fix directory locking scheme on rename
broken in 6.5; we really can't lock two unrelated directories without holding ->s_vfs_rename_mutex first and in case of same-parent rename of a subdirectory 6.5 ends up doing just that. sysctl-6.8-rc1
To help make the move of sysctls out of kernel/sysctl.c not incur a size penalty sysctl has been changed to allow us to not require the sentinel, the final empty element on the sysctl array. Joel Granados has been doing all this work. On the v6.6 kernel we got the major infrastructure changes required to support this. For v6.7 we had all arch/ and drivers/ modified to remove the sentinel. For v6.8-rc1 we get a few more updates for fs/ directory only. The kernel/ directory is left but we'll save that for v6.9-rc1 as those patches are still being reviewed. After that we then can expect also the removal of the no longer needed check for procname == NULL. Let us recap the purpose of this work: - this helps reduce the overall build time size of the kernel and run time memory consumed by the kernel by about ~64 bytes per array - the extra 64-byte penalty is no longer inncurred now when we move sysctls out from kernel/sysctl.c to their own files Thomas Weißschuh also sent a few cleanups, for v6.9-rc1 we expect to see further work by Thomas Weißschuh with the constificatin of the struct ctl_table. Due to Joel Granados's work, and to help bring in new blood, I have suggested for him to become a maintainer and he's accepted. dlm for 6.8
This set cleans up the interface between nfs lockd and dlm, which is handling nfs file locking for gfs2 and ocfs2. fs: convert block_write_full_page to block_write_full_folio
Convert the function to be compatible with writepage_t so that it can be passed to write_cache_pages() by blkdev. This removes a call to compound_head(). We can also remove the function export as both callers are built-in. fs: Remove the now superfluous sentinel elements from ctl_table array
This commit comes at the tail end of a greater effort to remove the empty elements at the end of the ctl_table arrays (sentinels) which will reduce the overall build time size of the kernel and run time memory bloat by ~64 bytes per sentinel (further information Link : https://lore.kernel.org/all/ZO5Yx5JFogGi%2FcBo@bombadil.infradead.org/) Remove sentinel elements ctl_table struct. Special attention was placed in making sure that an empty directory for fs/verity was created when CONFIG_FS_VERITY_BUILTIN_SIGNATURES is not defined. The VFS will not be locking moved directory if its parent does not change. Change ocfs2 rename code to avoid touching renamed directory if its parent does not change as without locking that can corrupt the filesystem. dlm: implement EXPORT_OP_ASYNC_LOCK
This patch is activating the EXPORT_OP_ASYNC_LOCK export flag to signal lockd that both filesystems are able to handle async lock requests. The cluster filesystems gfs2 and ocfs2 will redirect their lock requests to DLMs plock implementation that can handle async lock requests. ocfs2: replace BUG_ON() at ocfs2_num_free_extents() with ocfs2_error()
The BUG_ON() at ocfs2_num_free_extents() handles the error that l_tree_deepth of leaf extent block just read form disk is invalid. This error is mostly caused by file system metadata corruption on the disk. There is no need to call BUG_ON() to handle such errors. We can return error code, since the caller can deal with errors from ocfs2_num_free_extents(). Also, we should make the file system read-only to avoid the damage from expanding. Therefore, BUG_ON() is removed and ocfs2_error() is called instead. fs: ocfs2: replace strlcpy with sysfs_emit
strlcpy() reads the entire source buffer first. This read may exceed the destination size limit. This is both inefficient and can lead to linear read overflows if a source string is not NUL-terminated [1]. In an effort to remove strlcpy() completely [2], replace strlcpy() here with sysfs_emit(). Direct replacement is safe here since its ok for `kernel_param_ops.get()` to return -errno [3]. ocfs2: Annotate struct ocfs2_slot_info with __counted_by
Prepare for the coming implementation by GCC and Clang of the __counted_by attribute. Flexible array members annotated with __counted_by can have their accesses bounds-checked at run-time checking via CONFIG_UBSAN_BOUNDS (for array indexing) and CONFIG_FORTIFY_SOURCE (for strcpy/memcpy-family functions). As found with Coccinelle[1], add __counted_by for struct ocfs2_slot_info. Cleanup shouldn't be duplicated between sb->put_super() as sb->put_super() is only called if sb->s_root has been set aka when the filesystem has been successfully born (SB_BORN). That complexity should be avoided. This also means that block devices are to be closed in sb->kill_sb() instead of sb->put_super(). More details in the lower section. (3) Make it possible to lookup or create a superblock before opening block devices There's a subtle dependency on (2) as some filesystems did rely on fill_super() to be called in order to correctly clean up sb->s_fs_info. All these filesystems have been fixed. (4) Switch most filesystem to follow the same logic as the generic mount code now does as outlined in (3). (5) Use the superblock as the holder of the block device. We can now easily go back from block device to owning superblock. (6) Export and extend the generic fs_holder_ops and use them as holder ops everywhere and remove the filesystem specific holder ops. This uses the 31st bit of the ctime tv_nsec field to indicate that something has queried the inode for the mtime or ctime. When this flag is set, on the next mtime or ctime update, the kernel will fetch a fine-grained timestamp instead of the usual coarse-grained one. As POSIX generally mandates that when the mtime changes, the ctime must also change the kernel always stores normalized ctime values, so only the first 30 bits of the tv_nsec field are ever used. Filesytems can opt into this behavior by setting the FS_MGTIME flag in the fstype. Filesystems that don't set this flag will continue to use coarse-grained timestamps. Various preparatory changes, fixes and cleanups are included: - Fixup all relevant places where POSIX requires updating ctime together with mtime. This is a wide-range of places and all maintainers provided necessary Acks. - Add new accessors for inode->i_ctime directly and change all callers to rely on them. fs: pass the request_mask to generic_fillattr
generic_fillattr just fills in the entire stat struct indiscriminately today, copying data from the inode. There is at least one attribute (STATX_CHANGE_COOKIE) that can have side effects when it is reported, and we're looking at adding more with the addition of multigrain timestamps. Add a request_mask argument to generic_fillattr and have most callers just pass in the value that is passed to getattr. Have other callers (e.g. ksmbd) just pass in STATX_BASIC_STATS. Also move the setting of STATX_CHANGE_COOKIE into generic_fillattr. ocfs2: stop using bdev->bd_super for journal error logging
All ocfs2 journal error handling and logging is based on buffer_heads, and the owning inode and thus super_block can be retrieved through bh->b_assoc_map->host. Switch to using that to remove the last users of bdev->bd_super. vfs: get rid of old '->iterate' directory operation
All users now just use '->iterate_shared()', which only takes the directory inode lock for reading. Filesystems that never got convered to shared mode now instead use a wrapper that drops the lock, re-takes it in write mode, calls the old function, and then downgrades the lock back to read mode. This way the VFS layer and other callers no longer need to care about filesystems that never got converted to the modern era. The filesystems that use the new wrapper are ceph, coda, exfat, jfs, ntfs, ocfs2, overlayfs, and vboxsf. Honestly, several of them look like they really could just iterate their directories in shared mode and skip the wrapper entirely, but the point of this change is to not change semantics or fix filesystems that haven't been fixed in the last 7+ years, but to finally get rid of the dual iterators. fs: add CONFIG_BUFFER_HEAD
Add a new config option that controls building the buffer_head code, and select it from all file systems and stacking drivers that need it. For the block device nodes and alternative iomap based buffered I/O path is provided when buffer_head support is not enabled, and iomap needs a a small tweak to define the IOMAP_F_BUFFER_HEAD flag to 0 to not call into the buffer_head code when it doesn't exist. Otherwise this is just Kconfig and ifdef changes.
