Please consider pulling the clk framework changes toward 3.19. It is
much later than usual due to several last minute bugs that had to be addressed. As usual the majority of changes are new drivers and modifications to existing drivers. The core recieved many fixes along with the groundwork for several large changes coming in the future which will better parition clock providers from clock consumers. -----BEGIN PGP SIGNATURE----- Version: GnuPG v1 iQIcBAABAgAGBQJUlMRQAAoJEDqPOy9afJhJgdUQAK4myJT0q10LSqe9piwzGVXg uDcIN5CTtbdYkvdGIfCjeqz3t+DClnAMPx2ZPIjC0Z1mIvqq+ViqwP5U8kKd7z1a WCKV8e5Et3O1WNbslzsx5Z2JYJNgzqr1xxWAOLTLh5rYxVwE5b946Yv4Whxa694I ugm4wNlibeN3H8pnyH8YEiWEtahtu7B5v/9WELpyREwNxw7ZA18MttEvWaamAPHG rAxhQCB3A3HaIvyg8KFdVmwOBZQMc2EWT00kJfdRWL4/iGAipKCnbuh1c8Pr/RQE XRg5Y+MuMLotoUELYYeZHtEmIlW3A+9gR6tLivswPpOP8/5BVUyA5Hh0yCGUqUHD s5Iheq7s7xnKEgIu9cD4tf1nCY41gw+4/I4pm47WLkaRgehcEBcAibVC3CupZ5pI hJiFqEKWPKEk8vAJ/mM+wCGI4w01+eoICBm4EG06Nwj4xkQcAVqE67ZvgVs1LrmL efqSxkWpNoetf0Q12cfePHmWtesGNdvljLdXQ54T4qH9HxNaI9/9eM6tyFTfrDSe BG5h7gbPr6/aM/1FfcWn5jQIfjEjPhQtSpCehs8pMf/pG5QZgftBtwe3p+yz7zXJ Q/v8xNEcZ7Ze6/9rJsAcbLzyzcdk9NzTlEMplzGBoUQFNiEXKoIjCDKAx39UFtMz EccWXvt9iNZZhmDcu0pU =jD84 -----END PGP SIGNATURE----- Merge tag 'clk-for-linus-3.19' of git://git.linaro.org/people/mike.turquette/linux Pull clk framework updates from Mike Turquette: "This is much later than usual due to several last minute bugs that had to be addressed. powerpc updates for 3.19 batch 2
The highlight is the series that reworks the idle management on powernv, which allows us to use deeper idle states on those machines. There's the fix from Anton for the "BUG at kernel/smpboot.c:134!" problem. An i2c driver for powernv. This is acked by Wolfram Sang, and he asked that we take it through the powerpc tree. A fix for audit from rgb at Red Hat, acked by Paul Moore who is one of the audit maintainers. A patch from Ben to export the symbol map of our OPAL firmware as a sysfs file, so that tools can use it. Also some CXL fixes, a couple of powerpc perf fixes, a fix for smt-enabled, and the patch to add __force to get_user() so we can use bitwise types. -----BEGIN PGP SIGNATURE----- Version: GnuPG v1 iQIcBAABAgAGBQJUk+oCAAoJEFHr6jzI4aWADBAP/i/CJ+cu6o4mzNDdfs8bnxqn RGZCSV+SrkTZPcoLbLiM9iaqq34ORVIn7hwkhkTz2/koluMVfTsqtVulMoFf+hVd GTVt81MjMFzA3hM3bXEV58KRT79+64K54dLCe0F7OaD6f4AikKR4LLz/PY0EBMiZ 2h13uQlfglaMeYTsaD9eeUpIIKs7+PwsNqUknmN9We07WWfxWqnRpiTR4TYTMXx4 3lQPvCnnHokwDqjuKgwiqDVSaCfCl8laS1i+BPk0G0aRV1AnPDvR3MhgVb2IpNxX Joxy2D1HSawwDhqHOsId8dkGZXOM4vzo+Y658qnC1XfThqE0MhA+kCfa5/b6xlOR K7nDO5A41B6nXB3mMOQh/szTXSIa8KJRTR3ibbJJrMdF6F0TN0JLLQNUcmM4j/5D vvgZEzvFNZhWX98ktlQLde2E4ClWJg6mWESCGSgJeVjIXaxe/6GneIa8vLKm5QMu OoykNsASMDGqddYMGoYeX/mSsvjPjK0PDO2q19sPbkP8xpyDLx6J8xo+5hO4l8xc 0Cdb38ECfeno+w5oKAnjidHnz0KYBsuYFLeS+rV0b8sUSWAzfdEjSn2AVIQ8gLOv IOCAqwZ5tL9EcUs+AKru5EHtBEV+2XB54xPRxfdFS/k+vYRE7MpS3ipxveIynN2l eRxf9hsSO7ASNDd0b3ID =GXdK -----END PGP SIGNATURE----- Merge tag 'powerpc-3.19-2' of git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/mpe/linux Pull second batch of powerpc updates from Michael Ellerman: "The highlight is the series that reworks the idle management on powernv, which allows us to use deeper idle states on those machines. More ACPI and power management updates for 3.19-rc1
- Fix a regression in leds-gpio introduced by a recent commit that inadvertently changed the name of one of the properties used by the driver (Fabio Estevam). - Fix a regression in the ACPI backlight driver introduced by a recent fix that missed one special case that had to be taken into account (Aaron Lu). - Drop the level of some new kernel messages from the ACPI core introduced by a recent commit to KERN_DEBUG which they should have used from the start and drop some other unuseful KERN_ERR messages printed by ACPI (Rafael J Wysocki). - Revert an incorrect commit modifying the cpupower tool (Prarit Bhargava). - Fix two regressions introduced by recent commits in the OPP library and clean up some existing minor issues in that code (Viresh Kumar). - Continue to replace CONFIG_PM_RUNTIME with CONFIG_PM throughout the tree (or drop it where that can be done) in order to make it possible to eliminate CONFIG_PM_RUNTIME (Rafael J Wysocki, Ulf Hansson, Ludovic Desroches). There will be one more "CONFIG_PM_RUNTIME removal" batch after this one, because some new uses of it have been introduced during the current merge window, but that should be sufficient to finally get rid of it. - Make the ACPI EC driver more robust against race conditions related to GPE handler installation failures (Lv Zheng). - Prevent the ACPI device PM core code from attempting to disable GPEs that it has not enabled which confuses ACPICA and makes it report errors unnecessarily (Rafael J Wysocki). - Add a "force" command line switch to the intel_pstate driver to make it possible to override the blacklisting of some systems in that driver if needed (Ethan Zhao). - Improve intel_pstate code documentation and add a MAINTAINERS entry for it (Kristen Carlson Accardi). - Make the ACPI fan driver create cooling device interfaces witn names that reflect the IDs of the ACPI device objects they are associated with, except for "generic" ACPI fans (PNP ID "PNP0C0B"). That's necessary for user space thermal management tools to be able to connect the fans with the parts of the system they are supposed to be cooling properly. 3.19 changes for KVM:
- spring cleaning: removed support for IA64, and for hardware-assisted virtualization on the PPC970 - ARM, PPC, s390 all had only small fixes For x86: - small performance improvements (though only on weird guests) - usual round of hardware-compliancy fixes from Nadav - APICv fixes - XSAVES support for hosts and guests. XSAVES hosts were broken because the (non-KVM) XSAVES patches inadvertently changed the KVM userspace ABI whenever XSAVES was enabled; hence, this part is going to stable. Guest support is just a matter of exposing the feature and CPUID leaves support. Right now KVM is broken for PPC BookE in your tree (doesn't compile). As the merge window is still open, and this code was not as complex
as I thought it might be. I'm pushing this in now. This will allow Thomas to debug his irq work for 3.20. This adds two new features: 1) Allow traceopoints to be enabled right after mm_init(). By passing in the trace_event= kernel command line parameter, tracepoints can be enabled at boot up. For debugging things like the initialization of interrupts, it is needed to have tracepoints enabled very early. People have asked about this before and this has been on my todo list. As it can be helpful for Thomas to debug his upcoming 3.20 IRQ work, I'm pushing this now. This way he can add tracepoints into the IRQ set up and have users enable them when things go wrong. 2) Have the tracepoints printed via printk() (the console) when they are triggered. If the irq code locks up or reboots the box, having the tracepoint output go into the kernel ring buffer is useless for debugging. But being able to add the tp_printk kernel command line option along with the trace_event= option will have these tracepoints printed as they occur, and that can be really useful for debugging early lock up or reboot problems. This code is not that intrusive and it passed all my tests. Thomas tried them out too and it works for his needs. Staging patches for 3.19-rc1
Here's the big staging tree pull request for 3.19-rc1. We continued to delete more lines than were added, always a good thing, but not at a huge rate this release, only about 70k lines removed overall mostly from removing the horrid bcm driver. Lots of normal staging driver cleanups and fixes all over the place, well over a thousand of them, the shortlog shows all the horrid details. The "contentious" thing here is the movement of the Android binder code out of staging into the "real" part of the kernel. This is code that has been stable for a few years now and is working as-is in the tens of millions of devices with no issues. Yes, the code is horrid, and the userspace api leaves a lot to be desired, but it's not going to change due to legacy issues that we have no control over. Because so many devices and companies rely on this, and the code is stable, might as well promote it out of staging. This was all discussed at the Linux Plumbers conference, and everyone participating agreed that this was the best way forward. There is work happening to replace the binder code with something new that is happening right now, but I don't expect to see the results of that work for another year at the earliest. If that ever happens, and Android switches over to it, I'll gladly remove this version. As for maintainers, I'll be glad to maintain this code, I've been doing it for the past few years with no problems. I'll send a MAINTAINERS entry for it before 3.19-final is out, still need to talk to the Google developers about if they are willing to help with it or not, last I checked they were, which was good. All of these patches have been in linux-next for a while with no reported issues. They have an open source userspace built on top of this interface, and the code looks as good as it was going to get out of tree. - Initial atomic modesetting work The need for an atomic modesetting interface to allow userspace to try and send a complete set of modesetting state to the driver has arisen, and been suffering from neglect this past year. tracing: Add tp_printk cmdline to have tracepoints go to printk()
Add the kernel command line tp_printk option that will have tracepoints that are active sent to printk() as well as to the trace buffer. Passing "tp_printk" will activate this. To turn it off, the sysctl /proc/sys/kernel/tracepoint_printk can have '0' echoed into it. Note, this only works if the cmdline option is used. Echoing 1 into the sysctl file without the cmdline option will have no affect. Note, this is a dangerous option. Having high frequency tracepoints send their data to printk() can possibly cause a live lock. This is another reason why this is only active if the command line option is used. x86, mpx: Update documentation
I was writing some MPX test programs and realized that the current design makes it tricky. I did something like: bndcfgu |= bnd_dir | BNDCFGU_ENABLE; xrstor(); printf("xrstor done"); // #BR bounds exception here prctl(MPX_ENABLE_MANAGEMENT); and then compiled the app with "-fcheck-pointer-bounds -mmpx" to enable MPX instrumentation. The problem is that there is MPX instrumentation inserted in to the area of the printf(). The kernel gets a bounds exception and since management isn't yet enabled, it SIGSEGV's. Add a bit to the documentation to explain a way around this and where apps need to be careful. This is the bulk of GPIO changes for the v3.19 series:
- A new API that allows setting more than one GPIO at the time. This is implemented for the new descriptor-based API only and makes it possible to e.g. toggle a clock and data line at the same time, if the hardware can do this with a single register write. ipc/msg: increase MSGMNI, remove scaling
SysV can be abused to allocate locked kernel memory. For most systems, a small limit doesn't make sense, see the discussion with regards to SHMMAX. Therefore: increase MSGMNI to the maximum supported. And: If we ignore the risk of locking too much memory, then an automatic scaling of MSGMNI doesn't make sense. Therefore the logic can be removed. The code preserves auto_msgmni to avoid breaking any user space applications that expect that the value exists. Notes: 1) If an administrator must limit the memory allocations, then he can set MSGMNI as necessary. Or he can disable sysv entirely (as e.g. done by Android). 2) MSGMAX and MSGMNB are intentionally not increased, as these values are used to control latency vs. throughput: If MSGMNB is large, then msgsnd() just returns and more messages can be queued before a task switch to a task that calls msgrcv() is forced. mm/page_owner: keep track of page owners
This is the page owner tracking code which is introduced so far ago. It is resident on Andrew's tree, though, nobody tried to upstream so it remain as is. Our company uses this feature actively to debug memory leak or to find a memory hogger so I decide to upstream this feature. This functionality help us to know who allocates the page. When allocating a page, we store some information about allocation in extra memory. Later, if we need to know status of all pages, we can get and analyze it from this stored information. In previous version of this feature, extra memory is statically defined in struct page, but, in this version, extra memory is allocated outside of struct page. It enables us to turn on/off this feature at boottime without considerable memory waste. Although we already have tracepoint for tracing page allocation/free, using it to analyze page owner is rather complex. We need to enlarge the trace buffer for preventing overlapping until userspace program launched. And, launched program continually dump out the trace buffer for later analysis and it would change system behaviour with more possibility rather than just keeping it in memory, so bad for debug. Moreover, we can use page_owner feature further for various purposes. For example, we can use it for fragmentation statistics implemented in this patch. And, I also plan to implement some CMA failure debugging feature using this interface. I'd like to give the credit for all developers contributed this feature, but, it's not easy because I don't know exact history. Sorry about that. Below is people who has "Signed-off-by" in the patches in Andrew's tree. mm/debug-pagealloc: make debug-pagealloc boottime configurable
Now, we have prepared to avoid using debug-pagealloc in boottime. So introduce new kernel-parameter to disable debug-pagealloc in boottime, and makes related functions to be disabled in this case. Only non-intuitive part is change of guard page functions. Because guard page is effective only if debug-pagealloc is enabled, turning off according to debug-pagealloc is reasonable thing to do. arm/arm64: KVM: Clarify KVM_ARM_VCPU_INIT ABI
It is not clear that this ioctl can be called multiple times for a given vcpu. Userspace already does this, so clarify the ABI. Also specify that userspace is expected to always make secondary and subsequent calls to the ioctl with the same parameters for the VCPU as the initial call (which userspace also already does). Add code to check that userspace doesn't violate that ABI in the future, and move the kvm_vcpu_set_target() function which is currently duplicated between the 32-bit and 64-bit versions in guest.c to a common static function in arm.c, shared between both architectures.
