Merge tag 'lsm-pr-20221212' of git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/pcmoore/lsm
Pull lsm updates from Paul Moore:
- Improve the error handling in the device cgroup such that memory
allocation failures when updating the access policy do not
potentially alter the policy.
- Some minor fixes to reiserfs to ensure that it properly releases
LSM-related xattr values.
- Update the security_socket_getpeersec_stream() LSM hook to take
sockptr_t values.
Previously the net/BPF folks updated the getsockopt code in the
network stack to leverage the sockptr_t type to make it easier to
pass both kernel and __user pointers, but unfortunately when they did
so they didn't convert the LSM hook.
While there was/is no immediate risk by not converting the LSM hook,
it seems like this is a mistake waiting to happen so this patch
proactively does the LSM hook conversion.
- Convert vfs_getxattr_alloc() to return an int instead of a ssize_t
and cleanup the callers. Internally the function was never going to
return anything larger than an int and the callers were doing some
very odd things casting the return value; this patch fixes all that
and helps bring a bit of sanity to vfs_getxattr_alloc() and its
callers.
- More verbose, and helpful, LSM debug output when the system is booted
with "lsm.debug" on the command line. There are examples in the
commit description, but the quick summary is that this patch provides
better information about which LSMs are enabled and the ordering in
which they are processed.
- General comment and kernel-doc fixes and cleanups.

Commit 57fe60df62 ("reiserfs: add atomic addition of selinux attributes
during inode creation") defined reiserfs_security_free() to free the name
and value of a security xattr allocated by the active LSM through
security_old_inode_init_security(). However, this function is not called
in the reiserfs code.
Thus, add a call to reiserfs_security_free() whenever
reiserfs_security_init() is called, and initialize value to NULL, to avoid
to call kfree() on an uninitialized pointer.
Finally, remove the kfree() for the xattr name, as it is not allocated
anymore.

The current way of setting and getting posix acls through the generic
xattr interface is error prone and type unsafe. The vfs needs to
interpret and fixup posix acls before storing or reporting it to
userspace. Various hacks exist to make this work. The code is hard to
understand and difficult to maintain in it's current form. Instead of
making this work by hacking posix acls through xattr handlers we are
building a dedicated posix acl api around the get and set inode
operations. This removes a lot of hackiness and makes the codepaths
easier to maintain. A lot of background can be found in [1].
The current inode operation for getting posix acls takes an inode
argument but various filesystems (e.g., 9p, cifs, overlayfs) need access
to the dentry. In contrast to the ->set_acl() inode operation we cannot
simply extend ->get_acl() to take a dentry argument. The ->get_acl()
inode operation is called from:
acl_permission_check()
-> check_acl()
-> get_acl()
which is part of generic_permission() which in turn is part of
inode_permission(). Both generic_permission() and inode_permission() are
called in the ->permission() handler of various filesystems (e.g.,
overlayfs). So simply passing a dentry argument to ->get_acl() would
amount to also having to pass a dentry argument to ->permission(). We
should avoid this unnecessary change.
So instead of extending the existing inode operation rename it from
->get_acl() to ->get_inode_acl() and add a ->get_acl() method later that
passes a dentry argument and which filesystems that need access to the
dentry can implement instead of ->get_inode_acl(). Filesystems like cifs
which allow setting and getting posix acls but not using them for
permission checking during lookup can simply not implement
->get_inode_acl().
This is intended to be a non-functional change.

Since some filesystem rely on the dentry being available to them when
setting posix acls (e.g., 9p and cifs) they cannot rely on set acl inode
operation. But since ->set_acl() is required in order to use the generic
posix acl xattr handlers filesystems that do not implement this inode
operation cannot use the handler and need to implement their own
dedicated posix acl handlers.
Update the ->set_acl() inode method to take a dentry argument. This
allows all filesystems to rely on ->set_acl().
As far as I can tell all codepaths can be switched to rely on the dentry
instead of just the inode. Note that the original motivation for passing
the dentry separate from the inode instead of just the dentry in the
xattr handlers was because of security modules that call
security_d_instantiate(). This hook is called during
d_instantiate_new(), d_add(), __d_instantiate_anon(), and
d_splice_alias() to initialize the inode's security context and possibly
to set security.* xattrs. Since this only affects security.* xattrs this
is completely irrelevant for posix acls.

filldir_t instances (directory iterators callbacks) used to return 0 for
"OK, keep going" or -E... for "stop". Note that it's *NOT* how the
error values are reported - the rules for those are callback-dependent
and ->iterate{,_shared}() instances only care about zero vs. non-zero
(look at emit_dir() and friends).
So let's just return bool ("should we keep going?") - it's less confusing
that way. The choice between "true means keep going" and "true means
stop" is bikesheddable; we have two groups of callbacks -
do something for everything in directory, until we run into problem
and
find an entry in directory and do something to it.
The former tended to use 0/-E... conventions - -E<something> on failure.
The latter tended to use 0/1, 1 being "stop, we are done".
The callers treated anything non-zero as "stop", ignoring which
non-zero value did they get.
"true means stop" would be more natural for the second group; "true
means keep going" - for the first one. I tried both variants and
the things like
if allocation failed
something = -ENOMEM;
return true;
just looked unnatural and asking for trouble.

Merge tag 'fs.idmapped.vfsuid.v5.20' of git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/brauner/linux
Pull fs idmapping updates from Christian Brauner:
"This introduces the new vfs{g,u}id_t types we agreed on. Similar to
k{g,u}id_t the new types are just simple wrapper structs around
regular {g,u}id_t types.
They allow to establish a type safety boundary in the VFS for idmapped
mounts preventing confusion betwen {g,u}ids mapped into an idmapped
mount and {g,u}ids mapped into the caller's or the filesystem's
idmapping.
An initial set of helpers is introduced that allows to operate on
vfs{g,u}id_t types. We will remove all references to non-type safe
idmapped mounts helpers in the very near future. The patches do
already exist.
This converts the core attribute changing codepaths which become
significantly easier to reason about because of this change.
Just a few highlights here as the patches give detailed overviews of
what is happening in the commit messages:
- The kernel internal struct iattr contains type safe vfs{g,u}id_t
values clearly communicating that these values have to take a given
mount's idmapping into account.
- The ownership values placed in struct iattr to change ownership are
identical for idmapped and non-idmapped mounts going forward. This
also allows to simplify stacking filesystems such as overlayfs that
change attributes In other words, they always represent the values.
- Instead of open coding checks for whether ownership changes have
been requested and an actual update of the inode is required we now
have small static inline wrappers that abstract this logic away
removing a lot of code duplication from individual filesystems that
all open-coded the same checks"

Now that we introduced new infrastructure to increase the type safety
for filesystems supporting idmapped mounts port the first part of the
vfs over to them.
This ports the attribute changes codepaths to rely on the new better
helpers using a dedicated type.
Before this change we used to take a shortcut and place the actual
values that would be written to inode->i_{g,u}id into struct iattr. This
had the advantage that we moved idmappings mostly out of the picture
early on but it made reasoning about changes more difficult than it
should be.
The filesystem was never explicitly told that it dealt with an idmapped
mount. The transition to the value that needed to be stored in
inode->i_{g,u}id appeared way too early and increased the probability of
bugs in various codepaths.
We know place the same value in struct iattr no matter if this is an
idmapped mount or not. The vfs will only deal with type safe
vfs{g,u}id_t. This makes it massively safer to perform permission checks
as the type will tell us what checks we need to perform and what helpers
we need to use.
Fileystems raising FS_ALLOW_IDMAP can't simply write ia_vfs{g,u}id to
inode->i_{g,u}id since they are different types. Instead they need to
use the dedicated vfs{g,u}id_to_k{g,u}id() helpers that map the
vfs{g,u}id into the filesystem.
The other nice effect is that filesystems like overlayfs don't need to
care about idmappings explicitly anymore and can simply set up struct
iattr accordingly directly.

Port the is_quota_modification() and dqout_transfer() helper to type
safe vfs{g,u}id_t. Since these helpers are only called by a few
filesystems don't introduce a new helper but simply extend the existing
helpers to pass down the mount's idmapping.
Note, that this is a non-functional change, i.e. nothing will have
happened here or at the end of this series to how quota are done! This
a change necessary because we will at the end of this series make
ownership changes easier to reason about by keeping the original value
in struct iattr for both non-idmapped and idmapped mounts.
For now we always pass the initial idmapping which makes the idmapping
functions these helpers call nops.
This is done because we currently always pass the actual value to be
written to i_{g,u}id via struct iattr. While this allowed us to treat
the {g,u}id values in struct iattr as values that can be directly
written to inode->i_{g,u}id it also increases the potential for
confusion for filesystems.
Now that we are have dedicated types to prevent this confusion we will
ultimately only map the value from the idmapped mount into a filesystem
value that can be written to inode->i_{g,u}id when the filesystem
actually updates the inode. So pass down the initial idmapping until we
finished that conversion at which point we pass down the mount's
idmapping.
Since struct iattr uses an anonymous union with overlapping types as
supported by the C standard, filesystems that haven't converted to
ia_vfs{g,u}id won't see any difference and things will continue to work
as before. In other words, no functional changes intended with this
change.

quite some years ago. Linux distributions moved away from it towards
other filesystems such as btrfs, xfs, or ext4. To reduce maintenance
burden on cross filesystem changes (such as new mount API, iomap, folios
...) let's add a deprecation notice when the filesystem is mounted and
schedule its removal to 2025.

Block devices do not, in general, report congestion any more, so this
congestion_wait() is effectively just a sleep.
It isn't entirely clear what is being waited for, but as we only wait
when j_async_throttle is elevated, it seems reasonable to stop waiting
when j_async_throttle becomes zero - or after the same timeout.
So change to use wait_event_event_timeout() for waiting, and
wake_up_var() to signal an end to waiting.

Pull Kbuild updates from Masahiro Yamada:
- Add -s option (strict mode) to merge_config.sh to make it fail when
any symbol is redefined.
- Show a warning if a different compiler is used for building external
modules.
- Infer --target from ARCH for CC=clang to let you cross-compile the
kernel without CROSS_COMPILE.
- Make the integrated assembler default (LLVM_IAS=1) for CC=clang.
- Add <linux/stdarg.h> to the kernel source instead of borrowing
<stdarg.h> from the compiler.
- Add Nick Desaulniers as a Kbuild reviewer.
- Drop stale cc-option tests.
- Fix the combination of CONFIG_TRIM_UNUSED_KSYMS and CONFIG_LTO_CLANG
to handle symbols in inline assembly.
- Show a warning if 'FORCE' is missing for if_changed rules.

Add a rcu argument to the ->get_acl() callback to allow
get_cached_acl_rcu() to call the ->get_acl() method in the next patch.

While verifying the leaf item that we read from the disk, reiserfs
doesn't check the directory items, this could cause a crash when we
read a directory item from the disk that has an invalid deh_location.
This patch adds a check to the directory items read from the disk that
does a bounds check on deh_location for the directory entries. Any
directory entry header with a directory entry offset greater than the
item length is considered invalid.

syzbot reported divide error in reiserfs.
The problem was in incorrect journal 1st block.
Syzbot's reproducer manualy generated wrong superblock
with incorrect 1st block. In journal_init() wasn't
any checks about this particular case.
For example, if 1st journal block is before superblock
1st block, it can cause zeroing important superblock members
in do_journal_end().

The section "19) Editor modelines and other cruft" in
Documentation/process/coding-style.rst clearly says, "Do not include any
of these in source files."
I recently receive a patch to explicitly add a new one.
Let's do treewide cleanups, otherwise some people follow the existing code
and attempt to upstream their favoriate editor setups.
It is even nicer if scripts/checkpatch.pl can check it.
If we like to impose coding style in an editor-independent manner, I think
editorconfig (patch [1]) is a saner solution.
