just unnecessary
slowdown the system.
Make sure that stdin, stdout, stderr, and /dev/console are always
available by a fallback to the existing ttynull driver. It has
been implemented for exactly this purpose but it was used only
when explicitly configured.

Enabling the lock dependency validator has revealed
that the way spinlocks are used in the IMX serial
port could result in a deadlock.
Specifically, imx_uart_int() acquires a spinlock
without disabling the interrupts, meaning that another
interrupt could come along and try to acquire the same

Here are a small number of small tty and serial fixes for some reported
problems for the tty core, vt code, and some serial drivers.
They include fixes for:
- a buggy and obsolete vt font ioctl removal
- 8250_mtk serial baudrate runtime warnings
- imx serial earlycon build configuration fix
- txx9 serial driver error path cleanup issues
- tty core fix in release_tty that can be triggered by trying to
bind an invalid serial port name to a speakup console device
Almost all of these have been in linux-next without any problems, the
only one that hasn't, just deletes code :)

Further there was only one user ever.
- Android's loadfont, busybox and console-tools only ever use OP_GET
and OP_SET
- fbset documentation only mentions the kernel cmdline font: option,
not anything else.
- systemd used OP_COPY before release 232 published in Nov 2016
Now unfortunately the crucial report seems to have gone down with
gmane, and the commit message doesn't say much. But the pull request
hints at OP_COPY being broken
https://github.com/systemd/systemd/pull/3651
So in other words, this never worked, and the only project which
foolishly every tried to use it, realized that rather quickly too.
Instead of trying to fix security issues here on dead code by adding
missing checks, fix the entire thing by removing the functionality.
Note that systemd code using the OP_COPY function ignored the return
value, so it doesn't matter what we're doing here really - just in
case a lone server somewhere happens to be extremely unlucky and
running an affected old version of systemd. The relevant code from
font_copy_to_all_vcs() in systemd was:
/* copy font from active VT, where the font was uploaded to */
cfo.op = KD_FONT_OP_COPY;
cfo.height = vcs.v_active-1; /* tty1 == index 0 */
(void) ioctl(vcfd, KDFONTOP, &cfo);
Note this just disables the ioctl, garbage collecting the now unused
callbacks is left for -next.

Commit 2ae0b31e0f ("tty: don't crash in tty_init_dev when missing
tty_port") didn't fully prevent the crash as the cleanup path in
tty_init_dev() calls release_tty() which dereferences tty->port
without checking it for non-null.
Add tty->port checks to release_tty to avoid the kernel crash.

Since 699cc4dfd1 (tty: serial: imx: add imx earlycon driver), the earlycon
part of imx serial is a separate driver and isn't necessarily enabled anymore
when the console is enabled. This causes users to loose the earlycon
functionality when upgrading their kenrel configuration via oldconfig.

Mediatek 8250 port supports speed higher than uartclk / 16. If the baud
rates in both the new and the old termios setting are higher than
uartclk / 16, the WARN_ON in uart_get_baud_rate() will be triggered.
Passing NULL as the old termios so uart_get_baud_rate() will use
uartclk / 16 - 1 as the new baud rate which will be replaced by the
original baud rate later by tty_termios_encode_baud_rate() in
mtk8250_set_termios().

UARTs on TI SoCs prior to J7200 don't provide independent control over
RX FIFO not empty interrupt (RHR_IT) and RX timeout interrupt.
Starting with J7200 SoC, its possible to disable RHR_IT independent of
RX timeout interrupt using bit 2 of IER2 register. So disable RHR_IT
once RX DMA is started so as to avoid spurious interrupt being raised
when data is in the RX FIFO but is yet to be drained by DMA (a known
errata in older SoCs).

Setting of function key strings is now very complex. It uses a global
buffer 'func_buf' which is prefilled in defkeymap.c_shipped. Then there
is also an index table called 'func_table'. So initially, we have
something like this:
char func_buf[] = "\e[[A\0" // for F1
"\e[[B\0" // for F2
...;
char *func_table[] = {
func_buf + 0, // for F1
func_buf + 5, // for F2
... }
When a user changes some specific func string by KDSKBSENT, it is
changed in 'func_buf'. If it is shorter or equal to the current one, it
is handled by a very quick 'strcpy'.
When the user's string is longer, the whole 'func_buf' is reallocated to
allow expansion somewhere in the middle. The buffer before the user's
string is copied, the user's string appended and the rest appended too.
Now, the index table (func_table) needs to be recomputed, of course.
One more complication is the held spinlock -- we have to unlock,
reallocate, lock again and do the whole thing again to be sure noone
raced with us.
In this patch, we chose completely orthogonal approach: when the user's
string is longer than the current one, we simply assign the 'kstrdup'ed
copy to the index table (func_table) and modify func_buf in no way. We
only need to make sure we free the old entries. So we need a bitmap
is_kmalloc and free the old entries (but not the original func_buf
rodata string).
Also note that we do not waste so much space as previous approach. We
only allocate space for single entries which are longer, while before,
the whole buffer was duplicated plus space for the longer string.

KDGKBSENT (the getter) needs only 'user_kdgkb->kb_func' from the
userspace, i.e. the index. Then it needs a buffer for a local copy of
'kb_string'.
KDSKBSENT (the setter) needs a copy up to the length of
'user_kdgkb->kb_string'.
That means, we obtain the index before the switch-case and use it in
both paths and:
1) allocate full space in the getter case, and
2) copy the string only in the setter case. We do it by strndup_user
helper now which was not available when this function was written.
Given we copy the two members of 'struct kbsentry' separately, we no
longer need a local definition. Hence we need to change all the sizeofs
here too.

Both read-side users of func_table/func_buf need locking. Without that,
one can easily confuse the code by repeatedly setting altering strings
like:
while (1)
for (a = 0; a < 2; a++) {
struct kbsentry kbs = {};
strcpy((char *)kbs.kb_string, a ? ".\n" : "88888\n");
ioctl(fd, KDSKBSENT, &kbs);
}
When that program runs, one can get unexpected output by holding F1
(note the unxpected period on the last line):
.
88888
.8888
So protect all accesses to 'func_table' (and func_buf) by preexisting
'func_buf_lock'.
It is easy in 'k_fn' handler as 'puts_queue' is expected not to sleep.
On the other hand, KDGKBSENT needs a local (atomic) copy of the string
because copy_to_user can sleep. Use already allocated, but unused
'kbs->kb_string' for that purpose.
Note that the program above needs at least CAP_SYS_TTY_CONFIG.
This depends on the previous patch and on the func_buf_lock lock added
in commit 46ca3f735f (tty/vt: fix write/write race in ioctl(KDSKBSENT)
handler) in 5.2.
Likely fixes CVE-2020-25656.

Use 'strlen' of the string, add one for NUL terminator and simply do
'copy_to_user' instead of the explicit 'for' loop. This makes the
KDGKBSENT case more compact.
The only thing we need to take care about is NULL 'func_table[i]'. Use
an empty string in that case.
The original check for overflow could never trigger as the func_buf
strings are always shorter or equal to 'struct kbsentry's.

Prior to the commit that this one fixes, the FIFO size was derived from
the read-only register LPUARTx_FIFO[TXFIFOSIZE] using the following
formula:
TX FIFO size = 2 ^ (LPUARTx_FIFO[TXFIFOSIZE] - 1)
The documentation for LS1021A is a mess. Under chapter 26.1.3 LS1021A
LPUART module special consideration, it mentions TXFIFO_SZ and RXFIFO_SZ
being equal to 4, and in the register description for LPUARTx_FIFO, it
shows the out-of-reset value of TXFIFOSIZE and RXFIFOSIZE fields as "011",
even though these registers read as "101" in reality.
And when LPUART on LS1021A was working, the "101" value did correspond
to "16 datawords", by applying the formula above, even though the
documentation is wrong again (!!!!) and says that "101" means 64 datawords
(hint: it doesn't).
So the "new" formula created by commit f77ebb241c has all the premises
of being wrong for LS1021A, because it relied only on false data and no
actual experimentation.
Interestingly, in commit c2f448cff2 ("tty: serial: fsl_lpuart: add
LS1028A support"), Michael Walle applied a workaround to this by manually
setting the FIFO widths for LS1028A. It looks like the same values are
used by LS1021A as well, in fact.
When the driver thinks that it has a deeper FIFO than it really has,
getty (user space) output gets truncated.
Many thanks to Michael for pointing out where to look.

Commit 293f899594 ("tty: serial: 21285: stop using the unused[]

transmit interrupt being disabled when there are no characters to
transmit - disabling the transmit interrupt at the interrupt controller
is the only way to stop an interrupt storm. If this interrupt is not
disabled when there are no transmit characters, we end up with an
interrupt storm which prevents the machine making forward progress.

- A bunch of cleanup and removal of platform data for TI/OMAP platforms,

After some unsuccessful attempts to use sysrq over console, figured

Tested by sending BREAK followed by a sysrq command inside

BREAK + h, t, e, b, c
Tested also sending a command after 5 secs after BREAK, that's

Currently, the RX interrupt logic uses the RXEMPTY interrupt, with the
RXEMPTYINV bit set, which means we get an RX interrupt as soon as the
RX FIFO is non-empty.
However, with the MAX310X having a FIFO of 128 bytes, this makes very
poor use of the FIFO: we trigger an interrupt as soon as the RX FIFO
has one byte, which means a lot of interrupts, each only collecting a
few bytes from the FIFO, causing a significant CPU load.
Instead this commit relies on two other RX interrupt events:
- MAX310X_IRQ_RXFIFO_BIT, which triggers when the RX FIFO has reached
a certain threshold, which we define to be half of the FIFO
size. This ensure we get an interrupt before the RX FIFO fills up.
- MAX310X_LSR_RXTO_BIT, which triggers when the RX FIFO has received
some bytes, and then no more bytes are received for a certain
time. Arbitrarily, this time is defined to the time is takes to
receive 4 characters.
On a Microchip SAMA5D3 platform that is receiving 20 bytes every 16ms
over one MAX310X UART, this patch has allowed to reduce the CPU
consumption of the interrupt handler thread from ~25% to 6-7%.

It has been discovered that there is a potential deadlock between
the clock-change-notifier thread and the UART port suspending one:
CPU0 (suspend CPU/UART) CPU1 (update clock)
---- ----
lock(&port->mutex);
lock((work_completion)(&data->clk_work));
lock(&port->mutex);
lock((work_completion)(&data->clk_work));
*** DEADLOCK ***
The best way to fix this is to eliminate the CPU0
port->mutex/work-completion scenario. So we suggest to register and
unregister the clock-notifier during the DW APB UART port probe/remove
procedures, instead of doing that at the points of the port
startup/shutdown.

It is erroneous to update the TTY port baud rate if it hasn't been
initialized yet, because in that case the TTY struct isn't set. So there
is no termios structure to get and re-calculate the baud if the current
baud can't be reached. Let's skip the baud rate update then until the port
is fully initialized.
Note the update UART clock method still sets the uartclk member with a new
ref clock value even if the port is turned off. The new UART ref clock
rate will be used later on the port starting up procedure.

The IPG clock is disabled at the end of imx_uart_shutdown(); we really
don't want to run any IRQ handlers after this point.
At least on i.MX8MN, the UART will happily continue to generate interrupts
even with its clocks disabled, but in this state, all register writes are
ignored (which will cause the shadow registers to differ from the actual
register values, resulting in all kinds of weirdness).
In a transfer without DMA, this could lead to the following sequence of
events:
- The UART finishes its transmission while imx_uart_shutdown() is run,
triggering the TXDC interrupt (we can trigger this fairly reliably by
writing a single byte to the TTY and closing it right away)
- imx_uart_shutdown() finishes, disabling the UART clocks
- imx_uart_int() -> imx_uart_transmit_buffer() -> imx_uart_stop_tx()
imx_uart_stop_tx() should now clear UCR4_TCEN to disable the TXDC
interrupt, but this register write is ineffective. This results in an
interrupt storm.
To disable all interrupts in the same place, and to avoid setting UCR4
twice, clearing UCR4_OREN is moved below del_timer_sync() as well; this
should be harmless.

This is the port of the commit db1b5bc047 ("serial: 8250: Fix TX
interrupt handling condition") to the 8250_fsl irq handling logic.
Interrupt handler checked THRE bit (transmitter holding register
empty) in LSR to detect if TX fifo is empty.
In case when there is only receive interrupts the TX handling
got called because THRE bit in LSR is set when there is no
transmission (FIFO empty). TX handling caused TX stop, which in
RS-485 half-duplex mode actually resets receiver FIFO. This is not
desired during reception because of possible data loss.
The fix is to check if THRI is set in IER in addition of the TX
fifo status. THRI in IER is set when TX is started and cleared
when TX is stopped.
This ensures that TX handling is only called when there is really
transmission on going and an interrupt for THRE and not when there
are only RX interrupts.

The issue being that CPU0 takes 'port_lock' on the irq path in pl011_int()

syzbot is reporting UAF/OOB read at bit_putcs()/soft_cursor() [1][2], for
vt_resizex() from ioctl(VT_RESIZEX) allows setting font height larger than
actual font height calculated by con_font_set() from ioctl(PIO_FONT).
Since fbcon_set_font() from con_font_set() allocates minimal amount of
memory based on actual font height calculated by con_font_set(),
use of vt_resizex() can cause UAF/OOB read for font data.
VT_RESIZEX was introduced in Linux 1.3.3, but it is unclear that what
comes to the "+ more" part, and I couldn't find a user of VT_RESIZEX.
#define VT_RESIZE 0x5609 /* set kernel's idea of screensize */
#define VT_RESIZEX 0x560A /* set kernel's idea of screensize + more */
So far we are not aware of syzbot reports caused by setting non-zero value
to v_vlin parameter. But given that it is possible that nobody is using
VT_RESIZEX, we can try removing support for v_clin and v_vlin parameters.
Therefore, this patch effectively makes VT_RESIZEX behave like VT_RESIZE,
with emitting a message if somebody is still using v_clin and/or v_vlin
parameters.

Fix the port-lock initialisation regression introduced by commit
a3cb39d258 ("serial: core: Allow detach and attach serial device for
console") by making sure that the lock is again initialised during
console setup.
The console may be registered before the serial controller has been
probed in which case the port lock needs to be initialised during
console setup by a call to uart_set_options(). The console-detach
changes introduced a regression in several drivers by effectively
removing that initialisation by not initialising the lock when the port
is used as a console (which is always the case during console setup).
Add back the early lock initialisation and instead use a new
console-reinit flag to handle the case where a console is being
re-attached through sysfs.
The question whether the console-detach interface should have been added
in the first place is left for another discussion.
Note that the console-enabled check in uart_set_options() is not
redundant because of kgdboc, which can end up reinitialising an already
enabled console (see commit 42b6a1baa3 ("serial_core: Don't
re-initialize a previously initialized spinlock.")).

Commit f743061a85 ("serial: core: Initialise spin lock before use in
uart_configure_port()") tried to work around a breakage introduced by
commit a3cb39d258 ("serial: core: Allow detach and attach serial
device for console") by adding a second initialisation of the port lock
when registering the port.
As reported by the build robots [1], this doesn't really solve the
regression introduced by the console-detach changes and also adds a
second redundant initialisation of the lock for normal ports.
Start cleaning up this mess by removing the redundant initialisation and
making sure that the port lock is again initialised once-only for ports
that aren't already in use as a console.

Commit c5cbc78acf ("tty: serial: qcom_geni_serial: Initialize baud
in qcom_geni_console_setup") fixed a bug by initting a variable that
was used in some cases without initialization. However, the "default"
baud rate picked by that CL was probably not the best choice. The
chances that anyone out there is trying to run a system with kernel
messages piped out over a 9600 baud serial port is just about nil.
Console messages are printed in a blocking manner. At 9600 baud we
print about 1 character per millisecond which means that printing a
40-byte message to the console will take ~40 ms. While it would
probably work, it's going to make boot _very_ slow and probably cause
the occasional timeout here and there in drivers (heck, even at 115200
console delays can wreck havoc).
This has already bit at least two people that I'm aware of that tried
to enable serial console by just adding "console=ttyMSM0" (instead of
"console=ttyMSM0,115200n8") to the command line, so it seems like it'd
be nice to fix.
Let's switch the default to 115200.

The goal is to cleanup, merge and finally make the Samsung S3C24xx and

to keep this code still maintainable.
This pulls also branch with changes for Samsung SoC sound drivers from

The code currently NULLs tty->driver_data in hvcs_close() with the
intent of informing the next call to hvcs_open() that device needs to be
reconfigured. However, when hvcs_cleanup() is called we copy hvcsd from
tty->driver_data which was previoulsy NULLed by hvcs_close() and our
call to tty_port_put(&hvcsd->port) doesn't actually do anything since
&hvcsd->port ends up translating to NULL by chance. This has the side
effect that when hvcs_remove() is called we have one too many port
references preventing hvcs_destuct_port() from ever being called. This
also prevents us from reusing the /dev/hvcsX node in a future
hvcs_probe() and we can eventually run out of /dev/hvcsX devices.
Fix this by waiting to NULL tty->driver_data in hvcs_cleanup().
