Like e65cc194f7 this patch enables 64bit DMA
for the AHCI SATA controller of a board that has the SB600 southbridge. In
this case though we're enabling 64bit DMA for the Asus M3A motherboard. It
is a new enough board that all of the BIOS releases since the initial

libata EH intentionally left a port frozen if it failed
ata_eh_reset(). The intention was avoiding continuous loop of resets
when the controller or attached device is flaky and reporting spurious
hotplug events. Once port enters this state, it can be recovered with
manual rescan, which seemed reasonable.
However, outside of my convoluted test setup, there have been very few
reports justifying this choice while there have been more cases where
the automatic freezing of the port after hotplug attempt of a faulty
device caused confusion and led to unnecessary resets.
This patch changes the behavior so that the port is thawed after reset
failure. This change doesn't necessarily solve but makes it easier
and more intuitive to work around hotplug related problems
(ie. re-pluggin or power cycling the device) as reported in the
followings.

It's not so much an error as a warning about normal Marvell crazines.
So don't use KERN_ERR that ends up spamming the console even in quiet
mode, it's not _that_ critical.
Explained by Jeff:
"Long explanation, it's a mess:
Marvell took standard AHCI, and bastardized it to include a weird mode
whereby PATA devices appear inside the AHCI DMA and interrupt
infrastructure you're familiar with.
So, PATA devices appear via pata_marvell driver, using basic legacy
IDE programming interface. But SATA devices, which might also be
attached to this chip, either work in under-performing mode or
simply don't work at all (e.g. newer 6 Gbps devices or port
multiplier attachments, NCQ, ...)
On the other hand, 'ahci' driver loads and works with the chip's
attached SATA devices quite beautifully, but is completely unable to
drive any attached PATA devices, due to the Marvell-specific
PATA-under-AHCI interface.
The "masking port_map 0x7 -> 0x3" message is the ahci driver "hiding"
the PATA port(s) from itself, making sure it will only drive the SATA
ports it knows how to drive."

To work around controllers which can't properly plug events while
reset, ata_eh_reset() clears error states and ATA_PFLAG_EH_PENDING
after reset but before RESET is marked done. As reset is the final
recovery action and full verification of devices including onlineness
and classfication match is done afterwards, this shouldn't lead to
lost devices or missed hotplug events.
Unfortunately, it forgot to thaw the port when clearing EH_PENDING, so
if the condition happens after resetting an empty port, the port could
be left frozen and EH will end without thawing it, making the port
unresponsive to further hotplug events.
Thaw if the port is frozen after clearing EH_PENDING. This problem is
reported by Bruce Stenning in the following thread.

The old IDE cmd64x checks the status of the CNTRL register to see if
the ports are enabled before probing them. pata_cmd64x doesn't do
this, which causes a HPMC on parisc when it tries to poke at the
secondary port because apparently the BAR isn't wired up (and a
non-responding piece of memory causes a HPMC).
Fix this by porting the CNTRL register port detection logic from IDE
cmd64x. In addition, following converns from Alan Cox, add a check to
see if a mobility electronics bridge is the immediate parent and forgo
the check if it is (prevents problems on hotplug controllers).

Right at the moment, the libata error handler is incredibly
monolithic. This makes it impossible to use from composite drivers
like libsas and ipr which have to handle error themselves in the first
instance.
The essence of the change is to split the monolithic error handler
into two components: one which handles a queue of ata commands for
processing and the other which handles the back end of readying a
port. This allows the upper error handler fine grained control in
calling libsas functions (and making sure they only get called for ATA
commands whose lower errors have been fixed up).

The SCSI host eh_cmd_q should be protected by the host lock (not the
port lock). This probably doesn't matter that much at the moment,
since we try to serialise the add and eh pieces, but it might matter
in future for more convenient error handling. Plus this switches
libata to the standard eh pattern where you lock, remove from the cmd
queue to a local list and unlock and then operate on the local list.

For historical reasons, libsas uses the scsi host lock as the ata port
lock, and libata always uses the ata host. For the old eh, this was
largely irrelevant since the two locks were never mixed inside the
code. However, the new eh has a case where it nests acquisition of
the host lock inside the port lock (this does look rather deadlock
prone). Obviously this would be an instant deadlock if the port lock
were the host lock, so switch the libsas paths to use the ata host
lock as well.

The function ata_sas_port_init() has always really done its own thing.
However, as a precursor to moving to the libata new eh, it has to be
properly using the standard libata scan paths. This means separating
the current libata scan paths into pieces which can be shared with
libsas and pieces which cant (really just the async call and the host
scan).

ata_eh_analyze_serror() suppresses hotplug notifications if LPM is
being used because LPM generates spurious hotplug events. It compared
whether link->lpm_policy was different from ATA_LPM_MAX_POWER to
determine whether LPM is enabled; however, this is incorrect as for
drivers which don't implement LPM, lpm_policy is always
ATA_LPM_UNKNOWN. This disabled hotplug detection for all drivers
which don't implement LPM.
Fix it by comparing whether lpm_policy is greater than
ATA_LPM_MAX_POWER.

ata_pio_sectors() expects buffer for each sector to be contained in a
single page; otherwise, it ends up overrunning the first page. This
is achieved by setting queue DMA alignment. If sector_size is smaller
than PAGE_SIZE and all buffers are sector_size aligned, buffer for
each sector is always contained in a single page.
This wasn't applied to ATAPI devices but IDENTIFY_PACKET is executed
as ATA_PROT_PIO and thus uses ata_pio_sectors(). Newer versions of
udev issue IDENTIFY_PACKET with unaligned buffer triggering the
problem and causing oops.
This patch fixes the problem by setting sdev->sector_size to
ATA_SECT_SIZE on ATATPI devices and always setting DMA alignment to
sector_size. While at it, add a warning for the unlikely but still
possible scenario where sector_size is larger than PAGE_SIZE, in which
case the alignment wouldn't be enough.

The meaning of CONFIG_EMBEDDED has long since been obsoleted; the option
is used to configure any non-standard kernel with a much larger scope than
only small devices.
This patch renames the option to CONFIG_EXPERT in init/Kconfig and fixes
references to the option throughout the kernel. A new CONFIG_EMBEDDED
option is added that automatically selects CONFIG_EXPERT when enabled and
can be used in the future to isolate options that should only be
considered for embedded systems (RISC architectures, SLOB, etc).
Calling the option "EXPERT" more accurately represents its intention: only
expert users who understand the impact of the configuration changes they
are making should enable it.

CONFIG_HAVE_PATA_PLATFORM, by virtue of where its defined, has a
dependency on CONFG_ATA and CONFIG_ATA_SFF. This causes Kconfig

than adjust all the architectures.

Low level drivers may behave differently depending on the current
link->lpm_policy. During ata_eh_set_lpm(), DIPM enable commands are
issued after the successful completion of ap->ops->set_lpm(), which
means that the controller is already in the target state. This causes
DIPM enable commands to be processed with mismatching controller power
state and link->lpm_policy value.
In ahci, link->lpm_policy is used to ignore certain PHY events if LPM
is enabled; however, as DIPM commands are issued with stale
link->lpm_policy, they sometimes end up triggering these conditions
and get aborted leading to LPM configuration failure.
Fix it by updating link->lpm_policy before issuing DIPM enable
commands.

ata_qc_complete() contains special handling for certain commands. For
example, it schedules EH for device revalidation after certain
configurations are changed. These shouldn't be applied to EH
commands but they were.
In most cases, it doesn't cause an actual problem because EH doesn't
issue any command which would trigger special handling; however, ACPI
can issue such commands via _GTF which can cause weird interactions.
Restructure ata_qc_complete() such that EH commands are always passed
on to __ata_qc_complete().

Move the mid-layer's ->queuecommand() invocation from being locked
with the host lock to being unlocked to facilitate speeding up the
critical path for drivers who don't need this lock taken anyway.
The patch below presents a simple SCSI host lock push-down as an
equivalent transformation. No locking or other behavior should change
with this patch. All existing bugs and locking orders are preserved.
Additionally, add one parameter to queuecommand,
struct Scsi_Host *
and remove one parameter from queuecommand,
void (*done)(struct scsi_cmnd *)
Scsi_Host* is a convenient pointer that most host drivers need anyway,
and 'done' is redundant to struct scsi_cmnd->scsi_done.
Minimal code disturbance was attempted with this change. Most drivers
needed only two one-line modifications for their host lock push-down.

ATA devices don't send D2H Reg FIS after an successful ATA PIO data-in

preceding PIO Setup FIS. Update ahci_qc_fill_rtf() such that it takes
TF + E_Status from PIO Setup FIS after a successful ATA PIO data-in

Without this patch, result_tf for such a command is filled with the
content of the previous D2H Reg FIS which belongs to a previous

In libata, the non-EH code paths should always take and release
ap->lock explicitly when accessing hardware or shared data structures.
However, once EH is active, it's assumed that the port is owned by EH
and EH methods don't explicitly take ap->lock unless race from irq
handler or other code paths are expected. However, libata EH didn't
guarantee exclusion among EHs for ports of the same host. IOW,
multiple EHs may execute in parallel on multiple ports of the same
controller.
In many cases, especially in SATA, the ports are completely
independent of each other and this doesn't cause problems; however,
there are cases where different ports share the same resource, which
lead to obscure timing related bugs such as the one fixed by commit
213373cf (ata_piix: fix locking around SIDPR access).
This patch implements exclusion among EHs of the same host. When EH
begins, it acquires per-host EH ownership by calling ata_eh_acquire().
When EH finishes, the ownership is released by calling
ata_eh_release(). EH ownership is also released whenever the EH
thread goes to sleep from ata_msleep() or explicitly and reacquired
after waking up.
This ensures that while EH is actively accessing the hardware, it has
exclusive access to it while allowing EHs to interleave and progress
in parallel as they hit waiting stages, which dominate the time spent
in EH. This achieves cross-port EH exclusion without pervasive and
fragile changes while still allowing parallel EH for the most part.

The current LPM implementation has the following issues.
* Operation order isn't well thought-out. e.g. HIPM should be
configured after IPM in SControl is properly configured. Not the
other way around.
* Suspend/resume paths call ata_lpm_enable/disable() which must only
be called from EH context directly. Also, ata_lpm_enable/disable()
were called whether LPM was in use or not.
* Implementation is per-port when it should be per-link. As a result,
it can't be used for controllers with slave links or PMP.
* LPM state isn't managed consistently. After a link reset for
whatever reason including suspend/resume the actual LPM state would
be reset leaving ap->lpm_policy inconsistent.
* Generic/driver-specific logic boundary isn't clear. Currently,
libahci has to mangle stuff which libata EH proper should be
handling. This makes the implementation unnecessarily complex and
fragile.
* Tied to ALPM. Doesn't consider DIPM only cases and doesn't check
whether the device allows HIPM.
* Error handling isn't implemented.
Given the extent of mismatch with the rest of libata, I don't think
trying to fix it piecewise makes much sense. This patch reimplements
LPM support.
* The new implementation is per-link. The target policy is still
port-wide (ap->target_lpm_policy) but all the mechanisms and states
are per-link and integrate well with the rest of link abstraction
and can work with slave and PMP links.
* Core EH has proper control of LPM state. LPM state is reconfigured
when and only when reconfiguration is necessary. It makes sure that
LPM state is reset when probing for new device on the link.
Controller agnostic logic is now implemented in libata EH proper and
driver implementation only has to deal with controller specifics.
* Proper error handling. LPM config failure is attributed to the
device on the link and LPM is disabled for the link if it fails
repeatedly.
* ops->enable/disable_pm() are replaced with single ops->set_lpm()
which takes @policy and @hints. This simplifies driver specific
implementation.

Currently, sata_fsl, mv and nv call ata_qc_complete() multiple times
from their interrupt handlers to indicate completion of NCQ commands.
This limits the visibility the libata core layer has into how commands
are being executed and completed, which is necessary to support IRQ
expecting in generic way. libata already has an interface to complete
multiple commands at once - ata_qc_complete_multiple() which ahci and
sata_sil24 already use.
This patch updates the three drivers to use ata_qc_complete_multiple()
too and updates comments on ata_qc_complete[_multiple]() regarding
their usages with NCQ completions. This change not only provides
better visibility into command execution to the core layer but also
simplifies low level drivers.
* sata_fsl: It already builds done_mask. Conversion is straight
forward.
* sata_mv: mv_process_crpb_response() no longer checks for illegal
completions, it just returns whether the tag is completed or not.
mv_process_crpb_entries() builds done_mask from it and passes it to
ata_qc_complete_multiple() which will check for illegal completions.
* sata_nv adma: Similar to sata_mv. nv_adma_check_cpb() now just
returns the tag status and nv_adma_interrupt() builds done_mask from
it and passes it to ata_qc_complete_multiple().
* sata_nv swncq: It already builds done_mask. Drop unnecessary
illegal transition checks and call ata_qc_complete_multiple().
In the long run, it might be a good idea to make ata_qc_complete()
whine if called when multiple NCQ commands are in flight.

libata depends on scsi_host_template for module reference counting and
sht's should be owned by each low level driver. During libahci split,

unloadable even while they're being actively used.

This allows to more easily trace the type of I/O from the filesystem

missing in the requests: BIO_RW_UNPLUG and BIO_RW_AHEAD. Also I've

SIDPR window registers are shared across ports and as each access is
done in two steps, accesses to different ports under EH may race.
This primarily is caused by incorrect host locking in EH context and
should be fixed by defining locking requirements for each EH operation
which can be used during EH and enforcing them but for now work around
the problem by adding a dedicated SIDPR lock and grabbing it for each
SIDPR access.

But it causes the following (harmless, luckily) section mismatch:

from the variable ahci_driver to the function .init.text:ahci_probe()
This patch removes the ahci_driver.probe assignment, thus fixes
the warning.
p.s. Note that there's another patch[1] from Rene Bolldorf that
tried to solve the same issue by __refdata annotation. __refdata
says that this reference is actually OK, but in fact it is not OK,
because dereferencing .probe() will cause problems. So the proper
fix is to remove the assignment.

libata has two concurrency related limitations.
a. ata_wq which is used for polling PIO has single thread per CPU. If
there are multiple devices doing polling PIO on the same CPU, they
can't be executed simultaneously.
b. ata_aux_wq which is used for SCSI probing has single thread. In
cases where SCSI probing is stalled for extended period of time
which is possible for ATAPI devices, this will stall all probing.
#a is solved by increasing maximum concurrency of ata_wq. Please note
that polling PIO might be used under allocation path and thus needs to
be served by a separate wq with a rescuer.
#b is solved by using the default wq instead and achieving exclusion
via per-port mutex.

implemented stopping DMA engines on empty ports but it used single

Implement ata_scsi_unlock_native_capacity() which will be called
through SCSI layer when block layer notices that partitions on a
device extend beyond the end of the device. It requests EH to unlock
HPA, waits for completion and returns the current device capacity.
This allows libata to unlock HPA on demand instead of having to decide
whether to unlock upfront. Unlocking on demand is safer than
unlocking by upfront because some BIOSes write private data to the
area beyond HPA limit. This was suggested by Ben Hutchings.

On mcp55, nIEN gets stuck once set and liteon blueray rom iHOS104-08
violates ATA specification and fails to set I on D2H Reg FIS if nIEN
is set when the command was issued. When the other party is following
the spec, both devices can work fine but when the two flaws are put

mcp55 has its own IRQ masking mechanism and there's no reason to mess

while he changed the macio device code to use that, he left the match
table pointer in struct macio_driver and didn't update drivers to use

This completes the change by moving all drivers to setup the "new"
one, removing all traces of the old one, and while at it (since it
changes the exact same locations), I also remove two other duplicates

There are ATAPI devices which raise AN when hit by commands issued by
open(). This leads to infinite loop of AN -> MEDIA_CHANGE uevent ->
udev open() to check media -> AN.
Both ACS and SerialATA standards don't define in which case ATAPI
devices are supposed to raise or not raise AN. They both list media
insertion event as a possible use case for ATAPI ANs but there is no
clear description of what constitutes such events. As such, it seems
a bit too naive to export ANs directly to userland as MEDIA_CHANGE
events without further verification (which should behave similarly to
windows as it apparently is the only thing that some hardware vendors
are testing against).
This patch adds libata.atapi_an module parameter and disables ATAPI AN
by default for now.

Make BMDMA optional depending on new config variable CONFIG_ATA_BMDMA.
In Kconfig, drivers are grouped into five groups - non-SFF native, SFF
w/ custom DMA interface, SFF w/ BMDMA, PIO-only SFF, and generic
fallback / legacy ones. Kconfig and Makefile are reorganized
according to the groups and ordered alphabetically inside each group.
ata_ioports.bmdma_addr and ata_port.bmdma_prd[_dma] are put into
CONFIG_ATA_BMDMA, as are all bmdma related ops, variables and
functions.
This increase the binary size slightly when BMDMA is enabled but on
both native-only and PIO-only configurations the size is slightly
reduced. Either way, the size difference is insignificant. This
change is more meaningful to signify the separation between SFF and
BMDMA and as a tool to verify the separation.

drivers don't need them. Rename to ata_bmdma_[dumb_]qc_prep() and

drivers are not BMDMA drivers and don't need to call BMDMA qc_prep
functions. Calls to ata_sff_qc_prep() in the two drivers are removed.

Some of error handling logic in ata_sff_error_handler() and all of
ata_sff_post_internal_cmd() are for BMDMA. Create
ata_bmdma_error_handler() and ata_bmdma_post_internal_cmd() and move
BMDMA part into those.
While at it, change DMA protocol check to ata_is_dma(), fix
post_internal_cmd to call ap->ops->bmdma_stop instead of directly
calling ata_bmdma_stop() and open code hardreset selection so that
ata_std_error_handler() doesn't have to know about sff hardreset.
As these two functions are BMDMA specific, there's no reason to check
for bmdma_addr before calling bmdma methods if the protocol of the
failed command is DMA. sata_mv and pata_mpc52xx now don't need to set
.post_internal_cmd to ATA_OP_NULL and pata_icside and sata_qstor don't
need to set it to their bmdma_stop routines.
ata_sff_post_internal_cmd() becomes noop and is removed.
This fixes p3 described in clean-up-BMDMA-initialization patch.

port_task is tightly bound to the standard SFF PIO HSM implementation.
Using it for any other purpose would be error-prone and there's no
such user and if some drivers need such feature, it would be much
better off using its own. Move it inside CONFIG_ATA_SFF and rename it
to sff_pio_task.
The only function which is exposed to the core layer is
ata_sff_flush_pio_task() which is renamed from ata_port_flush_task()
and now also takes care of resetting hsm_task_state to HSM_ST_IDLE,
which is possible as it's now specific to PIO HSM.

When BMDMA initialization failed or BMDMA was not available for
whatever reason, bmdma_addr was left at zero and used as an indication
that BMDMA shouldn't be used. This leads to the following problems.
p1. For BMDMA drivers which don't use traditional BMDMA register,
ata_bmdma_mode_filter() incorrectly inhibits DMA modes. Those
drivers either have to inherit from ata_sff_port_ops or clear
->mode_filter explicitly.
p2. non-BMDMA drivers call into BMDMA PRD table allocation. It
doesn't actually allocate PRD table if bmdma_addr is not
initialized but is still confusing.
p3. For BMDMA drivers which don't use traditional BMDMA register, some
methods might not be invoked as expected (e.g. bmdma_stop from
ata_sff_post_internal_cmd()).
p4. SFF drivers w/ custom DMA interface implement noop BMDMA ops
worrying libata core might call into one of them.
These problems are caused by the muddy line between SFF and BMDMA and
the assumption that all BMDMA controllers initialize bmdma_addr.
This patch fixes p1 and p2 by removing the bmdma_addr assumption and
moving prd allocation to BMDMA port start. Later patches will fix the
remaining issues.
This patch improves BMDMA initialization such that
* When BMDMA register initialization fails, falls back to PIO instead
of failing. ata_pci_bmdma_init() never fails now.
* When ata_pci_bmdma_init() falls back to PIO, it clears
ap->mwdma_mask and udma_mask instead of depending on
ata_bmdma_mode_filter(). This makes ata_bmdma_mode_filter()
unnecessary thus resolving p1.
* ata_port_start() which actually is BMDMA specific is moved to
ata_bmdma_port_start(). ata_port_start() and ata_sff_port_start()
are killed.
* ata_sff_port_start32() is moved and renamed to
ata_bmdma_port_start32().
Drivers which no longer call into PRD table allocation are...
pdc_adma, sata_inic162x, sata_qstor, sata_sx4, pata_cmd640 and all
drivers which inherit from ata_sff_port_ops.
pata_icside sets ->port_start to ATA_OP_NULL as it doesn't need PRD
but is a BMDMA controller and doesn't have custom port_start like
other such controllers.
Note that with the previous patch which makes all and only BMDMA
drivers inherit from ata_bmdma_port_ops, this change doesn't break
drivers which need PRD table.

1. pata_cmd640 is PIO only. Inherit from sff.
2. pata_macio is BMDMA. Inherit from bmdma and drop explicit
bmdma_mode_filter() setting.
3. In sata_mv, unlike mv5, mv6 is BMDMA. Inherit from bmdma and
don't clear ->post_internal_cmd().
4. bf54x and icside are quasi-BMDMA controllers which don't use the
standard BMDMA registers so they don't initialize bmdma_addr and
inherit from sff to avoid the default mode_filter which disables
DMA modes if bmdma_addr is not initialized.
For 2 and 3, this patch makes the drivers explicitly specify
->mode_filter to ATA_OP_NULL while inheriting from ata_bmdma_port_ops.
These will be removed by the next patch.
This patch makes all and only BMDMA drivers inherit from
ata_bmdma_port_ops to ease further SFF/BMDMA separation.

ATA_FLAG_DISABLED is only used by drivers which don't use
->error_handler framework and is largely broken. Its only meaningful
function is to make irq handlers skip processing if the flag is set,
which is largely useless and even harmful as it makes those ports more
likely to cause IRQ storms.
Kill ATA_FLAG_DISABLED and makes the callers disable attached devices
instead. ata_port_probe() and ata_port_disable() which manipulate the
flag are also killed.
This simplifies condition check in IRQ handlers. While updating IRQ
handlers, remove ap NULL check as libata guarantees consecutive port
allocation (unoccupied ports are initialized with dummies) and

until they're reset. Clear IRQ iff the port is being thawed.

Now, with the introduction of the sff_set_devctl() method, we can
use it in sff_irq_on() method too -- that way its implementations
in 'pata_bf54x' and 'pata_scc' become virtually identical to
ata_sff_irq_on(). The sff_irq_on() method now becomes quite
superfluous, and the only reason not to remove it completely is
the existence of the 'pata_octeon_cf' driver which implements it
as an empty function. Just make the method optional then, with
ata_sff_irq_on() becoming generic taskfile-bound function, still
global for the 'pata_bf54x' driver to be able to call it from its
thaw() and postreset() methods.
While at it, make the sff_irq_on() method and ata_sff_irq_on() return

The set of libata's taskfile access methods is clearly incomplete as
it lacks a method to write to the device control register -- which
forces drivers like 'pata_bf54x' and 'pata_scc' to implement more
"high level" (and more weighty) methods like freeze() and postreset().
So, introduce the optional sff_set_devctl() method which the drivers
only have to implement if the standard iowrite8() can't be used (just
like the existing sff_check_altstatus() method) and make use of it
in the freeze() and postreset() method implementations (I could also
have used it in softreset() method but it also reads other taskfile
registers without using tf_read() making that quite pointless);
this makes freeze() method implementations in the 'pata_bf54x' and
'pata_scc' methods virtually identical to ata_sff_freeze(), so we
can get rid of them completely.

There are some SATA devices which take relatively long to get out of
0xff status after reset. In libata, this timeout is determined by
ATA_TMOUT_FF_WAIT. Quantum GoVault is the worst requring about 2s for
reliable detection. However, because 2s 0xff timeout can introduce
rather long spurious delay during boot, libata has been compromising
at the next longest timeout of 800ms for HHD424020F7SV00 iVDR drive.
Now that parallel scan is in place for common drivers, libata can
afford 2s 0xff timeout. Use 2s 0xff timeout if parallel scan is
enabled.
Please note that the chance of spurious wait is pretty slim w/ working
SCR access so this will only affect SATA controllers w/o SCR access
which isn't too common these days.
Please read the following thread for more information on the GoVault
drive.

In 2009, While running "cache read" performance test of drives behind
SII PMP we encountered a "all 5 drives" timeout on more than 30% of the
machines under test. This patch reduces the rate by a factor of about 70.
Low enough that we didn't care to further investigate the issue.
Performance impact with any sort of "normal" use was ~2%+ CPU and less
than 1% throughput degradation. Worst case impact (cached read) was
6% IOPS reduction. This is with NCQ off (q=1) but I believe FIS based
switching enabled in the SATA driver.
The patch disables "Early ACK" in the 3726 port multiplier.
"Early ACK" is issued when device sends a FIS to the host (via PMP)
and the PMP sends an ACK immediately back to the device - well before
the host gets the response. Under worst case IOPs load (cached read
test) and more than 2 PMPs connected to a 4-port SATA controller,
I suspect the time to service all of the PMPs is exceeding the PMPs
ability to keep track of outstanding FIS it owes the Host. Reducing
the number of PMPs to 2 (or 1) reduces the frequency by several orders
of magnitude. Kudos to Gwendal for initial debugging of this issue.

I've prepared a totally simple patch that, if I did it and measured it
correctly, reduces the text size as of the ppc-6xx-size command of
pata-mpc52xx by more than 10%, by reducing the rodata size from 0x4a4
to 0x17e bytes. This is simply done by changing the data types of the
ATA timing constants.
If you are interested at all, and it's worth the trouble, here the
details:
ppc-6xx-size:
text data bss dec hex filename
old: 6532 1068 0 7600 1db0 pata-mpc52xx.o
new: 5718 1068 0 6786 1a82 pata-mpc52xx.o

right now. Clean it up such that,
* board_id_* now live in a separate enum board_ids and numbers are

* Board IDs assigned to features are separated from the ones assigned

* For NV MCPs, define per-generation alias board_ids and assign
matching aliases in the pci id table. This makes mcp_linux, 67-73

Currently the driver uses host->iomap to store all the iomapped BARs
of a PCI device (while AHCI devices actually use just a single memory
window).
We're going to teach AHCI to work with non-PCI buses, so there are two
options to make this work:
1. "fake" host->iomap array for non-PCI devices, and place the needed
address at iomap[AHCI_PCI_BAR];
2. Get rid of host->iomap usage, instead introduce a private mmio

Instead of the old pcmcia_request_irq() interface, drivers may now
choose between:
- calling request_irq/free_irq directly. Use the IRQ from *p_dev->irq.
- use pcmcia_request_irq(p_dev, handler_t); the PCMCIA core will
clean up automatically on calls to pcmcia_disable_device() or
device ejection.
- drivers still not capable of IRQF_SHARED (or not telling us so) may
use the deprecated pcmcia_request_exclusive_irq() for the time
being; they might receive a shared IRQ nonetheless.

percpu.h -> slab.h dependency is about to be removed. Prepare for
this change by updating users of gfp and slab facilities include those
headers directly instead of assuming availability. As this conversion
needs to touch large number of source files, the following script is
used as the basis of conversion.
http://userweb.kernel.org/~tj/misc/slabh-sweep.py
The script does the followings.
* Scan files for gfp and slab usages and update includes such that
only the necessary includes are there. ie. if only gfp is used,
gfp.h, if slab is used, slab.h.
* When the script inserts a new include, it looks at the include
blocks and try to put the new include such that its order conforms
to its surrounding. It's put in the include block which contains
core kernel includes, in the same order that the rest are ordered -
alphabetical, Christmas tree, rev-Xmas-tree or at the end if there
doesn't seem to be any matching order.
* If the script can't find a place to put a new include (mostly
because the file doesn't have fitting include block), it prints out
an error message indicating which .h file needs to be added to the
file.
The conversion was done in the following steps.
1. The initial automatic conversion of all .c files updated slightly
over 4000 files, deleting around 700 includes and adding ~480 gfp.h
and ~3000 slab.h inclusions. The script emitted errors for ~400
files.
2. Each error was manually checked. Some didn't need the inclusion,
some needed manual addition while adding it to implementation .h or
embedding .c file was more appropriate for others. This step added
inclusions to around 150 files.
3. The script was run again and the output was compared to the edits
from #2 to make sure no file was left behind.
4. Several build tests were done and a couple of problems were fixed.
e.g. lib/decompress_*.c used malloc/free() wrappers around slab
APIs requiring slab.h to be added manually.
5. The script was run on all .h files but without automatically
editing them as sprinkling gfp.h and slab.h inclusions around .h
files could easily lead to inclusion dependency hell. Most gfp.h
inclusion directives were ignored as stuff from gfp.h was usually
wildly available and often used in preprocessor macros. Each
slab.h inclusion directive was examined and added manually as
necessary.
6. percpu.h was updated not to include slab.h.
7. Build test were done on the following configurations and failures
were fixed. CONFIG_GCOV_KERNEL was turned off for all tests (as my
distributed build env didn't work with gcov compiles) and a few
more options had to be turned off depending on archs to make things
build (like ipr on powerpc/64 which failed due to missing writeq).
* x86 and x86_64 UP and SMP allmodconfig and a custom test config.
* powerpc and powerpc64 SMP allmodconfig
* sparc and sparc64 SMP allmodconfig
* ia64 SMP allmodconfig
* s390 SMP allmodconfig
* alpha SMP allmodconfig
* um on x86_64 SMP allmodconfig
8. percpu.h modifications were reverted so that it could be applied as
a separate patch and serve as bisection point.
Given the fact that I had only a couple of failures from tests on step
6, I'm fairly confident about the coverage of this conversion patch.
If there is a breakage, it's likely to be something in one of the arch
headers which should be easily discoverable easily on most builds of
the specific arch.

Commit 27943620cb introduced spurious
IRQ handling but it has a race condition where valid completion can be
lost while trying to clear spurious IRQ leading to occassional command
timeouts.
This patch improves SFF interrupt handler such that
1. Once BMDMA HSM is stopped, the condition is never considered
spurious. As there's no way to resume stopped BMDMA HSM, if device
status doesn't agree with BMDMA status, the only way out is
aborting the command (otherwise, it will just end up timing out).
2. ap->ops->sff_check_status() can be safely called to clear spurious
device IRQ as it atomically returns completion status but BMDMA IRQ
status can't be cleared in safe way if command is in flight. After
a spurious IRQ, call ap->ops->sff_irq_clear() only if the
respective device is idle and retry completion if
sff_check_status() indicates command completion.
Please note that ata_piix uses bmdma_status for sff_irq_check() and #2
won't weaken spurious IRQ handling even with in-flight command because
if bmdma_status indicates IRQ pending but device status is not on
spurious check, the next IRQ handler invocation will abort the command
due to #1.

Before only the timings for master were set. Datasheet can be found
here: ftp://ftp.vtbridge.org/Docs/Storage/DS_VT6421A_100_CCPL.PDF
Surprisingly, a slave drive works without this patch. According to the
datasheet, the controller by default derives the DMA mode from the
Set Features command issued to a drive. Not sure about the PIO
timings, though. The real problem is that the timings for the master
effectively are the ones tuned for the slave. If these support
different UDMA-settings, there is trouble, especially when the slave
supports a higher UDMA than the master.
Anyhow, using the same mechanism for both master and slave seems like
a good idea.

Traditional IDE interface sucks in that it doesn't have a reliable IRQ
pending bit, so if the controller raises IRQ while the driver is
expecting it not to, the IRQ won't be cleared and eventually the IRQ
line will be killed by interrupt subsystem. Some controllers have
non-standard mechanism to indicate IRQ pending so that this condition
can be detected and worked around.
This patch adds an optional operation ->sff_irq_check() which will be
called for each port from the ata_sff_interrupt() if an unexpected
interrupt is received. If the operation returns %true,
->sff_check_status() and ->sff_irq_clear() will be cleared for the
port. Note that this doesn't mark the interrupt as handled so it
won't prevent IRQ subsystem from killing the IRQ if this mechanism
fails to clear the spurious IRQ.
This patch also implements ->sff_irq_check() for ata_piix. Note that
this adds slight overhead to shared IRQ operation as IRQs which are
destined for other controllers will trigger extra register accesses to
check whether IDE interrupt is pending but this solves rare screaming
IRQ cases and for some curious reason also helps weird BIOS related
glitch on Samsung n130 as reported in bko#14314.

Mike Cui reported that his system with an NVIDIA MCP79 (aka MCP7A)

2.6.32 now enables the FPDMA auto-activate optimization in the ahci

this appears to be a chipset bug. Since MCP79 is a fairly recent
