ac88a8f3f7 PNP: remove old CONFIG_PNP_DEBUG option
CONFIG_PNP_DEBUG is no longer used to turn on dev_dbg() in PNP,
since we have pnp_dbg() which can be enabled at boot-time, so
this patch removes the config option.

Note that pnp_dock_event() checks "#ifdef DEBUG". But there's
never been a clear path for enabling that via configgery. It
happened that CONFIG_PNP_DEBUG enabled it after 1bd17e63a0,
but that was accidental and only in 2.6.26.

2f53432c2a PNP: convert to using pnp_dbg()
pnp_dbg() is equivalent to dev_dbg() except that we can turn it

2663f60d43 PNP: remove some uses of DEBUG ifdef
Use scnprintf() to build up a buffer of PNP IDs to print. This
makes the printk atomic and helps get rid of an #ifdef.

Also remove an "#ifdef DEBUG" from some debug functions. The
functions only produce debug output, so it's OK to run the
function and just have the output be dropped at the end.

ed458df4d2 PnP: move pnpacpi/pnpbios_init to after PCI init
We already did that a long time ago for pnp_system_init, but
pnpacpi_init and pnpbios_init remained as subsys_initcalls, and get
linked into the kernel before the arch-specific routines that finalize
the PCI resources (pci_subsys_init).

This means that the PnP routines would either register their resources
before the PCI layer could, or would be unable to check whether a PCI
resource had already been registered. Both are problematic.

I wanted to do this before 2.6.27, but every time we change something
like this, something breaks. That said, _every_ single time we trust
some firmware (like PnP tables) more than we trust the hardware itself
(like PCI probing), the problems have been worse.

de82ff783b PNPACPI: ignore the producer/consumer bit for extended IRQ descriptors
The Extended Interrupt descriptor has a producer/consumer bit, but
it's not clear what that would mean, and existing BIOSes use the bit
inconsistently. This patch makes Linux PNPACPI ignore the bit.

The ACPI spec contains examples of PCI Interrupt Link devices marked
as ResourceProducers, but many BIOSes mark them as ResourceConsumers.

I also checked with a Windows contact, who said:

Windows uses only "resource consumer" when dealing with
interrupts. There's no useful way of looking at a resource
    producer of interrupts.

... NT-based Windows largely infers the producer/consumer stuff
from the device type and ignores the bits in the namespace. This
was necessary because Windows 98 ignored them and early namespaces
    contained random junk.

The reason I want to change this is because if PNPACPI devices exclude
ResourceProducer IRQ resources, we can't write PNP drivers for those
devices.

For example, on machines such as the the HP rx7620, rx7640, rx8620,
rx8640, and Superdome, HPET interrupts are ResourceProducers. The
HPET driver currently has to use acpi_bus_register_driver() and do its
own _CRS parsing, even though it requires absolutely no ACPI-specific
functionality.

It would be better if the HPET driver were a PNP driver and took
advantage of the _CRS parsing built into PNPACPI.

This producer/consumer check was originally added here:
    http://git.kernel.org/?p=linux/kernel/git/torvalds/linux-2.6.git;a=commitdiff;h=2b8de5f50e4a302b83ebcd5b0120621336d50bd6

to fix this bug:
    http://bugzilla.kernel.org/show_bug.cgi?id=6292

However, the bug was related only to memory and I/O port resources,
where the distinction is sensible and important to Linux. Given that
the distinction is muddled for IRQ resources, I think it was a mistake
to add the check there.

ea44c1d60d PNP: fix formatting of dbg_pnp_show_resources() output
Each resource should be printed on its own line, so start snprintf'ing
at the beginning of the buffer every time through the loop.

Also, use scnprintf() rather than snprintf() when building up the
buffer to print. scnprintf() returns the number of characters actually
written into the buffer (not including the trailing NULL).

snprintf() returns the number of characters that *would be* written,
assuming everything would fit in the buffer. That's nice if we want to
resize the buffer to make sure everything fits, but in this case, I
just want to keep from overflowing the buffer, and it's OK if the
output is truncated.

Using snprintf() meant that my "len" could grow to be more than the
the buffer size, which makes "sizeof(buf) - len" negative, which causes
this alarming WARN_ON:

999ed65ad1 pnp: have quirk_system_pci_resources() include io resources
quirk_system_pci_resources() disables a PnP mem resource that overlaps a
PCI BAR so as to not keep the PCI driver from claiming the resource. Have
it do the same for io resources.

Here, ACPI claims ports that overlap with my soundcard causing the
soundcard driver to fail to load. It's unknown why my ACPI BIOS claims
those ports; it did not use to but this is not a (kernel) regression.
Some odd BIOS reconfig triggered by temporarily removing the card seems to

e86b19ce64 pnp: set the pnp_card dma_mask for use by ISAPnP cards
dma_alloc_coherent() on x86 currently takes a passed in NULL device
pointer to mean that it should allocate an ISA compatible (24-bit) buffer
which is a bit of a hack.

The ALSA ISA drivers are the main consumers of this but have a struct
device in fact readily available.

For the PnP drivers, the specific pnp_dev->dev device pointer is not
always available at the right time so for now we want to pass the
pnp_card->dev instead which is always available. Set its dma_mask in
preparation for doing so.

This does not fix a current bug -- 2.6.26-rc1 stumbled over the NULL hack
in dma_alloc_coherent() but this has already been fixed in commit

40ab4f4c1d PNPACPI: add support for HP vendor-specific CCSR descriptors
The HP CCSR descriptor describes MMIO address space that should appear
as a MEM resource. This patch adds support for parsing these descriptors
in the _CRS data.

The visible effect of this is that these MEM resources will appear
in /sys/devices/pnp0/.../resources, which means that "lspnp -v" will
report it, user applications can use this to locate device CSR space,
and kernel drivers can use the normal PNP resource accessors to
locate them.

1f32ca31e7 PNP: convert resource options to single linked list
ISAPNP, PNPBIOS, and ACPI describe the "possible resource settings" of
a device, i.e., the possibilities an OS bus driver has when it assigns
I/O port, MMIO, and other resources to the device.

PNP used to maintain this "possible resource setting" information in
one independent option structure and a list of dependent option
structures for each device. Each of these option structures had lists
of I/O, memory, IRQ, and DMA resources, for example:

  dev
    independent options
      ind-io0  -> ind-io1  ...
      ind-mem0 -> ind-mem1 ...
      ...
    dependent option set 0
      dep0-io0  -> dep0-io1  ...
      dep0-mem0 -> dep0-mem1 ...
      ...
    dependent option set 1
      dep1-io0  -> dep1-io1  ...
      dep1-mem0 -> dep1-mem1 ...
      ...
    ...

This data structure was designed for ISAPNP, where the OS configures
device resource settings by writing directly to configuration
registers. The OS can write the registers in arbitrary order much
like it writes PCI BARs.

However, for PNPBIOS and ACPI devices, the OS uses firmware interfaces
that perform device configuration, and it is important to pass the
desired settings to those interfaces in the correct order. The OS
learns the correct order by using firmware interfaces that return the
"current resource settings" and "possible resource settings," but the
option structures above doesn't store the ordering information.

This patch replaces the independent and dependent lists with a single
list of options. For example, a device might have possible resource
settings like this:

  dev
    options
      ind-io0 -> dep0-io0 -> dep1->io0 -> ind-io1 ...

All the possible settings are in the same list, in the order they
come from the firmware "possible resource settings" list. Each entry
is tagged with an independent/dependent flag. Dependent entries also
have a "set number" and an optional priority value. All dependent
entries must be assigned from the same set. For example, the OS can
use all the entries from dependent set 0, or all the entries from
dependent set 1, but it cannot mix entries from set 0 with entries
from set 1.

Prior to this patch PNP didn't keep track of the order of this list,
and it assigned all independent options first, then all dependent
ones. Using the example above, that resulted in a "desired
configuration" list like this:

  ind->io0 -> ind->io1 -> depN-io0 ...

instead of the list the firmware expects, which looks like this:

  ind->io0 -> depN-io0 -> ind-io1 ...

bbe413b4fc ISAPNP: handle independent options following dependent ones
The ISAPNP spec recommends that independent options precede
dependent ones, but this is not actually required. The current
ISAPNP code incorrectly puts such trailing independent options
at the end of the last dependent option list.

This patch fixes that bug by resetting the current option list
to the independent list when we see an "End Dependent Functions"
tag. PNPBIOS and PNPACPI handle this the same way.

d5ebde6ef5 PNP: support optional IRQ resources
This patch adds an IORESOURCE_IRQ_OPTIONAL flag for use when
assigning resources to a device. If the flag is set and we are
unable to assign an IRQ to the device, we can leave the IRQ
disabled but allow the overall resource allocation to succeed.

Some devices request an IRQ, but can run without an IRQ
(possibly with degraded performance). This flag lets us run
the device without the IRQ instead of just leaving the
device disabled.

This is a reimplementation of this previous change by Rene
Herman <rene.herman@gmail.com>:
    http://git.kernel.org/?p=linux/kernel/git/torvalds/linux-2.6.git;a=commit;h=3b73a223661ed137c5d3d2635f954382e94f5a43

I reimplemented this for two reasons:
    - to prepare for converting all resource options into a single linked
list, as opposed to the per-resource-type lists we have now, and
    - to preserve the order and number of resource options.

In PNPBIOS and ACPI, we configure a device by giving firmware a
list of resource assignments. It is important that this list
has exactly the same number of resources, in the same order,
as the "template" list we got from the firmware in the first
place.

The problem of a sound card MPU401 being left disabled for want of
an IRQ was reported by Uwe Bugla <uwe.bugla@gmx.de>.

fe2cf598e6 PNPACPI: ignore _PRS interrupt numbers larger than PNP_IRQ_NR
ACPI Extended Interrupt Descriptors can encode 32-bit interrupt
numbers, so an interrupt number may exceed the size of the bitmap
we use to track possible IRQ settings.

To avoid corrupting memory, complain and ignore too-large interrupt
numbers.

There's similar code in pnpacpi_parse_irq_option(), but I didn't
change that because the small IRQ descriptor can only encode
IRQs 0-15, which do not exceed bitmap size.

In the future, we could handle IRQ numbers greater than PNP_IRQ_NR

57fd51a8be PNP: add pnp_possible_config() -- can a device could be configured this way?
As part of a heuristic to identify modem devices, 8250_pnp.c
checks to see whether a device can be configured at any of the
legacy COM port addresses.

This patch moves the code that traverses the PNP "possible resource
options" from 8250_pnp.c to the PNP subsystem. This encapsulation
is important because a future patch will change the implementation
of those resource options.

f61ed7e32d PNP: dont sort by type in /sys/.../resources
Rather than stepping through all IO resources, then stepping through
all MMIO resources, etc., we can just iterate over the resource list
once directly.

This can change the order in /sys, e.g.,

    # cat /sys/devices/pnp0/00:07/resources # OLD
    state = active
    io 0x3f8-0x3ff
    irq 4

    # cat /sys/devices/pnp0/00:07/resources # NEW
    state = active
    irq 4
    io 0x3f8-0x3ff

The old code artificially sorted resources by type; the new code
just lists them in the order we read them from the ISAPNP hardware
or the BIOS.

25d39c39d8 PNP: remove ratelimit on add resource failures
We used to have a fixed-size resource table. If a device had
twenty resources when the table only had space for ten, we didn't
need ten warnings, so we added the ratelimit.

Now that we can dynamically allocate new resources, we should
only get failures if the allocation fails. That should be
rare enough that we don't need to ratelimit the messages.

5acf914157 PNPACPI: keep disabled resources when parsing current config
When we parse a device's _CRS data (the current resource settings),
we should keep track of everything we find, even if it's currently
disabled or invalid.

This is what we already do for ISAPNP and PNPBIOS, and it helps
keep things matched up when we subsequently re-encode resources.
For example, consider a device with (mem, irq0, irq1, io), where
irq0 is disabled. If we drop irq0 when parsing the _CRS, we will
mistakenly put irq1 in the irq0 slot when we encode resources
for an _SRS call.

aee3ad815d PNP: replace pnp_resource_table with dynamically allocated resources
PNP used to have a fixed-size pnp_resource_table for tracking the
resources used by a device. This table often overflowed, so we've
had to increase the table size, which wastes memory because most
devices have very few resources.

This patch replaces the table with a linked list of resources where
the entries are allocated on demand.

This removes messages like these:

pnpacpi: exceeded the max number of IO resources
00:01: too many I/O port resources

References:

    http://bugzilla.kernel.org/show_bug.cgi?id=9535
    http://bugzilla.kernel.org/show_bug.cgi?id=9740
    http://lkml.org/lkml/2007/11/30/110

This patch also changes the way PNP uses the IORESOURCE_UNSET,
IORESOURCE_AUTO, and IORESOURCE_DISABLED flags.

Prior to this patch, the pnp_resource_table entries used the flags
like this:

    IORESOURCE_UNSET
This table entry is unused and available for use. When this flag
is set, we shouldn't look at anything else in the resource structure.
This flag is set when a resource table entry is initialized.

    IORESOURCE_AUTO
This resource was assigned automatically by pnp_assign_{io,mem,etc}().

This flag is set when a resource table entry is initialized and
cleared whenever we discover a resource setting by reading an ISAPNP
config register, parsing a PNPBIOS resource data stream, parsing an
ACPI _CRS list, or interpreting a sysfs "set" command.

Resources marked IORESOURCE_AUTO are reinitialized and marked as
IORESOURCE_UNSET by pnp_clean_resource_table() in these cases:

	    - before we attempt to assign resources automatically,
	    - if we fail to assign resources automatically,
	    - after disabling a device

    IORESOURCE_DISABLED
Set by pnp_assign_{io,mem,etc}() when automatic assignment fails.
Also set by PNPBIOS and PNPACPI for:

	    - invalid IRQs or GSI registration failures
	    - invalid DMA channels
	    - I/O ports above 0x10000
	    - mem ranges with negative length

After this patch, there is no pnp_resource_table, and the resource list
entries use the flags like this:

    IORESOURCE_UNSET
This flag is no longer used in PNP. Instead of keeping
IORESOURCE_UNSET entries in the resource list, we remove
entries from the list and free them.

    IORESOURCE_AUTO
No change in meaning: it still means the resource was assigned
automatically by pnp_assign_{port,mem,etc}(), but these functions
	now set the bit explicitly.

We still "clean" a device's resource list in the same places,
but rather than reinitializing IORESOURCE_AUTO entries, we
just remove them from the list.

Note that IORESOURCE_AUTO entries are always at the end of the
list, so removing them doesn't reorder other list entries.
This is because non-IORESOURCE_AUTO entries are added by the
ISAPNP, PNPBIOS, or PNPACPI "get resources" methods and by the
sysfs "set" command. In each of these cases, we completely free
	the resource list first.

    IORESOURCE_DISABLED
In addition to the cases where we used to set this flag, ISAPNP now
adds an IORESOURCE_DISABLED resource when it reads a configuration
	register with a "disabled" value.

87e4acf3eb PNP: remove pnp_resource.index
We used pnp_resource.index to keep track of which ISAPNP configuration
register a resource should be written to. We needed this only to
handle the case where a register is disabled but a subsequent register

Rather than explicitly maintaining the pnp_resource.index, this patch
adds a resource every time we read an ISAPNP configuration register
and marks the resource as IORESOURCE_DISABLED when appropriate. This
makes the position in the pnp_resource_table always correspond to the

36d872a370 PNPACPI: use _CRS IRQ descriptor length for _SRS
When configuring the resources of an ACPI device, we first evaluate _CRS
to get a template of resource descriptors, then fill in the specific
resource values we want, and finally evaluate _SRS to actually configure
the device.

Some resources have optional fields, so the size of encoded descriptors
varies depending on the specific values. For example, IRQ descriptors can
be either two or three bytes long. The third byte contains triggering
information and can be omitted if the IRQ is edge-triggered and active
high.

The BIOS often assumes that IRQ descriptors in the _SRS buffer use the
same format as those in the _CRS buffer, so this patch enforces that
constraint.

The "Start Dependent Function" descriptor also has an optional byte, but
we don't currently encode those descriptors, so I didn't do anything for
those.

I have tested this patch on a Toshiba Portege 4000. Without the patch,
parport_pc claims the parallel port only if I use "pnpacpi=off". This
patch makes it work with PNPACPI.

3b73a22366 pnp: add ISAPnP MPU option quirks
The AD181x and AZT230 chips don't support an IRQ-less MPU401 option but
work fine without one. This adds (priority functional) IRQ-less options
for each port option to help systems with few available IRQs.

The AD1815 quirk can't use pnp_register_irq_resource() due to doubly
penalizing the IRQ. Also, while not a practical issue due to no IRQ
option being present for the dependents, this needs to add in front, not
back.

Doesn't use pnp_register_port_resource() for symetry with above.

This does not delete the AD1815 independent option even though it should
be empty after the IRQ transfer due to AD1816 coming with an empty but
still present independent option by default.

Was tested on AD1815, AD1816 and AZT2320. The ALSA snd-ad1818a driver
also support the AZT2002 ID for MPU401 but this doesn't as I was unable to

dfd2e1b4e6 PNPBIOS: remove include/linux/pnpbios.h
The contents of include/linux/pnpbios.h are used only inside the PNPBIOS

This patch moves the contents into an existing PNPBIOS-specific file,

21855d69d1 PNP: add pnp_resource index for ISAPNP
Save the ISAPNP config register index in the struct pnp_resource.

We need this because it is important to write ISAPNP configuration
back to the same registers we read it from. For example, if we
read valid regions from memory descriptors 0, 1, and 3, we'd
better write them back to the same registers, without compressing
them to descriptors 0, 1, and 2.

This was previously guaranteed by using the index into the
pnp_resource_table array as the ISAPNP config register index.
However, I am removing those fixed-size arrays, so we need to
save the ISAPNP register index elsewhere.

db9eaeab3e PNP: check for conflicts with all resources, not just earlier ones
This patch removes a use of "idx" in pnp_check_port() and similar
functions, in preparation for replacing idx with a pointer to the

I split this out because it changes the behavior slightly: we used
to check for conflicts only with earlier resources, e.g., we checked
resource 2 against resources 0 and 1 but not against 3, 4, etc. Now
we will check against all resources except 2.

Since resources are assigned in ascending order, the old behavior
was probably safe, but I don't like to depend on that ordering.

2cd1393098 PNP: remove unused interfaces using pnp_resource_table

driver uses of:

    pnp_init_resource_table()
    pnp_manual_config_dev()
    pnp_resource_change()

in this change:

    http://git.kernel.org/?p=linux/kernel/git/torvalds/linux-2.6.git;a=commitdiff;h=109c53f840e551d6e99ecfd8b0131a968332c89f

These are no longer used in the PNP core either, so we can just remove
them completely.

It's possible that there are out-of-tree drivers that use these
interfaces. They should be changed to either (1) use PNP quirks
to work around broken hardware or firmware, or (2) use the sysfs
interfaces to control resource usage from userspace.

0093cb1199 pnpacpi: fix potential corruption on "pnpacpi: exceeded the max number of IRQ resources 2"
PNP_MAX_IRQ is 2
If a device invokes pnpacpi_parse_allocated_irqresource() 0, 1, or 2 times, we are happy.
The 3rd time, we will fail and print "pnpacpi: exceeded the max number of IRQ resources: 2"
The 4th and subsequent calls (if this ever happened) would silently scribble on
irq_resource[2], which doesn't actualy exist.

33fd7afd66 pnpacpi: reduce printk severity for "pnpacpi: exceeded the max number of ..."
We have been printing these messages at KERN_ERR since 2.6.24,
per http://bugzilla.kernel.org/show_bug.cgi?id=9535

But KERN_ERR pops up on a console booted with "quiet"
and causes users to get alarmed and file bugs
about the message itself:
https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=436589

So reduce the severity of these messages to
KERN_WARNING, which is not printed by "quiet".

This message will still be seen without "quiet",
but a lot of messages are printed in that mode
and it will be less likely to cause undue alarm.

We could go all the way to KERN_DEBUG, but this
is a real warning after all, so it seems prudent
not to require "debug" to see it.

245073f0b3 ISAPNP: fix limits of logical device register set
PNP_MAX_MEM and PNP_MAX_PORT are mainly used to size tables of PNP
device resources. In 2.6.24, we increased their values to accomodate
ACPI devices that have many resources:

                 2.6.23 2.6.24
                 ------ ------
  PNP_MAX_MEM 4 12
  PNP_MAX_PORT 8 40

However, ISAPNP also used these constants as the size of parts of the
logical device register set. This register set is fixed by hardware,
so increasing the constants meant that we were reading and writing
unintended parts of the register set.

This patch changes ISAPNP to use the correct register set sizes (the
same values we used prior to 2.6.24).

0509ad5e1a PNP: disable PNP motherboard resources that overlap PCI BARs
Some BIOSes have PNP motherboard devices with resources that
partially overlap PCI BARs. The PNP system driver claims these
motherboard resources, which prevents the normal PCI driver from
requesting them later.

This patch disables the PNP resources that conflict with PCI BARs
so they won't be claimed by the PNP system driver.

Of course, this only works if PCI devices have already been enumerated.
Currently this is the case because PCI devices are discovered before
any PNP init via this path:

    acpi_pci_root_init() -> acpi_pci_root_add() -> pci_acpi_scan_root() ->
	pci_scan_bus_parented() -> pci_scan_child_bus() -> ...

Avuton Olrich tested this and confirmed that it fixes his ALSA sound
card (see http://lkml.org/lkml/2008/1/27/168).

445a1d3e24 PNP: disable Supermicro H8DCE motherboard resources that overlap SATA BARs
Some Supermicro BIOSes describe a SATA PCI BAR as a motherboard resource.
The PNP system driver claims motherboard resources, and this prevents the
sata_nv driver from requesting it later.

This patch disables the PNP0C01/PNP0C02 resources so they won't be claimed

This fixes the bugs below, where sata_nv detects only two out of four SATA

5d38998ed1 PNP: do not test PNP_DRIVER_RES_DO_NOT_CHANGE on suspend/resume
The PNP_DRIVER_RES_DO_NOT_CHANGE flag is meant to signify that the PNP core
should not change resources for the device -- not that it shouldn't
disable/enable the device on suspend/resume.

ALSA ISAPnP drivers set PNP_DRIVER_RES_DO_NOT_CHANAGE (0x0001) through
setting PNP_DRIVER_RES_DISABLE (0x0003). The latter including the former
may in itself be considered rather unexpected but doesn't change that
suspend/resume wouldn't seem to have any business testing the flag.

As reported by Ondrej Zary for snd-cs4236, ALSA driven ISAPnP cards don't
survive swsusp hibernation with the resume skipping setting the resources
due to testing the flag -- the same test in the suspend path isn't enough
to keep hibernation from disabling the card it seems.

These tests were added (in 2005) by Piere Ossman in commit
68094e3251, "alsa: Improved PnP suspend
support" who doesn't remember why. This deletes them.

2bb9a6b32f pnp: declare PNP option parsing functions as __init
There are three kind of parse functions provided by PNP acpi/bios:
 - get current resources
 - set resources
 - get possible resources
The first two may be needed later at runtime.
The possible resource settings should never change dynamically.
And even if this would make any sense (I doubt it), the current implementation
only parses possible resource settings at early init time:
-> declare all the option parsing __init

cc8259a666 simplify pnp_activate_dev() and pnp_disable_dev() return values
Make pnp_activate_dev() and pnp_disable_dev() return only 0 (success) or a

Previously they returned:

0:	device was already active (or disabled)
1:	we just activated (or disabled) device
<0:	-EBUSY or error from pnp_start_dev() (or pnp_stop_dev())

Now we return only 0 (device is active or disabled) or <0 (error).

7ef36390fa PNP: don't fail device init if no DMA channel available
Most drivers for devices supporting ISA DMA can operate without DMA as well
(falling back zo PIO). Thus it seems inappropriate for PNP to fail device
initialization in case none of the possible DMA channels are available.
Instead, it should be left to the driver to decide what to do if
request_dma() fails.

The patch at once adjusts the code to account for the fact that
pnp_assign_dma() now doesn't need to report failure anymore.

1855256c49 drivers/firmware: const-ify DMI API and internals
Three main sets of changes:

1) dmi_get_system_info() return value should have been marked const,
since callers should not be changing that data.

2) const-ify DMI internals, since DMI firmware tables should,
whenever possible, be marked const to ensure we never ever write to
   that data area.

3) const-ify DMI API, to enable marking tables const where possible
   in low-level drivers.

And if we're really lucky, this might enable some additional
optimizations on the part of the compiler.

The bulk of the changes are #2 and #3, which are interrelated. #1 could
have been a separate patch, but it was so small compared to the others,
it was easier to roll it into this changeset.

8314418629 Freezer: make kernel threads nonfreezable by default
Currently, the freezer treats all tasks as freezable, except for the kernel
threads that explicitly set the PF_NOFREEZE flag for themselves. This
approach is problematic, since it requires every kernel thread to either
set PF_NOFREEZE explicitly, or call try_to_freeze(), even if it doesn't
care for the freezing of tasks at all.

It seems better to only require the kernel threads that want to or need to
be frozen to use some freezer-related code and to remove any
freezer-related code from the other (nonfreezable) kernel threads, which is
done in this patch.

The patch causes all kernel threads to be nonfreezable by default (ie. to
have PF_NOFREEZE set by default) and introduces the set_freezable()
function that should be called by the freezable kernel threads in order to
unset PF_NOFREEZE. It also makes all of the currently freezable kernel
threads call set_freezable(), so it shouldn't cause any (intentional)
change of behaviour to appear. Additionally, it updates documentation to
describe the freezing of tasks more accurately.

b2111217df isapnp: remove pointless check of 'type' against 0 in isapnp_read_tag()
In drivers/pnp/isapnp/core.c::isapnp_read_tag() there is a test of 'type'
being == 0 a bit down in the function. That test doesn't make any sense.
If 'type' could indeed be NULL, then the test happens way too late as we'd
already have tried to dereference the pointer earlier and looking at the
callers it also turns out that there is no way type can ever actually be
NULL.

So the test is completely pointless and should just be removed.

41a5311465 PNP SMCf010 quirk: work around Toshiba Portege 4000 ACPI issues
When we enable the SMCf010 IR device, the Toshiba Portege 4000 BIOS claims
the device is working, but it really isn't configured correctly. The BIOS
*will* configure it, but only if we call _SRS after (1) reversing the order
of the SIR and FIR I/O port regions and (2) changing the IRQ from
active-high to active-low.

This patch addresses the 2.6.22 regression:
"no irda0 interface (2.6.21 was OK), smsc does not find chip"

I tested this on a Portege 4000. The smsc-ircc2 driver correctly detects
the device, and "irattach irda0 -s && irdadump" shows transmitted and
received packets.

172d0496cd PNP SMCf010 quirk: auto-config device if BIOS left it broken
Some HP firmware leaves the SMCf010 IRDA device incompletely configured, or
reports the wrong resources in _CRS. As a workaround, when we find such a
device, try to auto-configure the device.

This ignores the _CRS data, picks a config from _PRS, and runs _SRS to
configure the device. This makes smsc-ircc2 work correctly with PNP
resources (with no preconfiguration!) on all the machines I tested.

I think Windows does something like this by default for all devices,
so we should consider doing the same thing in Linux.

This patch addresses part of the 2.6.22 regression:
"no irda0 interface (2.6.21 was OK), smsc does not find chip"
It fixes smsc-ircc2 PNP device detection on HP nc6000, nc6220, nw8000,

8f81dd1498 PNP: notice whether we have PNP devices (PNPBIOS or PNPACPI)
This series converts i386 and x86_64 legacy serial ports to be platform
devices and prevents probing for them if we have PNP.

This prevents double discovery, where a device was found both by the legacy
probe and by 8250_pnp.

This also prevents the serial driver from claiming IRDA devices (unless they
have a UART PNP ID). The serial legacy probe sometimes assumed the wrong IRQ,
so the user had to use "setserial" to fix it.

Removing the need for setserial to make IRDA devices work seems good, but it
does break some things. In particular, you may need to keep setserial from
poking legacy UART stuff back in by doing something like "dpkg-reconfigure
setserial" with the "kernel" option. Otherwise, the setserial-discovered
"UART" will claim resources and prevent the IRDA driver from loading.

This patch:

If we can discover devices using PNP, we can skip some legacy probes. This
flag ("pnp_platform_devices") indicates that PNPBIOS or PNPACPI is enabled and
should tell us about builtin devices.

55955aad7c PNPACPI sets pnpdev->dev.archdata
Teach PNPACPI how to hook up its devices to their ACPI nodes, so that
pnpdev->dev.archdata points to the parallel acpi device node. Previously
this only worked for PCI, leaving a notable hole.

Export "acpi_bus_type" so this can work.

Remove some extraneous whitespace.

2e17c5508f init dma masks in pnp_dev
PNP now initializes device dma masks, which prevents oopses when generic
dma calls are made using pnp device nodes.

This assumes PNP only uses ISA DMA, with 24 bit addresses; and that it's
safe to init those masks for all devices (rather than finding out which
devices have been assigned DMA channels, and handling only those).

cbcdc1debd [PATCH] PNP: export pnp_bus_type
The PNP framework doesn't export "pnp_bus_type", which is an unfortunate
exception to the policy followed by pretty much every other bus. I noticed
this when I had to find a device in order to provide its platform_data.

Note that per advice from Arjan, the "export" scope has been been minimized to
avoid the hundred-plus bytes needed to support access from modules. In this
case, the symbol is only needed by statically linked kernel code that lives
outside the drivers/pnp directory.

ccc4c7bbd6 Fix DMA resource allocation in ACPIPnP
The ACPIPnP implementation had the understanding of Linux resource flags very
wrong, resulting in a nonfunctional implementation of DMA resource
allocation.

This was usually not a problem, since almost no on-board PnP devices use ISA
DMA, with the exception of ECP parallel ports. Even with that, parallel port
DMA is preconfigured by the BIOS, so this routine isn't normally called.

Except in the case where somebody does 'rmmod parport_pc; modprobe
parport_pc', where the rmmod case disables the ECP parallel port resources,
and they need to be enabled again to initialize the module. This didn't
work, resulting in a non-printing printer.

The application doing exactly the above to force reprobing of printers is
the YaST printer module. Thus without this fix YaST wedged the printer when
configuring it, and was not able to print a test page.

7d12e780e0 IRQ: Maintain regs pointer globally rather than passing to IRQ handlers
Maintain a per-CPU global "struct pt_regs *" variable which can be used instead
of passing regs around manually through all ~1800 interrupt handlers in the
Linux kernel.

The regs pointer is used in few places, but it potentially costs both stack
space and code to pass it around. On the FRV arch, removing the regs parameter
from all the genirq function results in a 20% speed up of the IRQ exit path
(ie: from leaving timer_interrupt() to leaving do_IRQ()).

Where appropriate, an arch may override the generic storage facility and do
something different with the variable. On FRV, for instance, the address is
maintained in GR28 at all times inside the kernel as part of general exception
handling.

Having looked over the code, it appears that the parameter may be handed down
through up to twenty or so layers of functions. Consider a USB character
device attached to a USB hub, attached to a USB controller that posts its
interrupts through a cascaded auxiliary interrupt controller. A character
device driver may want to pass regs to the sysrq handler through the input
layer which adds another few layers of parameter passing.

I've build this code with allyesconfig for x86_64 and i386. I've runtested the
main part of the code on FRV and i386, though I can't test most of the drivers.
I've also done partial conversion for powerpc and MIPS - these at least compile
with minimal configurations.

This will affect all archs. Mostly the changes should be relatively easy.
Take do_IRQ(), store the regs pointer at the beginning, saving the old one:

	struct pt_regs *old_regs = set_irq_regs(regs);

And put the old one back at the end:

	set_irq_regs(old_regs);

Don't pass regs through to generic_handle_irq() or __do_IRQ().

In timer_interrupt(), this sort of change will be necessary:

	-	update_process_times(user_mode(regs));
	-	profile_tick(CPU_PROFILING, regs);
	+	update_process_times(user_mode(get_irq_regs()));
	+	profile_tick(CPU_PROFILING);

I'd like to move update_process_times()'s use of get_irq_regs() into itself,
except that i386, alone of the archs, uses something other than user_mode().

Some notes on the interrupt handling in the drivers:

(*) input_dev() is now gone entirely. The regs pointer is no longer stored in
     the input_dev struct.

(*) finish_unlinks() in drivers/usb/host/ohci-q.c needs checking. It does
something different depending on whether it's been supplied with a regs
     pointer or not.

(*) Various IRQ handler function pointers have been moved to type
     irq_handler_t.

30cbc22217 [PATCH] update legacy io handling for pmac
ppc can boot one single binary on prep, chrp and pmac boards. ppc64 can
boot one single binary on pseries and G5 boards. pmac has no legacy io,
probing for PC style legacy hardware (or accessing the legacy io area
regulary) may lead to a hard crash:

* add check for parport_pc, exit on pmac. 32bit chrp has no
->check_legacy_ioport, the probe is always called. 64bit chrp has
check_legacy_ioport, check for a "parallel" node

* add check for isapnp, only PReP boards may have real ISA slots. 32bit
PReP will have no ->check_legacy_ioport, the probe is always called.

always call request_region. No functional change. Remove whitespace

2b8de5f50e [PATCH] pnpacpi: reject ACPI_PRODUCER resources
A patch in -mm kernel correct the parsing of "address resources" of pnpacpi.
Before we assumed it was memory only, but it could be also IO.

But this change show an hidden bug : some resources could be producer type
that are not handled by pnp layer. So we should ignore the producer
resources.

This patch fixes bug 6292 (http://bugzilla.kernel.org/show_bug.cgi?id=6292).
Some devices like PNP0A03 have 0xd00-0xffff and 0x0-0xcf7 as IO producer
resources.

Before correcting "address resources" parsing, it was seen as memory and was
harmless, because nobody tried to reserve this memory range as it should be
IO.

With the correction it become IO resources, and make failed all others device
that want to register IO in this range and use pnp layer (like a ISA sound
card).

The solution is to ignore producer resources

3ae192080c [PATCH] Fix swsusp with PNP BIOS
swsusp is unable to suspend my machine (DTK FortisPro TOP-5A notebook) with
kernel 2.6.17.5 because it's unable to suspend PNP device 00:16 (mouse).

The problem is in PNP BIOS. pnp_bus_suspend() calls pnp_stop_dev() for the
device if the device can be disabled according to pnp_can_disable(). The
problem is that pnpbios_disable_resources() returns -EPERM if the device is
not dynamic (!pnpbios_is_dynamic()) but insert_device() happily sets
PNP_DISABLE capability/flag even if the device is not dynamic. So we try
to disable non-dynamic devices which will fail. This patch prevents
insert_device() from setting PNP_DISABLE if the device is not dynamic and
fixes suspend on my system.

1acfb7f2b0 PNPACPI: fix non-memory address space descriptor handling
Fix resource_type handling for QWORD, DWORD, and WORD Address Space
Descriptors. Previously we ignored the resource_type, so I/O ports and bus
number ranges were incorrectly parsed as memory ranges.

Sample PCI root bridge resources from HP rx2600 before this patch:

    # cat /sys/bus/pnp/devices/00:02/resources
    state = active
    mem 0x0-0x1f
    mem 0x0-0x3af
    mem 0x3e0-0x1fff
    mem 0x80000000-0x8fffffff

With this patch:

    # cat /sys/bus/pnp/devices/00:02/resources
    state = active
    io 0x0-0x3af
    io 0x3e0-0x1fff
    mem 0x80000000-0x8fffffff
    mem 0x80004000000-0x80103fffffe

Changes:
0x0-0x1f PCI bus number range was incorrectly reported as memory, now
	not reported at all
0x0-0x3af I/O port range was incorrectly reported as memory
0x3e0-0x1fff I/O port range was incorrectly reported as memory
0x80004000000-0x80103fffffe memory range wasn't reported at all because
we only support PNP_MAX_MEM (4) memory resources

6f957eaf79 [ACPI] enable PNPACPI support for resource types used by HP serial ports
PNPACPI complained about and ignored devices with ADDRESS16, ADDRESS32, or

ports, so this patch adds support for parsing these descriptors from _PRS.

Note that this does not add the corresponding support for encoding them in
preparation for _SRS, because I don't have any machine that supports _SRS
on these descriptors, so I couldn't test that support. Attempts to encode
them will cause a warning and an -EINVAL return.

PnP BIOS data, code, and 32-bit entry segments all have fixed limits as well;

5fe9fe3c6f [PATCH] x86: Pnp byte granularity
The one remaining caller of set_limit, the PnP BIOS code, calls into the PnP
BIOS, passing kernel parameters in and out. These parameteres may be passed
from arbitrary kernel virtual memory, so they deserve strict protection to
stop a bad BIOS from smashing beyond the object size.

Unfortunately, the use of set_limit was badly botching this by setting the
limit in terms of pages, when it really should have byte granularity.

When doing this, I discovered my BIOS had the buggy code during the "get
system device node" call:

 mov ax, es:[bx]

Which is harmless, but has a trivial workaround.

0897831bb5 [ACPI] ACPICA 20051021
Implemented support for the EM64T and other x86_64
processors. This essentially entails recognizing
that these processors support non-aligned memory
transfers. Previously, all 64-bit processors were assumed
to lack hardware support for non-aligned transfers.

Completed conversion of the Resource Manager to nearly
full table-driven operation. Specifically, the resource
conversion code (convert AML to internal format and the
reverse) and the debug code to dump internal resource
descriptors are fully table-driven, reducing code and data
size and improving maintainability.

The OSL interfaces for Acquire and Release Lock now use a
64-bit flag word on 64-bit processors instead of a fixed
32-bit word. (Alexey Starikovskiy)

Implemented support within the resource conversion code
for the Type-Specific byte within the various ACPI 3.0
*WordSpace macros.

Fixed some issues within the resource conversion code for
the type-specific flags for both Memory and I/O address
resource descriptors. For Memory, implemented support
for the MTP and TTP flags. For I/O, split the TRS and TTP
flags into two separate fields.

50eca3eb89 [ACPI] ACPICA 20050930
Completed a major overhaul of the Resource Manager code -
specifically, optimizations in the area of the AML/internal
resource conversion code. The code has been optimized to
simplify and eliminate duplicated code, CPU stack use has
been decreased by optimizing function parameters and local
variables, and naming conventions across the manager have
been standardized for clarity and ease of maintenance (this
includes function, parameter, variable, and struct/typedef
names.)

All Resource Manager dispatch and information tables have
been moved to a single location for clarity and ease of
maintenance. One new file was created, named "rsinfo.c".

The ACPI return macros (return_ACPI_STATUS, etc.) have
been modified to guarantee that the argument is
not evaluated twice, making them less prone to macro
side-effects. However, since there exists the possibility
of additional stack use if a particular compiler cannot
optimize them (such as in the debug generation case),
the original macros are optionally available. Note that
some invocations of the return_VALUE macro may now cause
size mismatch warnings; the return_UINT8 and return_UINT32
macros are provided to eliminate these. (From Randy Dunlap)

Implemented a new mechanism to enable debug tracing for
individual control methods. A new external interface,
acpi_debug_trace(), is provided to enable this mechanism. The
intent is to allow the host OS to easily enable and disable
tracing for problematic control methods. This interface
can be easily exposed to a user or debugger interface if
desired. See the file psxface.c for details.

acpi_ut_callocate() will now return a valid pointer if a
length of zero is specified - a length of one is used
and a warning is issued. This matches the behavior of
acpi_ut_allocate().

b449f63c8c [PATCH] drivers/pnp/: cleanups
This patch contains the following possible cleanups:
- make needlessly global code static
- #if 0 the following unused global function:
  - core.c: pnp_remove_device
- #if 0 the following unneeded EXPORT_SYMBOL's:
  - card.c: pnp_add_card
  - card.c: pnp_remove_card
  - card.c: pnp_add_card_device
  - card.c: pnp_remove_card_device
  - card.c: pnp_add_card_id
  - core.c: pnp_register_protocol
  - core.c: pnp_unregister_protocol
  - core.c: pnp_add_device
  - core.c: pnp_remove_device
  - pnpacpi/core.c: pnpacpi_protocol
  - driver.c: pnp_add_id
  - isapnp/core.c: isapnp_read_byte
  - manager.c: pnp_auto_config_dev
  - resource.c: pnp_register_dependent_option
  - resource.c: pnp_register_independent_option
  - resource.c: pnp_register_irq_resource
  - resource.c: pnp_register_dma_resource
  - resource.c: pnp_register_port_resource
  - resource.c: pnp_register_mem_resource

Note that this patch #if 0's exactly one functions and removes no
functions. Most it does is the #if 0 of EXPORT_SYMBOL's, so if any modular
code will use any of them, re-adding will be trivial.

Modular ISAPnP might be interesting in some cases, but this is more legacy
code. If someone would work on it to sort all the issues out (starting
with the point that most users of __ISAPNP__ will have to be fixed)
re-enabling the required EXPORT_SYMBOL's won't be hard for him.

4e57b68178 [PATCH] fix missing includes
I recently picked up my older work to remove unnecessary #includes of
sched.h, starting from a patch by Dave Jones to not include sched.h
from module.h. This reduces the number of indirect includes of sched.h
by ~300. Another ~400 pointless direct includes can be removed after
this disentangling (patch to follow later).
However, quite a few indirect includes need to be fixed up for this.

In order to feed the patches through -mm with as little disturbance as
possible, I've split out the fixes I accumulated up to now (complete for
i386 and x86_64, more archs to follow later) and post them before the real
patch. This way this large part of the patch is kept simple with only
adding #includes, and all hunks are independent of each other. So if any
hunk rejects or gets in the way of other patches, just drop it. My scripts
will pick it up again in the next round.

a2822e7f00 [PATCH] pnp: consolidate kmalloc wrappers
ISAPNP, PNPBIOS, and PNPACPI all had their own kmalloc wrappers that
reimplemented kcalloc(). Remove the wrappers and just use kcalloc()
directly.

Note that this also removes the PNPBIOS error message when the kmalloc
fails.

dbed12da5b [ACPI] PNPACPI IRQ workaround for HP workstations
Move pcibios_penalize_isa_irq() to pnpacpi_parse_allocated_irqresource().
Previously we passed the GSI, not the IRQ, and we did it even if parsing
the IRQ resource failed.

Parse IRQ descriptors that contain multiple interrupts. This violates the
spec (in _CRS, only one interrupt per descriptor is allowed), but some
firmware, e.g., HP rx7620 and rx8620 descriptions of HPET, has this bug.

30d5b64b63 [PATCH] broken error path in drivers/pnp/card.c
The error path in pnp_request_card_device() is broken (one variable is
left initialized and the semaphore is not unlocked).

This fixes it (and has been tested).
