init: consolidate prototypes in linux/init.h
The init/main.c file contains some extern declarations for functions defined in architecture code, and it defines some other functions that are called from architecture code with a custom prototype. Both of those result in warnings with 'make W=1': init/calibrate.c:261:37: error: no previous prototype for 'calibrate_delay_is_known' [-Werror=missing-prototypes] init/main.c:790:20: error: no previous prototype for 'mem_encrypt_init' [-Werror=missing-prototypes] init/main.c:792:20: error: no previous prototype for 'poking_init' [-Werror=missing-prototypes] arch/arm64/kernel/irq.c:122:13: error: no previous prototype for 'init_IRQ' [-Werror=missing-prototypes] arch/arm64/kernel/time.c:55:13: error: no previous prototype for 'time_init' [-Werror=missing-prototypes] arch/x86/kernel/process.c:935:13: error: no previous prototype for 'arch_post_acpi_subsys_init' [-Werror=missing-prototypes] init/calibrate.c:261:37: error: no previous prototype for 'calibrate_delay_is_known' [-Werror=missing-prototypes] kernel/fork.c:991:20: error: no previous prototype for 'arch_task_cache_init' [-Werror=missing-prototypes] Add prototypes for all of these in include/linux/init.h or another appropriate header, and remove the duplicate declarations from architecture specific code. cachestat: implement cachestat syscall
There is currently no good way to query the page cache state of large file sets and directory trees. There is mincore(), but it scales poorly: the kernel writes out a lot of bitmap data that userspace has to aggregate, when the user really doesn not care about per-page information in that case. The user also needs to mmap and unmap each file as it goes along, which can be quite slow as well. Some use cases where this information could come in handy: * Allowing database to decide whether to perform an index scan or direct table queries based on the in-memory cache state of the index. * Visibility into the writeback algorithm, for performance issues diagnostic. * Workload-aware writeback pacing: estimating IO fulfilled by page cache (and IO to be done) within a range of a file, allowing for more frequent syncing when and where there is IO capacity, and batching when there is not. * Computing memory usage of large files/directory trees, analogous to the du tool for disk usage. More information about these use cases could be found in the following thread: https://lore.kernel.org/lkml/20230315170934.GA97793@cmpxchg.org/ This patch implements a new syscall that queries cache state of a file and summarizes the number of cached pages, number of dirty pages, number of pages marked for writeback, number of (recently) evicted pages, etc. in a given range. Currently, the syscall is only wired in for x86 architecture. NAME cachestat - query the page cache statistics of a file. SYNOPSIS #include <sys/mman.h> struct cachestat_range { __u64 off; __u64 len; }; struct cachestat { __u64 nr_cache; __u64 nr_dirty; __u64 nr_writeback; __u64 nr_evicted; __u64 nr_recently_evicted; }; int cachestat(unsigned int fd, struct cachestat_range *cstat_range, struct cachestat *cstat, unsigned int flags); DESCRIPTION cachestat() queries the number of cached pages, number of dirty pages, number of pages marked for writeback, number of evicted pages, number of recently evicted pages, in the bytes range given by `off` and `len`. An evicted page is a page that is previously in the page cache but has been evicted since. A page is recently evicted if its last eviction was recent enough that its reentry to the cache would indicate that it is actively being used by the system, and that there is memory pressure on the system. These values are returned in a cachestat struct, whose address is given by the `cstat` argument. The `off` and `len` arguments must be non-negative integers. If `len` > 0, the queried range is [`off`, `off` + `len`]. If `len` == 0, we will query in the range from `off` to the end of the file. The `flags` argument is unused for now, but is included for future extensibility. User should pass 0 (i.e no flag specified). Currently, hugetlbfs is not supported. Because the status of a page can change after cachestat() checks it but before it returns to the application, the returned values may contain stale information. RETURN VALUE On success, cachestat returns 0. On error, -1 is returned, and errno is set to indicate the error. ERRORS EFAULT cstat or cstat_args points to an invalid address. EINVAL invalid flags. EBADF invalid file descriptor. EOPNOTSUPP file descriptor is of a hugetlbfs file [nphamcs@gmail.com: replace rounddown logic with the existing helper] Link: https://lkml.kernel.org/r/20230504022044.3675469-1-nphamcs@gmail.com Link: https://lkml.kernel.org/r/20230503013608.2431726-3-nphamcs@gmail.com Signed-off-by: Nhat Pham <nphamcs@gmail.com> Acked-by: Johannes Weiner <hannes@cmpxchg.org> Cc: Brian Foster <bfoster@redhat.com> Cc: Matthew Wilcox (Oracle) <willy@infradead.org> Cc: Michael Kerrisk <mtk.manpages@gmail.com> Signed-off-by: Andrew Morton <akpm@linux-foundation.org> |

init: improve the name_to_dev_t interface
name_to_dev_t has a very misleading name, that doesn't make clear it should only be used by the early init code, and also has a bad calling convention that doesn't allow returning different kinds of errors. Rename it to early_lookup_bdev to make the use case clear, and return an errno, where -EINVAL means the string could not be parsed, and -ENODEV means it the string was valid, but there was no device found for it. Also stub out the whole call for !CONFIG_BLOCK as all the non-block root cases are always covered in the caller. init: handle ubi/mtd root mounting like all other root types
Assign a Root_Generic magic value for UBI/MTD root and handle the root mounting in mount_root like all other root types. Besides making the code more clear this also means that UBI/MTD root can be used together with an initrd (not that anyone should care). Also factor parsing of the root name into a helper now that it can be easily done and will get more complicated with subsequent patches. Driver core changes for 6.4-rc1
Here is the large set of driver core changes for 6.4-rc1. Once again, a busy development cycle, with lots of changes happening in the driver core in the quest to be able to move "struct bus" and "struct class" into read-only memory, a task now complete with these changes. This will make the future rust interactions with the driver core more "provably correct" as well as providing more obvious lifetime rules for all busses and classes in the kernel. The changes required for this did touch many individual classes and busses as many callbacks were changed to take const * parameters instead. All of these changes have been submitted to the various subsystem maintainers, giving them plenty of time to review, and most of them actually did so. Other than those changes, included in here are a small set of other things: - kobject logging improvements - cacheinfo improvements and updates - obligatory fw_devlink updates and fixes - documentation updates - device property cleanups and const * changes - firwmare loader dependency fixes. All of these have been in linux-next for a while with no reported problems. Such user workers will run with the same credentials as the userspace process they were created from providing stronger security and accounting guarantees than the traditional override_creds() approach ever could've hoped for. The original work was heavily based and optimzed for the needs of io_uring which was the first user. However, as it quickly turned out the ability to create user workers inherting properties from a userspace process is generally useful. The vhost subsystem currently creates workers using the kthread api. The consequences of using the kthread api are that RLIMITs don't work correctly as they are inherited from khtreadd. This leads to bugs where more workers are created than would be allowed by the RLIMITs of the userspace process in lieu of which workers are created. Problems like this disappear with user workers created from the userspace processes for which they perform the work. In addition, providing this api allows vhost to remove additional complexity. For example, cgroup and mm sharing will just work out of the box with user workers based on the relevant userspace process instead of manually ensuring the correct cgroup and mm contexts are used. So the vhost subsystem should simply be made to use the same mechanism as io_uring. To this end the original mechanism used for create_io_thread() is generalized into user workers: - Introduce PF_USER_WORKER as a generic indicator that a given task is a user worker, i.e., a kernel task that was created from a userspace process. Now a PF_IO_WORKER thread is just a specialized version of PF_USER_WORKER. So io_uring io workers raise both flags. - Make copy_process() available to core kernel code - Extend struct kernel_clone_args with the following bitfields allowing to indicate to copy_process(): - to create a user worker (raise PF_USER_WORKER) - to not inherit any files from the userspace process - to ignore signals After all generic changes are in place the vhost subsystem implements a new dedicated vhost api based on user workers. Finally, vhost is switched to rely on the new api moving it off of kthreads. Thanks to Mike for sticking it out and making it through this rather arduous journey" * tag 'v6.4/kernel.user_worker' of git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/brauner/linux: vhost: use vhost_tasks for worker threads vhost: move worker thread fields to new struct vhost_task: Allow vhost layer to use copy_process fork: allow kernel code to call copy_process fork: Add kernel_clone_args flag to ignore signals fork: add kernel_clone_args flag to not dup/clone files fork/vm: Move common PF_IO_WORKER behavior to new flag kernel: Make io_thread and kthread bit fields kthread: Pass in the thread's name during creation kernel: Allow a kernel thread's name to be set in copy_process csky: Remove kernel_thread declaration |

init/initramfs: Fix argument forwarding to panic() in panic_show_mem()
Forwarding variadic argument lists can't be done by passing a va_list to a function with signature foo(...) (as panic() has). It ends up interpreting the va_list itself as a single argument instead of iterating it. printf() happily accepts it of course, leading to corrupt output. Convert panic_show_mem() to a macro to allow forwarding the arguments. The function is trivial enough that it's easier than trying to introduce a vpanic() variant. Merge branch 'slab/for-6.4/slob-removal' into slab/for-next
A series by myself to remove CONFIG_SLOB: The SLOB allocator was deprecated in 6.2 and there have been no complaints so far so let's proceed with the removal. Besides the code cleanup, the main immediate benefit will be allowing kfree() family of function to work on kmem_cache_alloc() objects, which was incompatible with SLOB. This includes kfree_rcu() which had no kmem_cache_free_rcu() counterpart yet and now it shouldn't be necessary anymore. Otherwise it's all straightforward removal. After this series, 'git grep slob' or 'git grep SLOB' will have 3 remaining relevant hits in non-mm code: - tomoyo - patch submitted and carried there, doesn't need to wait for this series - skbuff - patch to cleanup now-unnecessary #ifdefs will be posted to netdev after this is merged, as requested to avoid conflicts - ftrace ring_buffer - patch to remove obsolete comment is carried there The rest of 'git grep SLOB' hits are false positives, or intentional (CREDITS, and mm/Kconfig SLUB_TINY description to help those that will happen to migrate later). |

init: Call mem_encrypt_init() after Hyper-V hypercall init is done
Full Hyper-V initialization, including support for hypercalls, is done as an apic_post_init callback via late_time_init(). mem_encrypt_init() needs to make hypercalls when it marks swiotlb memory as decrypted. But mem_encrypt_init() is currently called a few lines before late_time_init(), so the hypercalls don't work. Fix this by moving mem_encrypt_init() after late_time_init() and related clock initializations. The intervening initializations don't do any I/O that requires the swiotlb, so moving mem_encrypt_init() slightly later has no impact. Networking changes for 6.3.
Core ---- - Add dedicated kmem_cache for typical/small skb->head, avoid having to access struct page at kfree time, and improve memory use. - Introduce sysctl to set default RPS configuration for new netdevs. - Define Netlink protocol specification format which can be used to describe messages used by each family and auto-generate parsers. Add tools for generating kernel data structures and uAPI headers. - Expose all net/core sysctls inside netns. - Remove 4s sleep in netpoll if carrier is instantly detected on boot. - Add configurable limit of MDB entries per port, and port-vlan. - Continue populating drop reasons throughout the stack. - Retire a handful of legacy Qdiscs and classifiers. Protocols --------- - Support IPv4 big TCP (TSO frames larger than 64kB). - Add IP_LOCAL_PORT_RANGE socket option, to control local port range on socket by socket basis. - Track and report in procfs number of MPTCP sockets used. - Support mixing IPv4 and IPv6 flows in the in-kernel MPTCP path manager. - IPv6: don't check net.ipv6.route.max_size and rely on garbage collection to free memory (similarly to IPv4). - Support Penultimate Segment Pop (PSP) flavor in SRv6 (RFC8986). - ICMP: add per-rate limit counters. - Add support for user scanning requests in ieee802154. - Remove static WEP support. - Support minimal Wi-Fi 7 Extremely High Throughput (EHT) rate reporting. - WiFi 7 EHT channel puncturing support (client & AP). BPF --- - Add a rbtree data structure following the "next-gen data structure" precedent set by recently added linked list, that is, by using kfunc + kptr instead of adding a new BPF map type. - Expose XDP hints via kfuncs with initial support for RX hash and timestamp metadata. - Add BPF_F_NO_TUNNEL_KEY extension to bpf_skb_set_tunnel_key to better support decap on GRE tunnel devices not operating in collect metadata. - Improve x86 JIT's codegen for PROBE_MEM runtime error checks. - Remove the need for trace_printk_lock for bpf_trace_printk and bpf_trace_vprintk helpers. - Extend libbpf's bpf_tracing.h support for tracing arguments of kprobes/uprobes and syscall as a special case. - Significantly reduce the search time for module symbols by livepatch and BPF. - Enable cpumasks to be used as kptrs, which is useful for tracing programs tracking which tasks end up running on which CPUs in different time intervals. - Add support for BPF trampoline on s390x and riscv64. - Add capability to export the XDP features supported by the NIC. - Add __bpf_kfunc tag for marking kernel functions as kfuncs. - Add cgroup.memory=nobpf kernel parameter option to disable BPF memory accounting for container environments. Netfilter --------- - Remove the CLUSTERIP target. It has been marked as obsolete for years, and we still have WARN splats wrt. races of the out-of-band /proc interface installed by this target. - Add 'destroy' commands to nf_tables. They are identical to the existing 'delete' commands, but do not return an error if the referenced object (set, chain, rule...) did not exist. Driver API ---------- - Improve cpumask_local_spread() locality to help NICs set the right IRQ affinity on AMD platforms. - Separate C22 and C45 MDIO bus transactions more clearly. - Introduce new DCB table to control DSCP rewrite on egress. - Support configuration of Physical Layer Collision Avoidance (PLCA) Reconciliation Sublayer (RS) (802.3cg-2019). Modern version of shared medium Ethernet. - Support for MAC Merge layer (IEEE 802.3-2018 clause 99). Allowing preemption of low priority frames by high priority frames. - Add support for controlling MACSec offload using netlink SET. - Rework devlink instance refcounts to allow registration and de-registration under the instance lock. Split the code into multiple files, drop some of the unnecessarily granular locks and factor out common parts of netlink operation handling. - Add TX frame aggregation parameters (for USB drivers). - Add a new attr TCA_EXT_WARN_MSG to report TC (offload) warning messages with notifications for debug. - Allow offloading of UDP NEW connections via act_ct. - Add support for per action HW stats in TC. - Support hardware miss to TC action (continue processing in SW from a specific point in the action chain). - Warn if old Wireless Extension user space interface is used with modern cfg80211/mac80211 drivers. Do not support Wireless Extensions for Wi-Fi 7 devices at all. Everyone should switch to using nl80211 interface instead. - Improve the CAN bit timing configuration. Use extack to return error messages directly to user space, update the SJW handling, including the definition of a new default value that will benefit CAN-FD controllers, by increasing their oscillator tolerance. New hardware / drivers ---------------------- - Ethernet: - nVidia BlueField-3 support (control traffic driver) - Ethernet support for imx93 SoCs - Motorcomm yt8531 gigabit Ethernet PHY - onsemi NCN26000 10BASE-T1S PHY (with support for PLCA) - Microchip LAN8841 PHY (incl. cable diagnostics and PTP) - Amlogic gxl MDIO mux - WiFi: - RealTek RTL8188EU (rtl8xxxu) - Qualcomm Wi-Fi 7 devices (ath12k) - CAN: - Renesas R-Car V4H Drivers ------- - Bluetooth: - Set Per Platform Antenna Gain (PPAG) for Intel controllers. - Ethernet NICs: - Intel (1G, igc): - support TSN / Qbv / packet scheduling features of i226 model - Intel (100G, ice): - use GNSS subsystem instead of TTY - multi-buffer XDP support - extend support for GPIO pins to E823 devices - nVidia/Mellanox: - update the shared buffer configuration on PFC commands - implement PTP adjphase function for HW offset control - TC support for Geneve and GRE with VF tunnel offload - more efficient crypto key management method - multi-port eswitch support - Netronome/Corigine: - add DCB IEEE support - support IPsec offloading for NFP3800 - Freescale/NXP (enetc): - enetc: support XDP_REDIRECT for XDP non-linear buffers - enetc: improve reconfig, avoid link flap and waiting for idle - enetc: support MAC Merge layer - Other NICs: - sfc/ef100: add basic devlink support for ef100 - ionic: rx_push mode operation (writing descriptors via MMIO) - bnxt: use the auxiliary bus abstraction for RDMA - r8169: disable ASPM and reset bus in case of tx timeout - cpsw: support QSGMII mode for J721e CPSW9G - cpts: support pulse-per-second output - ngbe: add an mdio bus driver - usbnet: optimize usbnet_bh() by avoiding unnecessary queuing - r8152: handle devices with FW with NCM support - amd-xgbe: support 10Mbps, 2.5GbE speeds and rx-adaptation - virtio-net: support multi buffer XDP - virtio/vsock: replace virtio_vsock_pkt with sk_buff - tsnep: XDP support - Ethernet high-speed switches: - nVidia/Mellanox (mlxsw): - add support for latency TLV (in FW control messages) - Microchip (sparx5): - separate explicit and implicit traffic forwarding rules, make the implicit rules always active - add support for egress DSCP rewrite - IS0 VCAP support (Ingress Classification) - IS2 VCAP filters (protos, L3 addrs, L4 ports, flags, ToS etc.) - ES2 VCAP support (Egress Access Control) - support for Per-Stream Filtering and Policing (802.1Q, 8.6.5.1) - Ethernet embedded switches: - Marvell (mv88e6xxx): - add MAB (port auth) offload support - enable PTP receive for mv88e6390 - NXP (ocelot): - support MAC Merge layer - support for the the vsc7512 internal copper phys - Microchip: - lan9303: convert to PHYLINK - lan966x: support TC flower filter statistics - lan937x: PTP support for KSZ9563/KSZ8563 and LAN937x - lan937x: support Credit Based Shaper configuration - ksz9477: support Energy Efficient Ethernet - other: - qca8k: convert to regmap read/write API, use bulk operations - rswitch: Improve TX timestamp accuracy - Intel WiFi (iwlwifi): - EHT (Wi-Fi 7) rate reporting - STEP equalizer support: transfer some STEP (connection to radio on platforms with integrated wifi) related parameters from the BIOS to the firmware. - Qualcomm 802.11ax WiFi (ath11k): - IPQ5018 support - Fine Timing Measurement (FTM) responder role support - channel 177 support - MediaTek WiFi (mt76): - per-PHY LED support - mt7996: EHT (Wi-Fi 7) support - Wireless Ethernet Dispatch (WED) reset support - switch to using page pool allocator - RealTek WiFi (rtw89): - support new version of Bluetooth co-existance - Mobile: - rmnet: support TX aggregation. bootconfig: Default BOOT_CONFIG_FORCE to y if BOOT_CONFIG_EMBED
When a kernel is built with CONFIG_BOOT_CONFIG_EMBED=y, the intention will normally be to unconditionally provide the specified kernel-boot arguments to the kernel, as opposed to requiring a separately provided bootconfig parameter. Therefore, make the BOOT_CONFIG_FORCE Kconfig option default to y in kernels built with CONFIG_BOOT_CONFIG_EMBED=y. The old semantics may be obtained by manually overriding this default. Allow forcing unconditional bootconfig processing
The BOOT_CONFIG family of Kconfig options allows a bootconfig file containing kernel boot parameters to be embedded into an initrd or into the kernel itself. This can be extremely useful when deploying kernels in cases where some of the boot parameters depend on the kernel version rather than on the server hardware, firmware, or workload. Unfortunately, the "bootconfig" kernel parameter must be specified in order to cause the kernel to look for the embedded bootconfig file, and it clearly does not help to embed this "bootconfig" kernel parameter into that file. Therefore, provide a new BOOT_CONFIG_FORCE Kconfig option that causes the kernel to act as if the "bootconfig" kernel parameter had been specified. In other words, kernels built with CONFIG_BOOT_CONFIG_FORCE=y will look for the embedded bootconfig file even when the "bootconfig" kernel parameter is omitted. This permits kernel-version-dependent kernel boot parameters to be embedded into the kernel image without the need to (for example) update large numbers of boot loaders. RCU pull request for v6.3
This pull request contains the following branches: doc.2023.01.05a: Documentation updates. fixes.2023.01.23a: Miscellaneous fixes, perhaps most notably: o Throttling callback invocation based on the number of callbacks that are now ready to invoke instead of on the total number of callbacks. o Several patches that suppress false-positive boot-time diagnostics, for example, due to lockdep not yet being initialized. o Make expedited RCU CPU stall warnings dump stacks of any tasks that are blocking the stalled grace period. (Normal RCU CPU stall warnings have doen this for mnay years.) o Lazy-callback fixes to avoid delays during boot, suspend, and resume. (Note that lazy callbacks must be explicitly enabled, so this should not (yet) affect production use cases.) kvfree.2023.01.03a: Cause kfree_rcu() and friends to take advantage of polled grace periods, thus reducing memory footprint by almost two orders of magnitude, admittedly on a microbenchmark. This series also begins the transition from kfree_rcu(p) to kfree_rcu_mightsleep(p). This transition was motivated by bugs where kfree_rcu(p), which can block, was typed instead of the intended kfree_rcu(p, rh). srcu.2023.01.03a: SRCU updates, perhaps most notably fixing a bug that causes SRCU to fail when booted on a system with a non-zero boot CPU. This surprising situation actually happens for kdump kernels on the powerpc architecture. It also adds an srcu_down_read() and srcu_up_read(), which act like srcu_read_lock() and srcu_read_unlock(), but allow an SRCU read-side critical section to be handed off from one task to another. srcu-always.2023.02.02a: Cleans up the now-useless SRCU Kconfig option. There are a few more commits that are not yet acked or pulled into maintainer trees, and these will be in a pull request for a later merge window. tasks.2023.01.03a: RCU-tasks updates, perhaps most notably these fixes: o A strange interaction between PID-namespace unshare and the RCU-tasks grace period that results in a low-probability but very real hang. o A race between an RCU tasks rude grace period on a single-CPU system and CPU-hotplug addition of the second CPU that can result in a too-short grace period. o A race between shrinking RCU tasks down to a single callback list and queuing a new callback to some other CPU, but where that queuing is delayed for more than an RCU grace period. This can result in that callback being stranded on the non-boot CPU. torture.2023.01.05a: Torture-test updates and fixes. torturescript.2023.01.03a: Torture-test scripting updates and fixes. stall.2023.01.09a: Provide additional RCU CPU stall-warning information in kernels built with CONFIG_RCU_CPU_STALL_CPUTIME=y, and restore the full five-minute timeout limit for expedited RCU CPU stall warnings. -----BEGIN PGP SIGNATURE----- iQJHBAABCgAxFiEEbK7UrM+RBIrCoViJnr8S83LZ+4wFAmPq29UTHHBhdWxtY2tA a2VybmVsLm9yZwAKCRCevxLzctn7jAhVEACEAKJY1VJ9IUqz7CwzAYkzgRJfiygh oDUXmlqtm6ew9pr2GdLUVCVsUSldzBc0K7Djb/G1niv4JPs+v7YwupIV33+UbStU Qxt6ztTdxc4lKospLm1+2vF9ZdzVEmiP4wVCc4iDarv5FM3FpWSTNc8+L7qmlC+X myjv+GqMTxkXZBvYJOgJGFjDwN8noTd7Fr3mCCVLFm3PXMDa7tcwD6HRP5AqD2N8 qC5M6LEqepKVGmz0mYMLlSN1GPaqIsEcexIFEazRsPEivPh/iafyQCQ/cqxwhXmV vEt7u+dXGZT/oiDq9cJ+/XRDS2RyKIS6dUE14TiiHolDCn1ONESahfA/gXWKykC2 BaGPfjWXrWv/hwbeZ+8xEdkAvTIV92tGpXir9Fby1Z5PjP3balvrnn6hs5AnQBJb NdhRPLzy/dCnEF+CweAYYm1qvTo8cd5nyiNwBZHn7rEAIu3Axrecag1rhFl3AJ07 cpVMQXZtkQVa2X8aIRTUC+ijX6yIqNaHlu0HqNXgIUTDzL4nv5cMjOMzpNQP9/dZ FwAMZYNiOk9IlMiKJ8ZiVcxeiA8ouIBlkYM3k6vGrmiONZ7a/EV/mSHoJqI8bvqr AxUIJ2Ayhg3bxPboL5oKgCiLql0A7ZVvz6quX6McitWGMgaSvel1fDzT3TnZd41e 4AFBFd/+VedUGg== =bBYK -----END PGP SIGNATURE----- Merge tag 'rcu.2023.02.10a' of git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/paulmck/linux-rcu Pull RCU updates from Paul McKenney: - Documentation updates - Miscellaneous fixes, perhaps most notably: - Throttling callback invocation based on the number of callbacks that are now ready to invoke instead of on the total number of callbacks - Several patches that suppress false-positive boot-time diagnostics, for example, due to lockdep not yet being initialized - Make expedited RCU CPU stall warnings dump stacks of any tasks that are blocking the stalled grace period. mm/page_ext: init page_ext early if there are no deferred struct pages
page_ext must be initialized after all struct pages are initialized. Therefore, page_ext is initialized after page_alloc_init_late(), and can optionally be initialized earlier via early_page_ext kernel parameter which as a side effect also disables deferred struct pages. Allow to automatically init page_ext early when there are no deferred struct pages in order to be able to use page_ext during kernel boot and track for example page allocations early. btf, scripts: Exclude Rust CUs with pahole
Version 1.24 of pahole has the capability to exclude compilation units (CUs) of specific languages [1] [2]. Rust, as of writing, is not currently supported by pahole and if it's used with a build that has BTF debugging enabled it results in malformed kernel and module binaries [3]. So it's better for pahole to exclude Rust CUs until support for it arrives. kbuild: Fix CFI hash randomization with KASAN
Clang emits a asan.module_ctor constructor to each object file when KASAN is enabled, and these functions are indirectly called in do_ctors. With CONFIG_CFI_CLANG, the compiler also emits a CFI type hash before each address-taken global function so they can pass indirect call checks. However, in commit |

gcc: disable -Warray-bounds for gcc-11 too
We had already disabled this warning for gcc-12 due to bugs in the value range analysis, but it turns out we end up having some similar problems with gcc-11.3 too, so let's disable it there too. Older gcc versions end up being increasingly less relevant, and hopefully clang and newer version of gcc (ie gcc-13) end up working reliably enough that we still get the build coverage even when we disable this for some versions. sched: Introduce per-memory-map concurrency ID
This feature allows the scheduler to expose a per-memory map concurrency ID to user-space. This concurrency ID is within the possible cpus range, and is temporarily (and uniquely) assigned while threads are actively running within a memory map. If a memory map has fewer threads than cores, or is limited to run on few cores concurrently through sched affinity or cgroup cpusets, the concurrency IDs will be values close to 0, thus allowing efficient use of user-space memory for per-cpu data structures. This feature is meant to be exposed by a new rseq thread area field. The primary purpose of this feature is to do the heavy-lifting needed by memory allocators to allow them to use per-cpu data structures efficiently in the following situations: - Single-threaded applications, - Multi-threaded applications on large systems (many cores) with limited cpu affinity mask, - Multi-threaded applications on large systems (many cores) with restricted cgroup cpuset per container. One of the key concern from scheduler maintainers is the overhead associated with additional spin locks or atomic operations in the scheduler fast-path. This is why the following optimization is implemented. On context switch between threads belonging to the same memory map, transfer the mm_cid from prev to next without any atomic ops. This takes care of use-cases involving frequent context switch between threads belonging to the same memory map. Additional optimizations can be done if the spin locks added when context switching between threads belonging to different memory maps end up being a performance bottleneck. Those are left out of this patch though. A performance impact would have to be clearly demonstrated to justify the added complexity. The credit goes to Paul Turner (Google) for the original virtual cpu id idea. This feature is implemented based on the discussions with Paul Turner and Peter Oskolkov (Google), but I took the liberty to implement scheduler fast-path optimizations and my own NUMA-awareness scheme. The rumor has it that Google have been running a rseq vcpu_id extension internally in production for a year. The tcmalloc source code indeed has comments hinting at a vcpu_id prototype extension to the rseq system call [1]. The following benchmarks do not show any significant overhead added to the scheduler context switch by this feature: * perf bench sched messaging (process) Baseline: 86.5±0.3 ms With mm_cid: 86.7±2.6 ms * perf bench sched messaging (threaded) Baseline: 84.3±3.0 ms With mm_cid: 84.7±2.6 ms * hackbench (process) Baseline: 82.9±2.7 ms With mm_cid: 82.9±2.9 ms * hackbench (threaded) Baseline: 85.2±2.6 ms With mm_cid: 84.4±2.9 ms [1] https://github.com/google/tcmalloc/blob/master/tcmalloc/internal/linux_syscall_support.h#L26 Signed-off-by: Mathieu Desnoyers <mathieu.desnoyers@efficios.com> Signed-off-by: Peter Zijlstra (Intel) <peterz@infradead.org> Link: https://lore.kernel.org/r/20221122203932.231377-8-mathieu.desnoyers@efficios.com |

hardening updates for v6.2-rc1
- Convert flexible array members, fix -Wstringop-overflow warnings, and fix KCFI function type mismatches that went ignored by maintainers (Gustavo A. R. Silva, Nathan Chancellor, Kees Cook). - Remove the remaining side-effect users of ksize() by converting dma-buf, btrfs, and coredump to using kmalloc_size_roundup(), add more __alloc_size attributes, and introduce full testing of all allocator functions. Finally remove the ksize() side-effect so that each allocation-aware checker can finally behave without exceptions. - Introduce oops_limit (default 10,000) and warn_limit (default off) to provide greater granularity of control for panic_on_oops and panic_on_warn (Jann Horn, Kees Cook). - Introduce overflows_type() and castable_to_type() helpers for cleaner overflow checking. - Improve code generation for strscpy() and update str*() kern-doc. - Convert strscpy and sigphash tests to KUnit, and expand memcpy tests. - Always use a non-NULL argument for prepare_kernel_cred(). - Disable structleak plugin in FORTIFY KUnit test (Anders Roxell). - Adjust orphan linker section checking to respect CONFIG_WERROR (Xin Li). - Make sure siginfo is cleared for forced SIGKILL (haifeng.xu). - Fix um vs FORTIFY warnings for always-NULL arguments. -----BEGIN PGP SIGNATURE----- iQJKBAABCgA0FiEEpcP2jyKd1g9yPm4TiXL039xtwCYFAmOZSOoWHGtlZXNjb29r QGNocm9taXVtLm9yZwAKCRCJcvTf3G3AJjAAD/0YkvpU7f03f8hcQMJK6wv//24K AW41hEaBikq9RcmkuvkLLrJRibGgZ5O2xUkUkxRs/HxhkhrZ0kEw8sbwZe8MoWls F4Y9+TDjsrdHmjhfcBZdLnVxwcKK5wlaEcpjZXtbsfcdhx3TbgcDA23YELl5t0K+ I11j4kYmf9SLl4CwIrSP5iACml8CBHARDh8oIMF7FT/LrjNbM8XkvBcVVT6hTbOV yjgA8WP2e9GXvj9GzKgqvd0uE/kwPkVAeXLNFWopPi4FQ8AWjlxbBZR0gamA6/EB d7TIs0ifpVU2JGQaTav4xO6SsFMj3ntoUI0qIrFaTxZAvV4KYGrPT/Kwz1O4SFaG rN5lcxseQbPQSBTFNG4zFjpywTkVCgD2tZqDwz5Rrmiraz0RyIokCN+i4CD9S0Ds oEd8JSyLBk1sRALczkuEKo0an5AyC9YWRcBXuRdIHpLo08PsbeUUSe//4pe303cw 0ApQxYOXnrIk26MLElTzSMImlSvlzW6/5XXzL9ME16leSHOIfDeerPnc9FU9Eb3z ODv22z6tJZ9H/apSUIHZbMciMbbVTZ8zgpkfydr08o87b342N/ncYHZ5cSvQ6DWb jS5YOIuvl46/IhMPT16qWC8p0bP5YhxoPv5l6Xr0zq0ooEj0E7keiD/SzoLvW+Qs AHXcibguPRQBPAdiPQ== =yaaN -----END PGP SIGNATURE----- Merge tag 'hardening-v6.2-rc1' of git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/kees/linux Pull kernel hardening updates from Kees Cook: - Convert flexible array members, fix -Wstringop-overflow warnings, and fix KCFI function type mismatches that went ignored by maintainers (Gustavo A. modules changes for v6.2-rc1
Tux gets for xmass improving the average lookup performance of kallsyms_lookup_name() by 715x thanks to the work by Zhen Lei, which upgraded our old implementation from being O(n) to O(log(n)), while also retaining the old implementation support on /proc/kallsyms. The only penalty was increasing the memory footprint by 3 * kallsyms_num_syms. Folks who want to improve this further now also have a dedicated selftest facility through KALLSYMS_SELFTEST. Since I had to start reviewing other future kallsyms / modules enhancements by Nick Alcock (his stuff is not merged, it requires more work) I carefully reviewed and merged Zhen Lei's kallsyms changes through modules-next tree a bit less than a month ago. So this has been exposed on linux-next for about a month now with no reported regressions. Stephen Boyd added zstd in-kernel decompression support, but the only users of this would be folks using the load-pin LSM because otherwise we do module docompression in userspace. This is the newest code and was merged last week on modules-next. We spent a lot of time analyzing and coming to grips with a proper fix to an old modules regression which only recently came to light (since v5.3-rc1, May 2019) but even though I merged that fix onto modules-next last week I'm having second thoughts about it now as I was writing about that fix in this git tag message for you, as I found a few things we cannot quite justify there yet. So I'm going to push back to the drawing board again there until all i's are properly dotted. Yes, it's a regression but the issue has been there for 2 years now and it came up because of high end CPU count, it can wait a *tiny* bit more for a proper fix. The only other thing with mentioning is a minor boot time optimization by Rasmus Villemoes which deferes param_sysfs_init() to late init. The rest is cleanups and minor fixes. -----BEGIN PGP SIGNATURE----- iQJGBAABCgAwFiEENnNq2KuOejlQLZofziMdCjCSiKcFAmOX54cSHG1jZ3JvZkBr ZXJuZWwub3JnAAoJEM4jHQowkoinFSgP/AxBdTOljYoqHnIL2/5f7PO2epSUq4Yu h42kE7aQ9qbiR9Rq2piCmD0SmeroVBIfxoMJwxnTuUy5IeujLXe6mtt7nG7Z96H1 mFxBCF63LqE/VUp/bYTusJkOPLksmhK2tCo5zMEnrRuhDAMrbFRc/S3jGm15P3/v /hdzh384Ou4cEQPQY6nsMwSvYsuNeYAhE/BqhkrQ1LDOAgSGx8DUp4db7i1/gmxG PAu7CPJEdEGljSHhG7v7PmqYYAyhyMRsW2WkCndQUvpcfZ3Q5abMFMa+9DQuT0j9 VIJtIFMZzgC+wy+1HB2hdhVcfYj1cGul0DIKugbJ9obTrIEiB8BFSaNluZroKXkU MIB/rlQCU8kkiw5CocTwM7APHPyv5sZf97oYm9MHcRE2QYYq+o4XKul3Pl2vcEB7 Cetbdxv+rUGl4Qm0U9AbXzZijwOnRu0XZShy4FTjwhipBSER93hGzYph9beSS+sb QLnDK1c6fATT9Ye95w9Oq7/4wdK5yDifRLwA57qo4oKNz4F4MhToPcIQbhLtU2IC NHWa5udylfbpNf2MnpCw0040b1hUV8atUxwZ2kBMPH/5bodXzQBKZkQEpzdPyOD8 sihPRlVmiVVXwRMxtQtFZXpb4l9Zg9YTEFMAA1ixgT1Gefh1VjAMAfOmy/hqiqBp x5CXDwftRckB =acEB -----END PGP SIGNATURE----- Merge tag 'modules-6.2-rc1' of git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/mcgrof/linux Pull modules updates from Luis Chamberlain: "Tux gets for xmas an improvement to the average lookup performance of kallsyms_lookup_name() by 715x thanks to the work by Zhen Lei, which upgraded our old implementation from being O(n) to O(log(n)), while also retaining the old implementation support on /proc/kallsyms. proc: give /proc/cmdline size
Most /proc files don't have length (in fstat sense). This leads to inefficiencies when reading such files with APIs commonly found in modern programming languages. They open file, then fstat descriptor, get st_size == 0 and either assume file is empty or start reading without knowing target size. cat(1) does OK because it uses large enough buffer by default. But naive programs copy-pasted from SO aren't: let mut f = std::fs::File::open("/proc/cmdline").unwrap(); let mut buf: Vec<u8> = Vec::new(); f.read_to_end(&mut buf).unwrap(); will result in openat(AT_FDCWD, "/proc/cmdline", O_RDONLY|O_CLOEXEC) = 3 statx(0, NULL, AT_STATX_SYNC_AS_STAT, STATX_ALL, NULL) = -1 EFAULT (Bad address) statx(3, "", AT_STATX_SYNC_AS_STAT|AT_EMPTY_PATH, STATX_ALL, {stx_mask=STATX_BASIC_STATS|STATX_MNT_ID, stx_attributes=0, stx_mode=S_IFREG|0444, stx_size=0, ...}) = 0 lseek(3, 0, SEEK_CUR) = 0 read(3, "BOOT_IMAGE=(hd3,gpt2)/vmlinuz-5.", 32) = 32 read(3, "19.6-100.fc35.x86_64 root=/dev/m", 32) = 32 read(3, "apper/fedora_localhost--live-roo"..., 64) = 64 read(3, "ocalhost--live-swap rd.lvm.lv=fe"..., 128) = 116 read(3, "", 12) open/stat is OK, lseek looks silly but there are 3 unnecessary reads because Rust starts with 32 bytes per Vec<u8> and grows from there. In case of /proc/cmdline, the length is known precisely. Make variables readonly while I'm at it. P.S.: I tried to scp /proc/cpuinfo today and got empty file but this is separate story. kallsyms: Add self-test facility
Added test cases for basic functions and performance of functions kallsyms_lookup_name(), kallsyms_on_each_symbol() and kallsyms_on_each_match_symbol(). It also calculates the compression rate of the kallsyms compression algorithm for the current symbol set. The basic functions test begins by testing a set of symbols whose address values are known. Then, traverse all symbol addresses and find the corresponding symbol name based on the address. It's impossible to determine whether these addresses are correct, but we can use the above three functions along with the addresses to test each other. Due to the traversal operation of kallsyms_on_each_symbol() is too slow, only 60 symbols can be tested in one second, so let it test on average once every 128 symbols. The other two functions validate all symbols. If the basic functions test is passed, print only performance test results. If the test fails, print error information, but do not perform subsequent performance tests. Start self-test automatically after system startup if CONFIG_KALLSYMS_SELFTEST=y. Example of output content: (prefix 'kallsyms_selftest:' is omitted start --------------------------------------------------------- | nr_symbols | compressed size | original size | ratio(%) | |---------------------------------------------------------| | 107543 | 1357912 | 2407433 | 56.40 | --------------------------------------------------------- kallsyms_lookup_name() looked up 107543 symbols The time spent on each symbol is (ns): min=630, max=35295, avg=7353 kallsyms_on_each_symbol() traverse all: 11782628 ns kallsyms_on_each_match_symbol() traverse all: 9261 ns finish Signed-off-by: Zhen Lei <thunder.leizhen@huawei.com> Signed-off-by: Luis Chamberlain <mcgrof@kernel.org> |

kbuild: upgrade the orphan section warning to an error if CONFIG_WERROR is set
Andrew Cooper suggested upgrading the orphan section warning to a hard link error. However Nathan Chancellor said outright turning the warning into an error with no escape hatch might be too aggressive, as we have had these warnings triggered by new compiler generated sections, and suggested turning orphan sections into an error only if CONFIG_WERROR is set. Kees Cook echoed and emphasized that the mandate from Linus is that we should avoid breaking builds. It wrecks bisection, it causes problems across compiler versions, etc. Thus upgrade the orphan section warning to a hard link error only if CONFIG_WERROR is set. It's been gone for over 2 years now and this is the first we've heard of it, but userspace breakage is userspace breakage, so O_NONBLOCK is now back. - Use randomness from hardware RNGs much more often during early boot, at the same interval that crng reseeds are done, from Dominik. - A semantic change in hardware RNG throttling, so that the hwrng framework can properly feed random.c with randomness from hardware RNGs that aren't specifically marked as creditable. A related patch coming to you via Herbert's hwrng tree depends on this one, not to compile, but just to function properly, so you may want to merge this PULL before that one. - A fix to clamp credited bits from the interrupts pool to the size of the pool sample. This is mainly just a theoretical fix, as it'd be pretty hard to exceed it in practice. - Oracle reported that InfiniBand TCP latency regressed by around 10-15% after a change a few cycles ago made at the request of the RT folks, in which we hoisted a somewhat rare operation (1 in 1024 times) out of the hard IRQ handler and into a workqueue, a pretty common and boring pattern. It turns out, though, that scheduling a worker from there has overhead of its own, whereas scheduling a timer on that same CPU for the next jiffy amortizes better and doesn't incur the same overhead. I also eliminated a cache miss by moving the work_struct (and subsequently, the timer_list) to below a critical cache line, so that the more critical members that are accessed on every hard IRQ aren't split between two cache lines. - The boot-time initialization of the RNG has been split into two approximate phases: what we can accomplish before timekeeping is possible and what we can accomplish after. This winds up being useful so that we can use RDRAND to seed the RNG before CONFIG_SLAB_FREELIST_RANDOM=y systems initialize slabs, in addition to other early uses of randomness. The effect is that systems with RDRAND (or a bootloader seed) will never see any warnings at all when setting CONFIG_WARN_ALL_UNSEEDED_RANDOM=y. And kfence benefits from getting a better seed of its own. - Small systems without much entropy sometimes wind up putting some truncated serial number read from flash into hostname, so contribute utsname changes to the RNG, without crediting. - Add smaller batches to serve requests for smaller integers, and make use of them when people ask for random numbers bounded by a given compile-time constant. This has positive effects all over the tree, most notably in networking and kfence. - The original jitter algorithm intended (I believe) to schedule the timer for the next jiffy, not the next-next jiffy, yet it used mod_timer(jiffies + 1), which will fire on the next-next jiffy, instead of what I believe was intended, mod_timer(jiffies), which will fire on the next jiffy. So fix that. - Fix a comment typo, from William. * tag 'random-6.1-rc1-for-linus' of git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/crng/random: random: clear new batches when bringing new CPUs online random: fix typos in get_random_bytes() comment random: schedule jitter credit for next jiffy, not in two jiffies prandom: make use of smaller types in prandom_u32_max random: add 8-bit and 16-bit batches utsname: contribute changes to RNG random: use init_utsname() instead of utsname() kfence: use better stack hash seed random: split initialization into early step and later step random: use expired timer rather than wq for mixing fast pool random: avoid reading two cache lines on irq randomness random: clamp credited irq bits to maximum mixed random: throttle hwrng writes if no entropy is credited random: use hwgenerator randomness more frequently at early boot random: restore O_NONBLOCK support |

init: kmsan: call KMSAN initialization routines
kmsan_init_shadow() scans the mappings created at boot time and creates metadata pages for those mappings. When the memblock allocator returns pages to pagealloc, we reserve 2/3 of those pages and use them as metadata for the remaining 1/3. Once KMSAN starts, every page allocated by pagealloc has its associated shadow and origin pages. kmsan_initialize() initializes the bookkeeping for init_task and enables KMSAN. random: split initialization into early step and later step
The full RNG initialization relies on some timestamps, made possible with initialization functions like time_init() and timekeeping_init(). However, these are only available rather late in initialization. Meanwhile, other things, such as memory allocator functions, make use of the RNG much earlier. So split RNG initialization into two phases. We can provide arch randomness very early on, and then later, after timekeeping and such are available, initialize the rest. This ensures that, for example, slabs are properly randomized if RDRAND is available. Without this, CONFIG_SLAB_FREELIST_RANDOM=y loses a degree of its security, because its random seed is potentially deterministic, since it hasn't yet incorporated RDRAND. It also makes it possible to use a better seed in kfence, which currently relies on only the cycle counter. Another positive consequence is that on systems with RDRAND, running with CONFIG_WARN_ALL_UNSEEDED_RANDOM=y results in no warnings at all. One subtle side effect of this change is that on systems with no RDRAND, RDTSC is now only queried by random_init() once, committing the moment of the function call, instead of multiple times as before. This is intentional, as the multiple RDTSCs in a loop before weren't accomplishing very much, with jitter being better provided by try_to_generate_entropy(). Plus, filling blocks with RDTSC is still being done in extract_entropy(), which is necessarily called before random bytes are served anyway. Now that UTS_VERSION was separated out, this header can be generated much earlier, and probably the top Makefile is a better place to do it than init/Makefile. Signed-off-by: Masahiro Yamada <masahiroy@kernel.org> |

kbuild: build init/built-in.a just once
Kbuild builds init/built-in.a twice; first during the ordinary directory descending, second from scripts/link-vmlinux.sh. We do this because UTS_VERSION contains the build version and the timestamp. We cannot update it during the normal directory traversal since we do not yet know if we need to update vmlinux. UTS_VERSION is temporarily calculated, but omitted from the update check. Otherwise, vmlinux would be rebuilt every time. When Kbuild results in running link-vmlinux.sh, it increments the version number in the .version file and takes the timestamp at that time to really fix UTS_VERSION. However, updating the same file twice is a footgun. To avoid nasty timestamp issues, all build artifacts that depend on init/built-in.a are atomically generated in link-vmlinux.sh, where some of them do not need rebuilding. To fix this issue, this commit changes as follows: [1] Split UTS_VERSION out to include/generated/utsversion.h from include/generated/compile.h include/generated/utsversion.h is generated just before the vmlinux link. It is generated under include/generated/ because some decompressors (s390, x86) use UTS_VERSION. [2] Split init_uts_ns and linux_banner out to init/version-timestamp.c from init/version.c init_uts_ns and linux_banner contain UTS_VERSION. During the ordinary directory descending, they are compiled with __weak and used to determine if vmlinux needs relinking. Just before the vmlinux link, they are compiled without __weak to embed the real version and timestamp. Signed-off-by: Masahiro Yamada <masahiroy@kernel.org> |

Maple Tree: add new data structure
Patch series "Introducing the Maple Tree" The maple tree is an RCU-safe range based B-tree designed to use modern processor cache efficiently. There are a number of places in the kernel that a non-overlapping range-based tree would be beneficial, especially one with a simple interface. If you use an rbtree with other data structures to improve performance or an interval tree to track non-overlapping ranges, then this is for you. The tree has a branching factor of 10 for non-leaf nodes and 16 for leaf nodes. With the increased branching factor, it is significantly shorter than the rbtree so it has fewer cache misses. The removal of the linked list between subsequent entries also reduces the cache misses and the need to pull in the previous and next VMA during many tree alterations. The first user that is covered in this patch set is the vm_area_struct, where three data structures are replaced by the maple tree: the augmented rbtree, the vma cache, and the linked list of VMAs in the mm_struct. The long term goal is to reduce or remove the mmap_lock contention. The plan is to get to the point where we use the maple tree in RCU mode. Readers will not block for writers. A single write operation will be allowed at a time. A reader re-walks if stale data is encountered. VMAs would be RCU enabled and this mode would be entered once multiple tasks are using the mm_struct. Davidlor said : Yes I like the maple tree, and at this stage I don't think we can ask for : more from this series wrt the MM - albeit there seems to still be some : folks reporting breakage. Fundamentally I see Liam's work to (re)move : complexity out of the MM (not to say that the actual maple tree is not : complex) by consolidating the three complimentary data structures very : much worth it considering performance does not take a hit. This was very : much a turn off with the range locking approach, which worst case scenario : incurred in prohibitive overhead. Also as Liam and Matthew have : mentioned, RCU opens up a lot of nice performance opportunities, and in : addition academia[1] has shown outstanding scalability of address spaces : with the foundation of replacing the locked rbtree with RCU aware trees. A similar work has been discovered in the academic press https://pdos.csail.mit.edu/papers/rcuvm:asplos12.pdf Sheer coincidence. We designed our tree with the intention of solving the hardest problem first. Upon settling on a b-tree variant and a rough outline, we researched ranged based b-trees and RCU b-trees and did find that article. So it was nice to find reassurances that we were on the right path, but our design choice of using ranges made that paper unusable for us. This patch (of 70): The maple tree is an RCU-safe range based B-tree designed to use modern processor cache efficiently. There is additional BUG_ON() calls added within the tree, most of which are in debug code. These will be replaced with a WARN_ON() call in the future. There is also additional BUG_ON() calls within the code which will also be reduced in number at a later date. These exist to catch things such as out-of-range accesses which would crash anyways. powerpc/64: Remove PPC64 special case for cputime accounting default
Distro kernels tend to be moving to VIRT_CPU_ACCOUNTING_GEN, and there is not much reason why PPC64 should be special here. Remove the special case and make the ppc64 and pseries defconfigs use GEN accounting (others will use TICK, as-per Kconfig defaults). VIRT_CPU_ACCOUNTING_NATIVE does provide scaled vtime and stolen time apportioned between system and user time, and vtime accounting is not unconditionally enabled, and possibly other things. But it would be better at this point to extend GEN to cover important missing features rather than directing users back to a less used option.
