The "run_to_completion" mode was somewhat broken. Locks need to be avoided in
run_to_completion mode, and it shouldn't be used by normal users, just
internally for panic situations.
This patch removes locks in run_to_completion mode and removes the user call
for setting the mode. The only user was the poweroff code, but it was easily
converted to use the polling interface.

A command that causes a line feed while a background color is active,
such as
perl -e 'print "x" x 60, "\e[44m", "x" x 40, "\e[0m\n"'
and
perl -e 'print "x" x 40, "\e[44m\n", "x" x 40, "\e[0m\n"'
causes the line that was started as a result of the line feed to be completely
filled with the currently active background color instead of the default
color.
When scrolling, part of the current screen is memcpy'd/memmove'd to the new
region, and the new line(s) that will appear as a result are cleared using
memset. However, the lines are cleared with vc->vc_video_erase_char, causing
them to be colored with the currently active background color. This is
different from X11 terminal emulators which always paint the new lines with
the default background color (e.g. `xterm -bg black`).
The clear operation (\e[1J and \e[2J) also use vc_video_erase_char, so a new
vc->vc_scrl_erase_char is introduced with contains the erase character used
for scrolling, which is built from vc->vc_def_color instead of vc->vc_color.

SysRQ-P is not always useful on SMP systems, since it usually ends up showing
the backtrace of a CPU that is doing just fine, instead of the backtrace of
the CPU that is having problems.
This patch adds SysRQ show-all-cpus(L), which shows the backtrace of every
active CPU in the system. It skips idle CPUs because some SMP systems are
just too large and we already know what the backtrace of the idle task looks
like.

Make /dev/kmem a config option; /dev/kmem is VERY rarely used, and when
used, it's generally for no good (rootkits tend to be the most common
users). With this config option, users have the choice to disable
/dev/kmem, saving some size as well.
A patch to disable /dev/kmem has been in the Fedora and RHEL kernels for
4+ years now without any known problems or legit users of /dev/kmem.

Introduce a node_zonelist() helper function. It is used to lookup the
appropriate zonelist given a node and a GFP mask. The patch on its own is a
cleanup but it helps clarify parts of the two-zonelist-per-node patchset. If
necessary, it can be merged with the next patch in this set without problems.

Kconfig tweaks to help reduce RTC configuration bugs, by avoiding
legacy RTC drivers when the generic RTC framework is enabled:
- If rtc-cmos is selected, disable the legacy rtc driver;
- When using generic RTC on x86, enable rtc-cmos by default;
- In the old "chardev RTC" section of Kconfig, add a comment
warning people off these (seven) legacy RTC drivers when
the generic framework is in use.
People can still use the legacy drivers if they want (or need) to.
This doesn't fix the broken dependencies for the legacy "CMOS" RTC driver.
Ideally it would be a full list of platforms where it works, not a partial
list of ones where it won't. Or better yet, it would depend on a
"HAVE_CMOS_RTC" flag defined by various platforms ... surely there's a
Kconfig style guideline lurking there.

Remove the code that automatically disables TTY input auditing in processes
that open TTYs when they have no other TTY open; this heuristic was
intended to automatically handle daemons, but it has false positives (e.g.
with sshd) that make it impossible to control TTY input auditing from a PAM
module. With this patch, TTY input auditing is controlled from user-space
only.
On the other hand, not even for daemons does it make sense to audit "input"
from PTY masters; this data was produced by a program writing to the PTY
slave, and does not represent data entered by the user.

This patch standardized the string auditing interfaces. No userspace
changes will be visible and this is all just cleanup and consistancy
work. We have the following string audit interfaces to use:

Previously I added sessionid output to all audit messages where it was
available but we still didn't know the sessionid of the sender of
netlink messages. This patch adds that information to netlink messages
so we can audit who sent netlink messages.

This re-works the DRM internals to provide a better interface for drivers
to expose vblank on multiple crtcs.
It also includes work done by Michel on making i915 triple buffering and pageflipping work properly.

The batchbuffer submission paths were fixed to use the 965-specific command,
but the vblank tasklet was not. When the older version is sent, the 965 will
lock up.

Introduce phys_mem_access_prot_allowed(), which checks whether the mapping
is possible, without any conflicts and returns success or failure based on that.
phys_mem_access_prot() by itself does not allow failure case. This ability
to return error is needed for PAT where we may have aliasing conflicts.
x86 setup __HAVE_PHYS_MEM_ACCESS_PROT and move x86 specific code out of
/dev/mem into arch specific area.

Earlier patch that introduced CONFIG_NONPROMISC_DEVMEM, did the
range_is_allowed() check only for read and write. Add range_is_allowed()
check to mmap of /dev/mem as well.
Changes the paramaters of range_is_allowed() to pfn and size to handle
more than 32 bits of physical address on 32 bit arch cleanly.

This patch introduces a restriction on /dev/mem: Only non-memory can be
read or written unless the newly introduced config option is set.
The X server needs access to /dev/mem for the PCI space, but it doesn't need
access to memory; both the file permissions and SELinux permissions of /dev/mem
just make X effectively super-super powerful. With the exception of the
BIOS area, there's just no valid app that uses /dev/mem on actual memory.
Other popular users of /dev/mem are rootkits and the like.
(note: mmap access of memory via /dev/mem was already not allowed since
a really long time)
People who want to use /dev/mem for kernel debugging can enable the config
option.
The restrictions of this patch have been in the Fedora and RHEL kernels for
at least 4 years without any problems.

The recent irq cleanups for arch/arm/mach-integrator/time.c and
drivers/char/mwave/tp3780i.c changed the request_irq() dev_id
parameter, but neglected to change the matching free_irq() parameter,
thus creating a bug upon irq de-registration.
Given that the impetus for the changes is not yet accepted upstream,
it is best to revert the irq cleanups.
Mostly. A comment is added to time.c to reduce future confusion,
of type that led to my time.c cleanup in the first place.

After 2.6.24 there was a plan to make the PM core acquire all device
semaphores during a suspend/hibernation to protect itself from
concurrent operations involving device objects. That proved to be
too heavy-handed and we found a better way to achieve the goal, but
before it happened, we had introduced the functions
device_pm_schedule_removal() and destroy_suspended_device() to allow
drivers to "safely" destroy a suspended device and we had adapted some
drivers to use them. Now that these functions are no longer necessary,
it seems reasonable to remove them and modify their users to use the
normal device unregistration instead.

None of these files use any of the functionality promised by
asm/semaphore.h. It's possible that they rely on it dragging in some
unrelated header file, but I can't build all these files, so we'll have
fix any build failures as they come up.

The api for hardware random number generators is currently limited to
devices that never fail. If the hardware is registered as a source for
random numbers it has to work. This prevents the use of i/o based
random number devices where the i/o might fail.
Add a check for errors after the read from a hardware random number device.
This patch is required to support large random numbers retrieved
from the CEX2C cards on System z.

This fixes a potential bug at drivers/char/hvc_beat.c.
- hvc_put_term_char routine will decrement "rest" variable twice,
and forget to advance "buf" pointer by "nlen" bytes.
This bug was not hit previously because the output handler in
drivers/char/hvc_console.c splits given output into 16 bytes
at maximum.

Now that we're mapping registers in the DRM driver at load time, the
driver actually checks the PCI ID, so we need to make sure the macros
have all the right bits (and longer term use the DRM headers as the sole
copy of the PCI & register definitions).
This patch adds 945GME support to the DRM headers, fixing a regression
reported in http://bugzilla.kernel.org/show_bug.cgi?id=10395.

This patch fixes bits of the DRM so to make the radeon DRI work on
non-cache coherent PCI DMA variants of the PowerPC processors.
It moves the few places that needs change to wrappers to that
other architectures with similar issues can easily add their
own changes to those wrappers, at least until we have more useful
generic kernel API.

This interface was originally designed wrong, confusing bit-fields and
integers, major brown paper bag going back many years...
But userspace only ever used 4 values so fix the interface for new
users and fix the implementation to deal with the 4 values userspace
has ever emitted (0x1, 0x2, 0x3, 0x6).

It appears that in some cases, the sync word might not be recognized
by the hardware correctly. If this happens, then attempting to read
from the port results in an unrecoverable error because of the design
of the FPGA core. This patch updates the code to check the status of
the device before reading the IDCODE, in order to avoid entering this
unrecoverable state. This patch also adds additional NOOP commands
into the sychronization sequence, which appears to be necessary to
avoid the condition on some hardware.

Both the buffer-based and fifo-based icap cores have a status
register. Previously, this was only used internally to check whether
transactions have completed. However, the status can be useful to the
main driver as well. This patch exposes these status functions to the
main driver along with some masks for the differnet bits.

Update documentation for the hw_random support to be current:
- Documentation/hw_random.txt has been updated to reflect the
current code: it's a framework now, a "core" with a small
sysfs interface, that hardware-specific drivers plug in to.
Text specific to Intel hardware is now at the end.
- Kconfig now references the Documentation/hw_random.txt file
and better explains what this really does.
Both chunks of documentation now higlight the fact that the kernel entropy
pool is maintained by "rngd", and this driver has nothing directly to do with
that important task.

unsigned long != __le32, TYVM, and unsigned char[4] is not guaranteed
to be aligned for u32.
While we are at it, sanitize sOutDW() a bit - have it take Byte_t * and
handle dereferencing internally.
NB: sWriteTxPrioByte() is almost certainly buggered on big-endian and is
missing cpu_to_le16() on assignments to *WordPtr; I've left it alone for now.

It's worth remembering that all new bright ideas on how to make this command reader work properly and according to docs will probably fail :( Bring in some old code.
Also allow a larger SG-DMA download stride, and remove unnecessary waits for
command regulators pauses.

The i915_vblank_swap() function schedules an automatic buffer swap
upon receipt of the vertical sync interrupt. Such an operation is
lengthy so it can't be allowed to happen in normal interrupt context,
thus the DRM implements this by scheduling the work in a kernel
softirq-scheduled tasklet. In order for the buffer swap to work
safely, the DRM's central lock must be taken, via a call to
drm_lock_take() located in drivers/char/drm/drm_irq.c within the
function drm_locked_tasklet_func(). The lock-taking logic uses a
non-interrupt-blocking spinlock to implement the manipulations needed
to take the lock. This semantic would be safe if all attempts to use
the spinlock only happen from process context. However this buffer
swap happens from softirq context which is really a form of interrupt
context. Thus we have an unsafe situation, in that
drm_locked_tasklet_func() can block on a spinlock already taken by a
thread in process context which will never get scheduled again because
of the blocked softirq tasklet. This wedges the kernel hard.
To trigger this bug, run a dual-head cloned mode configuration which
uses the i915 drm, then execute an opengl application which
synchronizes buffer swaps against the vertical sync interrupt. In my
testing, a lockup always results after running anywhere from 5 minutes
to an hour and a half. I believe dual-head is needed to really
trigger the problem because then the vertical sync interrupt handling
is no longer predictable (due to being interrupt-sourced from two
different heads running at different speeds). This raises the
probability of the tasklet trying to run while the userspace DRI is
doing things to the GPU (and manipulating the DRM lock).
The fix is to change the relevant spinlock semantics to be the
interrupt-blocking form. After this change I am no longer able to
trigger the lockup; the longest test run so far was 20 hours (test
stopped after that point).
Note: I have examined the places where this spinlock is being
employed; all are reasonably short bounded sequences and should be
suitable for interrupts being blocked without impacting overall kernel
interrupt response latency.

randconfig testing found a bootup lockup in drivers/char/esp.c because
of a spinlock that wasn't correctly initialized.
I'm not sure why it became more prominent in 2.6.25-rc4, the bug seems
rather old and i've been doing allyesconfig bootups for ages with
CONFIG_ESP enabled.
This fixes this bootup lockup:

In commit e6bafba5b4 ("wmi: (!x & y)
strikes again"), a bug was fixed that involved converting !x & y to !(x
& y). The code below shows the same pattern, and thus should perhaps be
fixed in the same way.
This is not tested and clearly changes the semantics, so it is only
something to consider.

VT notifier callbacks need to be aware of console switches. This is already
partially done from console_callback(), but at that time fg_console, cursor
positions, etc. are not yet updated and hence screen readers fetch the old
values.
This adds an update notify after all of the values are updated in
redraw_screen(vc, 1).

In hibernate, we may end up calling the VGA save regs function twice, so we need to make sure it's idempotent. That means leaving ARX in index mode after the first save operation. Fixes hibernate on 965.

On many chipsets, the checks for DPLL enable or VGA mode will prevent the pipeconf regs from being restored, which could result in a blank display or X failing to come back after resume. So restore them unconditionally along with actually restoring pipe B's palette correctly.

On resume, if the interrupt state isn't restored correctly, we may end
up with a flood of unexpected or ill-timed interrupts, which could cause
the kernel to disable the interrupt or vblank events to happen at the
wrong time. So save/restore them properly.

Several AGP drivers right now use ioremap_nocache() on kernel ram in order
to turn a page of regular memory uncached.
There are two problems with this:
1) This is a total nightmare for the ioremap() implementation to keep
various mappings of the same page coherent.
2) It's a total nightmare for the AGP code since it adds a ton of
complexity in terms of keeping track of 2 different pointers to
the same thing, in terms of error handling etc etc.
This patch fixes this by making the AGP drivers use the new
set_memory_XX APIs instead.
Note: amd-k7-agp.c is built on Alpha too, and generic.c is built
on ia64 as well, which do not yet have the set_memory_*() APIs,
so for them some we have a few ugly #ifdefs - hopefully they'll
be fixed soon.

select strikes again. ipwireless selects PPP which in turn tries to select
SLHC, both of which are technically "protected" by an if NETDEVICES
in drivers/net/Kconfig. This leads to .config hilarity, with net suddenly
ending up in the SCSI menu:

The device is manufactured by IPWireless. In some countries (for
example Czech Republic, T-Mobile ISP) this card is shipped for service
called UMTS 4G.
It's a piece of PCMCIA "4G" UMTS PPP networking hardware that presents
itself as a serial character device (i.e. looks like usual modem to
userspace, accepts AT commands, etc).

While reading some code I stumbled across the use of 'err' in
drivers/char/drm/mga_dma.c::mga_do_cleanup_dma() and I think there's a small
problem.
The variable is only used inside #if __OS_HAS_AGP which is fine, but all that
ever happens is an assignment to the variable - it is never actually used for
anything. The variable is nicely initialized to zero which is also what the
return statement at the end of function returns (always at the moment).
It looks to me like that function should be returning 'err' instead of always
just returning 0. Here's a patch to do that.

Allow drivers to addmaps that won't be removed by lastclose or unload.
The unload needs to be re-ordered to avoid removing the hashs before
the driver has removed the final maps.

Previously any ioctls that weren't explicitly listed in the compat ioctl
table would fail with ENOTTY. If the incoming ioctl number is outside the
range of the table, assume that it Just Works, and pass it off to drm_ioctl.
This make the fence related ioctls work on 64-bit PowerPC.

The i830 and newer intel 2D code adds the AGP base to map offsets already,
because it wasn't doing the AGP enable which used to set dev->agp->base.

Add suspend/resume support to the i915 driver. Moves some of the
initialization into the driver load routine, and fixes up places where we
assumed no dev_private existed in some of the cleanup paths. This allows
us to suspend/resume properly even if X isn't running.

Make DRM devices use real Linux devices instead of class devices, which are
going away. While we're at it, clean up some of the interfaces to take
struct drm_device * or struct device * and use the global drm_class where
needed instead of passing it around.

Fix two N_TTY line discipline issues related to resuming a stopped TTY
(typically done with ctrl-S):
1) Fix handling of character that resumes a stopped TTY (with IXANY)
With "stty ixany", the TTY line discipline would lose the first character
after the stop, so typing, for example, "hi^Sthere" resulted in "hihere"
(the 't' would cause the resume after ^S, but it would then be thrown away
rather than processed as an input character). This was inconsistent with
the behavior of other Unix systems.
2) Fix interrupt signal (e.g. ctrl-C) behavior in stopped TTYs
With "stty -ixany" (often the default), interrupt signals were ignored
in a stopped TTY until the TTY was resumed with the start char (typically
ctrl-Q), which was inconsistent with the behavior of other Unix systems.

Turn on INTR/QUIT/SUSP echoing in the N_TTY line discipline (e.g. ctrl-C
will appear as "^C" if stty echoctl is set and ctrl-C is set as INTR).
Linux seems to be the only unix-like OS (recently I've verified this on
Solaris, BSD, and Mac OS X) that does *not* behave this way, and I really
miss this as a good visual confirmation of the interrupt of a program in
the console or xterm. I remember this fondly from many Unixs I've used
over the years as well. Bringing this to Linux also seems like a good way
to make it yet more compliant with standard unix-like behavior.

"SRC Bits[9:8] Noise source select (I): These bits control the two noise
sources on the processor that input bits to the accumulation buffers.
On Nehemiah processors prior to stepping 8, these bits are reserved

The clean up procedure now uses platform device "release" callback to
handle memory clean up. For this purpose "release" function callback was
added to struct tpm_vendor_specific, so hw device driver provider can get
called when it is safe to remove all allocated resources.
This is supposed to fix a bug in device removal, where device while in
receive function (waiting on timeout) was prone to segfault, if the
tpm_chip struct was unallocated before the timeout expired (in
tpm_remove_hardware).

After analyzing the elements that save_flags/cli/sti/restore_flags were
protecting, convert their usages to a global spinlock (the easiest and
most obvious next-step). There were some usages of flags being
intentionally cached, because the code already knew the state of
interrupts. These have been taken into account.
This allows us to remove CONFIG_BROKEN_ON_SMP. Completely untested.

This includes code for new fifo-based xps_hwicap in addition to the
older opb_hwicap, which has a significantly different interface. The
common code between the two drivers is largely shared.
Significant differences exists between this driver and what is
supported in the EDK drivers. In particular, most of the
architecture-specific code for reconfiguring individual FPGA resources
has been removed. This functionality is likely better provided in a
user-space support library. In addition, read and write access is
supported. In addition, although the xps_hwicap cores support
interrupt-driver mode, this driver only supports polled operation, in
order to make the code simpler, and since the interrupt processing
overhead is likely to slow down the throughput under Linux.

Convert the io_req_t members to unsigned int, to allow use on machines with
more than 16 bits worth of IO ports (i.e. secondary busses on ppc64, etc).
There was only a couple of places in drivers where a change was needed. I
left printk formats alone (there are lots of %04x-style formats in there),
mostly to not change the format on the platforms that only have 16-bit io
addresses, but also because the padding doesn't really add all that much value
most of the time.
I found only one sprintf of an address, and upsized the string accordingly (I
doubt anyone will have anywhere near INT_MAX as irq value, but at least
there's room for it now).

The flush code resource handling was having problems where some BIOS
reserve the resource in a pnp block and some don't.
Also there was a bug in that configure was being called at resume
and resetting some of the structs.

security is not safe. Switch to a capability check.

This is a bit of a large hammer but it makes sure the chipset is flushed
by writing out 1k of data to an uncached page. We may be able to get better
information in the future on how to this better.

This adds support for flushing the chipsets on the 915, 945, 965 and G33
families of Intel chips.
The BIOS doesn't seem to always allocate the BAR on the 965 chipsets
so I have to use pci resource code to create a resource
It adds an export for pcibios_align_resource.
This bumps the AGP interface to 0.103.
Certain Intel chipsets contains a global write buffer, and this can require
flushing from the drm or X.org to make sure all data has hit RAM before
initiating a GPU transfer, due to a lack of coherency with the integrated
graphics device and this buffer.
This just adds generic support to the AGP interfaces, a follow-on patch
will add support to the Intel driver to use this interface.

Drivers that register a ->fault handler, but do not range-check the
offset argument, must set VM_DONTEXPAND in the vm_flags in order to
prevent an expanding mremap from overflowing the resource.
I've audited the tree and attempted to fix these problems (usually by
adding VM_DONTEXPAND where it is not obvious).

Previously we used a type/len pair within the config space, but this
seems overkill. We now simply define a structure which represents the
layout in the config space: the config space can now only be extended
at the end.
The main driver-visible changes:
1) We indicate what fields are present with an explicit feature bit.
2) Virtqueues are explicitly numbered, and not in the config space.

In order to correlate audit records to an individual login add a session
id. This is incremented every time a user logs in and is included in
almost all messages which currently output the auid. The field is
labeled ses= or oses=

callers to do a global tlb flush after the function call; forgetting this is

the previous patch in the old RTC driver. It also removes the direct
rtc_interrupt() call from arch/x86/kernel/hpetc.c so that there's finally no
(code) dependency to CONFIG_RTC in arch/x86/kernel/hpet.c.
Because of this, it's possible to compile the drivers/char/rtc.ko driver as
module and still use the HPET emulation functionality. This is also expressed
in Kconfig.

Looks like IRQ 31 is assigned to timer 3, even without the patch!
I wonder who wrote the number 31. But the manual says that it is
zero by default.
I think we should check whether the timer has been allocated an IRQ before
proceeding to assign one to it. Here is a patch that does this.

The userspace API for the HPET (see Documentation/hpet.txt) did not work. The
HPET_IE_ON ioctl was failing as there was no IRQ assigned to the timer
device. This patch fixes it by allocating IRQs to timer blocks in the HPET.

switch it to use a kref instead, which is all that is needed, and is

The savestate command structure was being overwritten by the result of
running the TPM_SaveState command after one run, so make it a local
variable to the function instead of a global variable that gets
overwritten.

Cleaning out all the incorrect 'no change made' checks for termios
settings showed up a problem with the PL2303. The hardware here seems to
lose sync and bits if you tell it to make no changes. This shows up with
a real world application.
To fix this the driver check for meaningful hardware changes is restored
but doing the tests correctly and as a tty layer function so it doesn't
get duplicated wrongly everywhere if other drivers turn out to need it.

Commit 5a52bd4a2d introduced a subtle logic
change in tty_wait_until_sent(). The original version would only error out
of the 'do { ... } while (timeout)' loop if signal_pending() evaluated to
true; a timeout or break due to an empty buffer would fall out of the loop
and into the tty->driver->wait_until_sent handling. The current
implementation will error out on either a pending signal or an empty
buffer, falling through to the tty->driver->wait_until_sent handling only
on a timeout.
The ->wait_until_sent() will not be reached if the buffer empties before
timeout jiffies have elapsed. This behavior differs from that prior to commit
5a52bd4a2d.
I turned this up while using a little serial download utility to bootstrap an
ARM-based eval board. The util worked fine on 2.6.22.x, but consistently
failed on 2.6.23.x. Once I'd determined that, I narrowed things down with git
bisect, and found the above difference in logic in tty_wait_until_sent() by
inspection.
This change reverts the logic flow in tty_wait_until_sent() to match that
prior to the aforementioned commit.

The AMD CS5535/CS5536 GPIO has two alternate output modes: AUX-1 and AUX-2.
When either AUX is enabled, the cs5535_gpio driver cannot control the
output.
Some BIOS code for the Geode processor enables AUX-1 for GPIO-1, which
configures it as the PC BEEP output.
This patch will disable AUX-1 and AUX-2 when the user enables output.

During the initialization of the TPM TIS driver, the necessary locality has
to be requested earlier in the init-process. Depending on the used TPM
chip, this leads to wrong information. For example: Lenovo X61s with Atmel
TPM:
tpm_tis 00:0a: 1.2 TPM (device-id 0xFFFF, rev-id 255)
But correct is:
tpm_tis 00:0c: 1.2 TPM (device-id 0x3203, rev-id 9)
This short patch fixes this issue.

The count of legacy pty devices can be set by a kernel commandline
parameter. For the distro kernel, we would like to disable all pty's
by default, but keep the opportunity to request devices on the kernel
commandline.

The APM emulation is currently broken as a result of commit
8314418629
"Freezer: make kernel threads nonfreezable by default"
that removed the PF_NOFREEZE annotations from apm_ioctl() without adding
the appropriate freezer hooks. Fix it and remove the unnecessary variable flags
from apm_ioctl().

Firmware like PNPBIOS or ACPI can report the address space consumed by the
RTC. The actual space consumed may be less than the size (RTC_IO_EXTENT)
assumed by the RTC driver.
The PNP core doesn't request resources yet, but I'd like to make it do so.
If/when it does, the RTC_IO_EXTENT request may fail, which prevents the RTC
driver from loading.
Since we only use the RTC index and data registers at RTC_PORT(0) and
RTC_PORT(1), we can fall back to requesting just enough space for those.
If the PNP core requests resources, this results in typical I/O port usage
like this:
0070-0073 : 00:06 <-- PNP device 00:06 responds to 70-73
0070-0071 : rtc <-- RTC driver uses only 70-71
instead of the current:

When PCMCIA_DEBUG is set, cm40x0_cs.c and cm4000_cs.c don't build because the
definition of reader_to_dev uses a non-existent handle field of the struct
pcmcia_device in the call to handle_to_dev. As handle_to_dev works on struct
pcmcia_device, the fix is quite trivial.

All 32 bits machines but i386 dont have CONFIG_KTIME_SCALAR. On these
machines, ktime.tv64 is more than 4 times the (correct) result given
by ktime_to_ns()
Again on these machines, using ktime_get_real().tv64 >> 6 give a
32bits rollover every 64 seconds, which is not wanted (less than the
120 s MSL)
Using ktime_to_ns() is the portable way to get nsecs from a ktime, and
have correct code.

Dave Miller noted various cases where line disciplines for things like
ppp go poking around in termios themselves in ways that broke with the
new termios code. Rather than have them all learning about termios
internals provide proper methods for this
- tty_mode_ioctl()
This handles all the terminal mode handling for speed/carrier
etc and none of the methods are ldisc dependant so they can be called
by any user
- tty_perform_flush()
This extracts the flush functionality and enables pppd the ppp
layer to share it cleanly.
The existing n_tty_ioctl code is refactored in this patch to provide
the new functions and to call them itself appropriately. This patch
has no (intended) behaviour changes and simply prepares for the other
fixes.

This code relied on the CPU and GPU address for the aperture being the same,
On some r5xx hardware I was playing with I noticed that this isn't always true.

Make irq handling more efficient, by passing board pointer via
request_irq() to our irq handler's dev_id argument.
This eliminates a table lookup upon each interrupt, and eliminates an
associated global variable (the table).

Polling currently calls the irq handler, which loops through all the
boards, calling the work function for all polling boards with work.
irq handling loops through all the boards, finding the specific board
that applies to us, and calling the work just for that one board.
The two logics are sufficiently different to warrant different
functions, rather than being slack and calling the same function in two
different ways.
This serves to make the interrupt handler a -lot- more efficient.

ztxdone is jumped to even if tty is NULL and tty_wakeup placed after
this label doesn't expect NULLed parameter, so this will cause an oops
in some situations (why they scheduled a wakeup there before remove
bottom half processing patch?).

This is an hvc-based virtio console driver. It's suboptimal becuase
hvc expects to have raw access to interrupts and virtio doesn't assume
that, so it currently polls.
There are two solutions: expose hvc's "kick" interface, or wean off hvc.

The task_struct->pid member is going to be deprecated, so start
using the helpers (task_pid_nr/task_pid_vnr/task_pid_nr_ns) in
the kernel.
The first thing to start with is the pid, printed to dmesg - in
this case we may safely use task_pid_nr(). Besides, printks produce
more (much more) than a half of all the explicit pid usage.

get rid of input BIT* duplicate defines
use newly global defined macros for input layer. Also remove includes of
input.h from non-input sources only for BIT macro definiton. Define the
macro temporarily in local manner, all those local definitons will be
removed further in this patchset (to not break bisecting).

This is the largest patch in the set. Make all (I hope) the places where
the pid is shown to or get from user operate on the virtual pids.
The idea is:
- all in-kernel data structures must store either struct pid itself
or the pid's global nr, obtained with pid_nr() call;
- when seeking the task from kernel code with the stored id one
should use find_task_by_pid() call that works with global pids;
- when showing pid's numerical value to the user the virtual one
should be used, but however when one shows task's pid outside this
task's namespace the global one is to be used;
- when getting the pid from userspace one need to consider this as
the virtual one and use appropriate task/pid-searching functions.

is_init() is an ambiguous name for the pid==1 check. Split it into
is_global_init() and is_container_init().
A cgroup init has it's tsk->pid == 1.
A global init also has it's tsk->pid == 1 and it's active pid namespace
is the init_pid_ns. But rather than check the active pid namespace,
compare the task structure with 'init_pid_ns.child_reaper', which is
initialized during boot to the /sbin/init process and never changes.

- Use 'init_pid_ns.child_reaper' to determine if a given task is the
global init (/sbin/init) process. This would improve performance
and remove dependence on the task_pid().

The set of functions process_session, task_session, process_group and
task_pgrp is confusing, as the names can be mixed with each other when looking
at the code for a long time.
The proposals are to
* equip the functions that return the integer with _nr suffix to
represent that fact,
* and to make all functions work with task (not process) by making
the common prefix of the same name.
For monotony the routines signal_session() and set_signal_session() are
replaced with task_session_nr() and set_task_session(), especially since they
are only used with the explicit task->signal dereference.

Some blind people use a kernel engine called Speakup which uses hardware
synthesis to speak what gets displayed on the screen. They use the
PC keyboard to control this engine (start/stop, accelerate, ...) and
also need to get keyboard feedback (to make sure to know what they are
typing, the caps lock status, etc.)
Up to now, the way it was done was very ugly. Below is a patch to add a
notifier list for permitting a far better implementation, see ChangeLog
above for details.
You may wonder why this can't be done at the input layer. The problem
is that what people want to monitor is the console keyboard, i.e. all
input keyboards that got attached to the console, and with the currently
active keymap (i.e. keysyms, not only keycodes).
This adds a keyboard notifier that such modules can use to get the keyboard
events and possibly eat them, at several stages:
- keycodes: even before translation into keysym.
- unbound keycodes: when no keysym is bound.
- unicode: when the keycode would get translated into a unicode character.
- keysym: when the keycode would get translated into a keysym.
- post_keysym: after the keysym got interpreted, so as to see the result
(caps lock, etc.)
This also provides access to k_handler so as to permit simulation of
keypresses.

Convert over to the new NMI handling for getting IPMI watchdog timeouts via an
NMI. This add config options to know if there is the ability to receive NMIs
and if it has an NMI post processing call. Then it modifies the IPMI watchdog
to take advantage of this so that it can know if an NMI comes in.
It also adds testing that the IPMI NMI watchdog works.

Currently the IPMI watchdog timer sets the watchdog timeout on a panic, but it
doesn't actually poll the interface to make sure the message goes out.
Add an interface for polling the IPMI driver, and add code to the IPMI
watchdog timer to poll the interface when the timer is set from a panic.

Lockdep was giving an error when loading the IPMI watchdog module. It turns
out that if you try to claim a lock in a parameter handling routine, lockdep
won't see that lock as "static" yet because the module is not yet on the
module list, so it will complain.
However, the semaphore in question is completely unnecessary. So just remove
it.

Patrick found a race at startup. Interrupts were being enabled for the IPMI
interface before the driver was really ready to handle them. This could
result in an oops if something was pending on the interface at startup and
interrupt were already enabled (technically shouldn't happen, but need to
cover for this in real life). So move the IRQ setup to the code that starts
the actual IPMI processing.

The work done in bottom half doesn't cost much cpu time (e.g. tty_hangup
itself schedules its own bottom half), it's possible to do the work in isr
directly and save hence some .text.

Instead of having a bunch of ifdefs in sysctl.c move all of the pty sysctl
logic into drivers/char/pty.c
As well as cleaning up the logic this prevents sysctl_check_table from
complaining that the root table has a NULL data pointer on something with
generic methods.

Move the definition of 'struct pm_ops' and related functions from <linux/pm.h>
to <linux/suspend.h> .
There are, at least, the following reasons to do that:
* 'struct pm_ops' is specifically related to suspend and not to the power
management in general.
* As long as 'struct pm_ops' is defined in <linux/pm.h>, any modification of it
causes the entire kernel to be recompiled, which is unnecessary and annoying.
* Some suspend-related features are already defined in <linux/suspend.h>, so it
is logical to move the definition of 'struct pm_ops' into there.
* 'struct hibernation_ops', being the hibernation-related counterpart of
'struct pm_ops', is defined in <linux/suspend.h> .

The tty_termios_encode_baud_rate() function as defined by tty_ioctl.c has a
problem with the baud_table within. The comparison operators are reversed
and as a result this table's entries never match and BOTHER is always used.

Since default_utf8 is already a sysfs attribute, having an extra
CONFIG_VT_UNICODE compile-time option is redundant, since sysfs attributes can
be set at boot and run time.
Also let Linux VCs default to UTF-8 (as per the discussion at
http://lkml.org/lkml/2007/9/6/99).

Create an inline function for clflush(), with the proper arguments,
