Once upon a time a bunch of serial drivers used to provide that;
today it's only amiserial and it's FUBAR - the structure being
copied to userland includes kernel pointers, fields with
config-dependent size, etc. No userland code using it could
possibly survive - e.g. enabling lockdep definitely changes the
layout. Besides, it's a massive infoleak.
Kill it. If somebody needs that data for debugging purposes, they
can bloody well expose it saner ways. Assuming anyone does debugging
of amiserial in the first place, that is.

the only user is very old setserial rc script and even that
(as far back as MCC Interim, AFAICS) doesn't actually fail -
just gives one message during the boot ("Cannot scan for wild
interrupts") and proceeds past that just fine.

Rework the defintion of struct siginfo so that the array padding
struct siginfo to SI_MAX_SIZE can be placed in a union along side of
the rest of the struct siginfo members. The result is that we no
longer need the __ARCH_SI_PREAMBLE_SIZE or SI_PAD_SIZE definitions.

The ia64 handling of failure to return from a signal frame has been trying
to set overlapping fields in struct siginfo since 2.3.43. The si_code
corresponds to the fields that were stomped (not the field that is
actually written), so I can not imagine a piece of userspace code
making sense of the signal frame if it looks closely.
In practice failure to return from a signal frame is a rare event that
almost never happens. Someone using an alternate signal stack to
recover and looking in detail is even more rare. So I presume no one
has ever noticed and reported this ia64 nonsense.
Sort this out by causing ia64 to use force_sig(SIGSEGV) like other architectures.

The ia64 handling of failure to setup a signal frame has been trying
to set overlapping fields in struct siginfo since 2.3.43. The si_pid
and si_uid fields are stomped when the si_addr field is set. The
si_code of SI_KERNEL indicates that si_pid and si_uid should be valid,
and that si_addr does not exist.
Being at odds with the definition of SI_KERNEL and with nothing to
indicate that this was a signal frame setup failure there is no way
for userspace to know that si_addr was filled out instead.
In practice failure to setup a signal frame is rare, and si_pid and
si_uid are always set to 0 when si_code is SI_KERNEL so I expect no
one has looked closely enough before to see this weirdness. Further
the only difference between force_sigsegv_info and the generic
force_sigsegv other than the return code is that force_sigsegv_info
stomps the si_uid and si_pid fields.
Remove the bug and simplify the code by using force_sigsegv in this
case just like other architectures.

error and should be removed.

There are four generations of utimes() syscalls: utime(), utimes(),
futimesat() and utimensat(), each one being a superset of the previous
one. For y2038 support, we have to add another one, which is the same
as the existing utimensat() but always passes 64-bit times_t based
timespec values.
There are currently 10 architectures that only use utimensat(), two
that use utimes(), futimesat() and utimensat() but not utime(), and 11
architectures that have all four, and those define __ARCH_WANT_SYS_UTIME
in order to get a sys_utime implementation. Since all the new
architectures only want utimensat(), moving all the legacy entry points
into a common __ARCH_WANT_SYS_UTIME guard simplifies the logic. Only alpha
and ia64 grow a tiny bit as they now also get an unused sys_utime(),
but it didn't seem worth the extra complexity of adding yet another
ifdef for those.

We have four generations of stat() syscalls:
- the oldstat syscalls that are only used on the older architectures
- the newstat family that is used on all 64-bit architectures but
lacked support for large files on 32-bit architectures.
- the stat64 family that is used mostly on 32-bit architectures to
replace newstat
- statx() to replace all of the above, adding 64-bit timestamps among
other things.
We already compile stat64 only on those architectures that need it,
but newstat is always built, including on those that don't reference
it. This adds a new __ARCH_WANT_NEW_STAT symbol along the lines of
__ARCH_WANT_OLD_STAT and __ARCH_WANT_STAT64 to control compilation of
newstat. All architectures that need it use an explict define, the
others now get a little bit smaller, and future architecture (including
64-bit targets) won't ever see it.

sufficiently expensive fork could prevent fork from every completing.
This contains the changes to remove the need for that restart.
This set of changes is split into several parts:
- The first part makes PIDTYPE_TGID a proper pid type instead

PIDTYPE_TGID enough so that in __send_signal where signals are
actually delivered we know if the signal is being sent to a a group
of processes or just a single process.

Commit 0bbf47eab4 ("ia64: use asm-generic/io.h") results in a BUG
while booting ia64. This is because asm-generic/io.h defines
PCI_IOBASE, which results in the function acpi_pci_root_remap_iospace()
doing a lot of unnecessary (and wrong) things.
I'd suggested an #if !CONFIG_IA64 in the functon, but Arnd suggested
keeping the fix inside the arch/ia64 tree.

Use new return type vm_fault_t for fault handler. For now, this is just
documenting that the function returns a VM_FAULT value rather than an
errno. Once all instances are converted, vm_fault_t will become a
distinct type.

The BTF conflicts were simple overlapping changes.
The virtio_net conflict was an overlap of a fix of statistics counter,
happening alongisde a move over to a bonafide statistics structure
rather than counting value on the stack.

Move the source of lib/Kconfig.debug and arch/$(ARCH)/Kconfig.debug to
the top-level Kconfig. For two architectures that means moving their
arch-specific symbols in that menu into a new arch Kconfig.debug file,
and for a few more creating a dummy file so that we can include it
unconditionally.
Also move the actual 'Kernel hacking' menu to lib/Kconfig.debug, where
it belongs.

Instead of duplicating the source statements in every architecture just
do it once in the toplevel Kconfig file.
Note that with this the inclusion of arch/$(SRCARCH/Kconfig moves out of
the top-level Kconfig into arch/Kconfig so that don't violate ordering
constraits while keeping a sensible menu structure.

Commit 2c4541e24c ("mm: use vma_init() to initialize VMAs on stack and
data segments") tried to initialize various left-over ad-hoc vma's
"properly", but actually made things worse for the temporary vma's used
for TLB flushing.
vma_init() doesn't actually initialize all of the vma, just a few
fields, so doing something like

was actually very bad: instead of having a nicely initialized vma with
every field but "vm_mm" zeroed, you'd have an entirely uninitialized vma
with only a couple of fields initialized. And they weren't even fields
that the code in question mostly cared about.
The flush_tlb_range() function takes a "struct vma" rather than a
"struct mm_struct", because a few architectures actually care about what
kind of range it is - being able to only do an ITLB flush if it's a
range that doesn't have data accesses enabled, for example. And all the
normal users already have the vma for doing the range invalidation.
But a few people want to call flush_tlb_range() with a range they just
made up, so they also end up using a made-up vma. x86 just has a
special "flush_tlb_mm_range()" function for this, but other
architectures (arm and ia64) do the "use fake vma" thing instead, and
thus got caught up in the vma_init() changes.
At the same time, the TLB flushing code really doesn't care about most
other fields in the vma, so vma_init() is just unnecessary and
pointless.
This fixes things by having an explicit "this is just an initializer for
the TLB flush" initializer macro, which is used by the arm/arm64/ia64
people who mis-use this interface with just a dummy vma.

Commit bfd40eaff5 ("mm: fix vma_is_anonymous() false-positives") made
newly allocated vma's have a dummy vm_ops field so that they wouldn't be
mistaken for anonymous mappings, and if you wanted an anonymous vma you
had to explicitly say so by calling "vma_set_anonymous()" on it.
However, it missed the two special vmas that ia64 processes have: the
register backing store and the NaT page. So they wouldn't actually act
like anonymous ranges, and page faults on them caused a SIGBUS rather
than the creation of a new anon page in them.
That obviously will make any ia64 binary very unhappy indeed, and the
boot fails early.

asm-generic/io.h provides a generic implementation of all I/O accessors,
which the architectures can override.
Since ia64 does not provide readsl/writesl etc, any driver using those
fails to build, and including asm-generic/io.h will provide the
missing interfaces, as well as any other future interfaces that get
added there. We need to #define a couple of symbols to themselves
in the ia64 to ensure that we use the ia64 specific version of those
rather than the generic one.
There should be no other effect than adding {read,write}s{b,w,l}()
as well as {in,out}s{b,w,l}_p(), which were also not provided
by ia64 but are provided by the generic header for historic reasons.

This rephrases the dependency to keep the ARM64 details out of the
shared Kconfig file, so Kconfig no longer gets confused by it.
For consistency, all three architectures that support ACPI now

they allow it. We still need the 'default x86', as each one
wants a different default: default-y on x86, default-n on arm64,
and always-y on ia64.

Since ia64 already uses memblock to register available physical memory it
is only required to move the calls to register_active_ranges() that wrap
memblock_add_node() earlier and replace bootmem memory reservations with
memblock_reserve(). Of course, all the code that find the place to put the
bootmem bitmap is removed.

When EFI memory map is traversed to determine the extents of each node, the
minimal and maximal PFNs are stored in the bootmem_data structures. The
same information ls later stored in the mem_data array of 'struct
early_node_data'.
Switch to using mem_data from the very beginning.

basic mm pointer.

The vm_area_struct is one of the most fundamental memory management
objects, but the management of it is entirely open-coded evertwhere,
ranging from allocation and freeing (using kmem_cache_[z]alloc and
kmem_cache_free) to initializing all the fields.
We want to unify this in order to end up having some unified
initialization of the vmas, and the first step to this is to at least
have basic allocation functions.
Right now those functions are literally just wrappers around the
kmem_cache_*() calls. This is a purely mechanical conversion:

Everywhere except in the pid array we distinguish between a tasks pid and
a tasks tgid (thread group id). Even in the enumeration we want that
distinction sometimes so we have added __PIDTYPE_TGID. With leader_pid
we almost have an implementation of PIDTYPE_TGID in struct signal_struct.
Add PIDTYPE_TGID as a first class member of the pid_type enumeration and
into the pids array. Then remove the __PIDTYPE_TGID special case and the
leader_pid in signal_struct.
The net size increase is just an extra pointer added to struct pid and
an extra pair of pointers of an hlist_node added to task_struct.
The effect on code maintenance is the removal of a number of special
cases today and the potential to remove many more special cases as
PIDTYPE_TGID gets used to it's fullest. The long term potential
is allowing zombie thread group leaders to exit, which will remove
a lot more special cases in the code.

To access these fields the code always has to go to group leader so
going to signal struct is no loss and is actually a fundamental simplification.
This saves a little bit of memory by only allocating the pid pointer array
once instead of once for every thread, and even better this removes a
few potential races caused by the fact that group_leader can be changed
by de_thread, while signal_struct can not.

This patch introduces SO_TXTIME. User space enables this option in
order to pass a desired future transmit time in a CMSG when calling
sendmsg(2). The argument to this socket option is a 8-bytes long struct
provided by the uapi header net_tstamp.h defined as:

Note that new fields were added to struct sock by filling a 2-bytes
hole found in the struct. For that reason, neither the struct size or
number of cachelines were altered.

The conditional inc/dec ops differ for atomic_t and atomic64_t:
- atomic_inc_unless_positive() is optional for atomic_t, and doesn't exist for atomic64_t.
- atomic_dec_unless_negative() is optional for atomic_t, and doesn't exist for atomic64_t.
- atomic_dec_if_positive is optional for atomic_t, and is mandatory for atomic64_t.
Let's make these consistently optional for both. At the same time, let's
clean up the existing fallbacks to use atomic_try_cmpxchg().
The instrumented atomics are updated accordingly.

Some of the atomics return the result of a test applied after the atomic
operation, and almost all architectures implement these as trivial
wrappers around the underlying atomic. Specifically:
* <atomic>_inc_and_test(v) is (<atomic>_inc_return(v) == 0)
* <atomic>_dec_and_test(v) is (<atomic>_dec_return(v) == 0)
* <atomic>_sub_and_test(i, v) is (<atomic>_sub_return(i, v) == 0)
* <atomic>_add_negative(i, v) is (<atomic>_add_return(i, v) < 0)
Rather than have these definitions duplicated in all architectures, with
minor inconsistencies in formatting and documentation, let's make these
operations optional, with default fallbacks as above. Implementations
must now provide a preprocessor symbol.
The instrumented atomics are updated accordingly.
Both x86 and m68k have custom implementations, which are left as-is,
given preprocessor symbols to avoid being overridden.
There should be no functional change as a result of this patch.

Architectures with atomic64_fetch_add_unless() provide a preprocessor
symbol if they do so, and all other architectures have trivial C
implementations of atomic64_add_unless() which are near-identical.
Let's unify the trivial definitions of atomic64_fetch_add_unless() in
<linux/atomic.h>, so that we always have both
atomic64_fetch_add_unless() and atomic64_add_unless() with less
boilerplate code.
This means that atomic64_add_unless() is always implemented in core
code, and the instrumented atomics are updated accordingly.

Several architectures these have a near-identical implementation based
on atomic_read() and atomic_cmpxchg() which we can instead define in
<linux/atomic.h>, so let's do so, using something close to the existing
x86 implementation with try_cmpxchg().
Where an architecture provides its own atomic_fetch_add_unless(), it
must define a preprocessor symbol for it. The instrumented atomics are
updated accordingly.
Note that arch/arc's existing atomic_fetch_add_unless() had redundant
barriers, as these are already present in its atomic_cmpxchg()
implementation.

We define a trivial fallback for atomic_inc_not_zero(), but don't do
the same for atomic64_inc_not_zero(), leading most architectures to
define the same boilerplate.
Let's add a fallback in <linux/atomic.h>, and remove the redundant
implementations. Note that atomic64_add_unless() is always defined in
<linux/atomic.h>, and promotes its arguments to the requisite types, so
we need not do this explicitly.

While __atomic_add_unless() was originally intended as a building-block
for atomic_add_unless(), it's now used in a number of places around the
kernel. It's the only common atomic operation named __atomic*(), rather
than atomic_*(), and for consistency it would be better named
atomic_fetch_add_unless().
This lack of consistency is slightly confusing, and gets in the way of
scripting atomics. Given that, let's clean things up and promote it to
an official part of the atomics API, in the form of
atomic_fetch_add_unless().
This patch converts definitions and invocations over to the new name,
including the instrumented version, using the following script:

Clear current_kprobe and enable preemption in kprobe
even if pre_handler returns !0.
This simplifies function override using kprobes.
Jprobe used to require to keep the preemption disabled and
keep current_kprobe until it returned to original function
entry. For this reason kprobe_int3_handler() and similar
arch dependent kprobe handers checks pre_handler result
and exit without enabling preemption if the result is !0.
After removing the jprobe, Kprobes does not need to
keep preempt disabled even if user handler returns !0
anymore.
But since the function override handler in error-inject
and bpf is also returns !0 if it overrides a function,
to balancing the preempt count, it enables preemption
and reset current kprobe by itself.
That is a bad design that is very buggy. This fixes
such unbalanced preempt-count and current_kprobes setting
in kprobes, bpf and error-inject.
Note: for powerpc and x86, this removes all preempt_disable
from kprobe_ftrace_handler because ftrace callbacks are
called under preempt disabled.

- Consolidation of softirq pending:
The softirq mask and its accessors/mutators have many implementations
scattered around many architectures. Most do the same things
consisting in a field in a per-cpu struct (often irq_cpustat_t)
accessed through per-cpu ops. We can provide instead a generic
efficient version that most of them can use. In fact s390 is the only
exception because the field is stored in lowcore.
- Support for level!?! triggered MSI (ARM)
Over the past couple of years, we've seen some SoCs coming up with
ways of signalling level interrupts using a new flavor of MSIs, where
the MSI controller uses two distinct messages: one that raises a
virtual line, and one that lowers it. The target MSI controller is in
charge of maintaining the state of the line.
This allows for a much simplified HW signal routing (no need to have
hundreds of discrete lines to signal level interrupts if you already
have a memory bus), but results in a departure from the current idea
the kernel has of MSIs.

By default, sparse assumes a 64bit machine when compiled on x86-64
and 32bit when compiled on anything else.
This can of course create all sort of problems for the other archs, like
issuing false warnings ('shift too big (32) for type unsigned long'), or
worse, failing to emit legitimate warnings.
Fix this by adding the -m32/-m64 flag, depending on CONFIG_64BIT,
to CHECKFLAGS in the main Makefile (and so for all archs).
Also, remove the now unneeded -m32/-m64 in arch specific Makefiles.

This way we have one central definition of it, and user can select it as
needed. The new option is not user visible, which is the behavior
it had in most architectures, with a few notable exceptions:
- On x86_64 and mips/loongson3 it used to be user selectable, but
defaulted to y. It now is unconditional, which seems like the right
thing for 64-bit architectures without guaranteed availablity of
IOMMUs.
- on powerpc the symbol is user selectable and defaults to n, but
many boards select it. This change assumes no working setup
required a manual selection, but if that turned out to be wrong
we'll have to add another select statement or two for the respective
boards.

Define this symbol if the architecture either uses 64-bit pointers or the
PHYS_ADDR_T_64BIT is set. This covers 95% of the old arch magic. We only
need an additional select for Xen on ARM (why anyway?), and we now always
set ARCH_DMA_ADDR_T_64BIT on mips boards with 64-bit physical addressing
instead of only doing it when highmem is set.

Most mainstream architectures are using 65536 entries, so lets stick to
that. If someone is really desperate to override it that can still be
done through <asm/dma-mapping.h>, but I'd rather see a really good
rationale for that.
dma_debug_init is now called as a core_initcall, which for many
architectures means much earlier, and provides dma-debug functionality
earlier in the boot process. This should be safe as it only relies
on the memory allocator already being available.

This was used by the ide, scsi and networking code in the past to
determine if they should bounce payloads. Now that the dma mapping
always have to support dma to all physical memory (thanks to swiotlb
for non-iommu systems) there is no need to this crude hack any more.

Using an si_code of 0 that aliases with SI_USER is clearly the wrong
thing todo, and causes problems in interesting ways.
The newly defined FPE_FLTUNK semantically appears to fit the bill so
use it instead.
Given recent experience in this area odds are it will not
break anything. Fixing it removes a hazard to kernel maintenance.

Call clear_siginfo to ensure every stack allocated siginfo is properly
initialized before being passed to the signal sending functions.
Note: It is not safe to depend on C initializers to initialize struct
siginfo on the stack because C is allowed to skip holes when
initializing a structure.
The initialization of struct siginfo in tracehook_report_syscall_exit
was moved from the helper user_single_step_siginfo into
tracehook_report_syscall_exit itself, to make it clear that the local
variable siginfo gets fully initialized.
In a few cases the scope of struct siginfo has been reduced to make it
clear that siginfo siginfo is not used on other paths in the function
in which it is declared.
Instances of using memset to initialize siginfo have been replaced
with calls clear_siginfo for clarity.

The ia64 ipcbuf/msgbuf/sembuf/shmbuf header files are all identical
to the version from asm-generic.
This patch removes the files and replaces them with 'generic-y'
statements as part of the y2038 changes. While ia64 no longer has
a compat mode and doesn't need the file any more, it seem nicer
to clean this up anyway.

We have a couple of files that try to include asm/compat.h on
architectures where this is available. Those should generally use the
higher-level linux/compat.h file, but that in turn fails to include
asm/compat.h when CONFIG_COMPAT is disabled, unless we can provide
that header on all architectures.
This adds the asm/compat.h for all remaining architectures to
simplify the dependencies.
Architectures that are getting removed in linux-4.17 are not changed
here, to avoid needless conflicts with the removal patches. Those
architectures are broken by this patch, but we have already shown
that they have no users.

Using this helper allows us to avoid the in-kernel calls to the
sys_mmap_pgoff() syscall. The ksys_ prefix denotes that this function is
meant as a drop-in replacement for the syscall. In particular, it uses the
same calling convention as sys_mmap_pgoff().
This patch is part of a series which removes in-kernel calls to syscalls.
On this basis, the syscall entry path can be streamlined. For details, see

If MSI or MSI-X is enabled, the device uses that. It uses INTx only if
both MSI and MSI-X are disabled (see PCIe r4.0, sec 7.7.1.2), so if a
device already has MSI or MSI-X enabled, there's no need to set up its
legacy INTx interrupt.
bba6f6fc68 ("[PATCH] MSI-X: fix resume crash") changed the cris, frv,
x86, and ia64 arches to skip INTx setup when MSI is enabled. The cris and
frv arches have since been removed.
16cf0ebc35 ("x86/PCI: Do not use interrupt links for devices using
MSI-X") extended that by changing x86 to also skip INTx setup when MSI-X is
enabled.
Change ia64 to skip INTx setup when either MSI or MSI-X is enabled by
applying the logic from 16cf0ebc35 to ia64 as well as x86.

At the point of sysfs callback, the call to gup is
done without mmap_sem (or any lock for that matter).
This is racy. As such, use the get_user_pages_fast()
alternative and safely avoid taking the lock, if possible.

While we've only seen inlining problems with atomic_sub_return(),
the other atomic operations could have the same problem. Convert all
remaining operations to use the same solution as atomic_sub_return().
