ACPICA commit: a73b66c6aa1846d055bb6390d9c9b9902f7d804d
Subject: Add "has handler" flag to event/gpe status interfaces.
This change adds a new flag, ACPI_EVENT_FLAGS_HAS_HANDLER to the
acpi_get_event_status and acpi_get_gpe_status external interfaces. It
is set if the event/gpe currently has a handler associated with it.
This patch contains the code to rename ACPI_EVENT_FLAG_HANDLE to
ACPI_EVENT_FLAG_HAS_HANDLER, and the corresponding updates of its usages.

all of them will be switched over to "wakeup" mode in

Pull ACPI and power management updates from Rafael Wysocki:
"Features-wise, to me the most important this time is a rework of
wakeup interrupts handling in the core that makes them work
consistently across all of the available sleep states, including
suspend-to-idle. Many thanks to Thomas Gleixner for his help with
this work.
Second is an update of the generic PM domains code that has been in
need of some care for quite a while. Unused code is being removed, DT
support is being added and domains are now going to be attached to
devices in bus type code in analogy with the ACPI PM domain. The
majority of work here was done by Ulf Hansson who also has been the
most active developer this time.
Apart from this we have a traditional ACPICA update, this time to
upstream version 20140828 and a few ACPI wakeup interrupts handling
patches on top of the general rework mentioned above. There also are
several cpufreq commits including renaming the cpufreq-cpu0 driver to
cpufreq-dt, as this is what implements generic DT-based cpufreq
support, and a new DT-based idle states infrastructure for cpuidle.
In addition to that, the ACPI LPSS driver is updated, ACPI support for
Apple machines is improved, a few bugs are fixed and a few cleanups
are made all over.
Finally, the Adaptive Voltage Scaling (AVS) subsystem now has a tree
maintained by Kevin Hilman that will be merged through the PM tree.
Numbers-wise, the generic PM domains update takes the lead this time
with 32 non-merge commits, second is cpufreq (15 commits) and the 3rd

The ACPI GPE wakeup from suspend-to-idle is currently based on using
the IRQF_NO_SUSPEND flag for the ACPI SCI, but that is problematic
for a couple of reasons. First, in principle the ACPI SCI may be
shared and IRQF_NO_SUSPEND does not really work well with shared
interrupts. Second, it may require the ACPI subsystem to special-case
the handling of device notifications depending on whether or not
they are received during suspend-to-idle in some places which would
lead to fragile code. Finally, it's better the handle ACPI wakeup
interrupts consistently with wakeup interrupts from other sources.
For this reason, remove the IRQF_NO_SUSPEND flag from the ACPI SCI
and use enable_irq_wake()/disable_irq_wake() with it instead, which
requires two additional platform hooks to be added to struct
platform_freeze_ops.

Since acpi_hw_enable_wakeup_gpe_block() is currently always called
after disabling all GPEs, it can actually write zeros to all
non-wakeup enable bits unconditionally.
That will be useful going forward for disabling runtime GPEs and
enabling wakeup GPEs in one go instead of doing that in two steps
(disable runtime and enable wakeup) which in theory may lead to a
loss of a wakeup event.

The _DOD method lists which video output device is currently attached so
we should only care about them and ignore others. An user recently
reported that there are two acpi_video interfaces appeared on his system
and one of them doesn't work. From the acpidump, it is found that there
are more than one video output devices that have _BCM control method but
the _DOD lists only one of them. So this patch checks if the video output
device is in the _DOD list and will not create backlight device if it is
not in the list. Also, we consider the broken _DOD case(reflected by the
video->attached_count is 0) and do not change behaviour for those broken
_DOD systems.

ACPI device enumeration mechanism changed a lot since 3.16-rc1.
ACPI device objects with _HID will be enumerated to platform bus by default.
For the existing PNP drivers that probe the PNPACPI devices, the device ids
are listed explicitly in drivers/acpi/acpi_pnp.c.
But ACPI folks will continue their effort on shrinking this id list by
converting the PNP drivers to platform drivers, for the devices that don't
belong to PNP bus in nature.

Apple hardware queries _OSI("Darwin") in order to determine whether the
system is running OS X, and changes firmware behaviour based on the
answer. The most obvious difference in behaviour is that Thunderbolt
hardware is forcibly powered down unless the system is running OS X. The
obvious solution would be to simply add Darwin to the list of supported
_OSI strings, but this causes problems.
Recent Apple hardware includes two separate methods for checking _OSI
strings. The first will check whether Darwin is supported, and if so
will exit. The second will check whether Darwin is supported, but will
then continue to check for further operating systems. If a further
operating system is found then later firmware code will assume that the
OS is not OS X. This results in the unfortunate situation where the
Thunderbolt controller is available at boot time but remains powered
down after suspend.
The easiest way to handle this is to special-case it in the
Linux-specific OSI handling code. If we see Darwin, we should answer
true and then disable all other _OSI vendor strings.
The next problem is that the Apple PCI _OSC method has the following
code:
if (LEqual (0x01, OSDW ()))
if (LAnd (LEqual (Arg0, GUID), NEXP)
(do stuff)
else
(fail)
NEXP is a value in high memory and is presumably under the control of
the firmware. No methods sets it. The methods that are called in the "do
stuff" path are dummies. Unless there's some additional firmware call in
early boot, there's no way for this call to succeed - and even if it
does, it doesn't do anything.
The easiest way to handle this is simply to ignore it. We know which
flags would be set, so just set them by hand if the platform is running
in Darwin mode.

The kernel used to contain two functions for length-delimited,
case-insensitive string comparison, strnicmp with correct semantics
and a slightly buggy strncasecmp. The latter is the POSIX name, so
strnicmp was renamed to strncasecmp, and strnicmp made into a wrapper
for the new strncasecmp to avoid breaking existing users.
To allow the compat wrapper strnicmp to be removed at some point in

Changes to correct several GPIO issues:
1) The update_rule in a GPIO field definition is now ignored;
a read-modify-write operation is never performed for GPIO fields.
(Internally, this means that the field assembly/disassembly
code is completely bypassed for GPIO.)
2) The Address parameter passed to a GPIO region handler is
now the bit offset of the field from a previous Connection()
operator. Thus, it becomes a "Pin Number Index" into the
Connection() resource descriptor.
3) The bit_width parameter passed to a GPIO region handler is
now the exact bit width of the GPIO field. Thus, it can be
interpreted as "number of pins".
Overall, we can now say that the region handler interface
to GPIO handlers is a raw "bit/pin" addressed interface, not
a byte-addressed interface like the system_memory handler interface.

On some systems (Asus T100 in particular) there are strict ordering
dependencies between LPSS devices with respect to power management
that break if they suspend/resume asynchronously.
In theory it should be possible to follow those dependencies in the
async suspend/resume case too (the ACPI tables tell as that the
dependencies are there), but since we're missing infrastructure
for that at the moment, disable async suspend/resume for all of
the LPSS devices for the time being.

Commit 46394fd01 (ACPI / hotplug: Move container-specific code out of
the core) removed the generation of "online" uevents for containers,
because "add" uevents are now generated for them automatically when
container system devices are registered. However, there are user
space tools that need to be notified when the container and all of
its children have been enumerated, which doesn't happen any more.
For this reason, add a mechanism allowing "online" uevents to be
generated for ACPI containers after enumerating the container along
with all of its children.

This reverts commit 232de51437 ("ACPI / battery: fix wrong value of
capacity_now reported when fully charged")
There is nothing wrong or unexpected about 'capacity_now' increasing above
the last 'full_charge_capacity' value. Different charging cycles will cause
'full_charge_capacity' to vary, both up and down. Good battery firmwares
will update 'full_charge_capacity' when the current charging cycle is
complete, increasing it if necessary. It might even go above
'design_capacity' on a fresh and healthy battery.
Capping 'capacity_now' to 'full_charge_capacity' is plain wrong, and
printing a warning if this doesn't happen to match the 'design_capacity'
is both annoying and terribly wrong.
This results in bogus warnings on perfectly working systems/firmwares:
[Firmware Bug]: battery: reported current charge level (39800) is higher than reported maximum charge level (39800).
and wrong values being reported for 'capacity_now' and
'full_charge_capacity' after the warning has been triggered.

Capping 'capacity_now' to 'full_charge_capacity' is plain wrong. If this
is necessary to work around some buggy firmware, then the workaround needs
protection against being applied to working firmwares.
Good battery firmwares will allow 'capacity_now' to increase above
'full_charge_capacity', and will update the latter when the battery
is fully charged. By capping 'capacity_now' we lose accurate capacity
reporting until charging is complete whenever 'full_charge_capacity'
needs to be increased.

Fujitsu backlight and hotkey devices have ACPI drivers.
The PNP MODULE_DEVICE_TABLE in fujitsu-laptop driver is just used as an
indicator for module autoloading, but this is wrong because what we
need is ACPI module device table instead, because the driver is probing
ACPI devices.
Thus remove those IDs from ACPI PNP scan handler list as we don't
have a PNP driver for them, and convert the fujitsu-laptop PNP

There is platform refusing to respond QR_EC when SCI_EVT isn't set
which is Acer Aspire V5-573G.
By disallowing QR_EC to be issued before the previous one has been
completed we are able to reduce the possibilities to trigger issues on
such platforms.
Note that this fix can only reduce the occurrence rate of this issue, but
this issue may still occur when such a platform doesn't clear SCI_EVT
before or immediately after completing the previous QR_EC transaction.
This patch cannot fix the CLEAR_ON_RESUME quirk which also relies on
the assumption that the platforms are able to respond even when SCI_EVT
isn't set.
But this patch is still useful as it can help to reduce the number of

There is a platform refusing to respond QR_EC when SCI_EVT isn't set
(Acer Aspire V5-573G).
Currently, we rely on the behaviour that the EC firmware can respond
something (for example, 0x00 to indicate "no outstanding events") to
QR_EC even when SCI_EVT is not set, but the reporter has complained
about AC/battery pluging/unpluging and video brightness change delay
on that platform.
This is because the work item that has issued QR_EC has to wait until
timeout in this case, and the _Qxx method evaluation work item queued
after QR_EC one is delayed.
It sounds reasonable to fix this issue by:
1. Implementing SCI_EVT sanity check before issuing QR_EC in the EC
driver's main state machine.
2. Moving QR_EC issuing out of the work queue used by _Qxx evaluation
to a seperate IRQ handling thread.
This patch fixes this issue using solution 1.
By disallowing QR_EC to be issued when SCI_EVT isn't set, we are able to
handle such platform in the EC driver's main state machine. This patch
enhances the state machine in this way to survive with such malfunctioning
EC firmware.
Note that this patch can also fix CLEAR_ON_RESUME quirk which also relies

Currently, notify callbacks for fixed button events are run from
interrupt context. That is not necessary and after commit 0bf6368ee8
(ACPI / button: Add ACPI Button event via netlink routine) it causes
netlink routines to be called from interrupt context which is not
correct.
Also, that is different from non-fixed device events (including
non-fixed button events) whose notify callbacks are all executed from
process context.
For the above reasons, make fixed button device notify callbacks run
in process context which will avoid the deadlock when using netlink
to report button events to user space.

We generally don't allow ACPI drivers to bind to ACPI device objects
that companion "physical" device objects are created for to avoid
situations in which two different drivers may attempt to handle one
device at the same time. Recent ACPI device enumeration rework
extended that approach to ACPI PNP devices by starting to use a scan
handler for enumerating them. However, we previously allowed ACPI
drivers to bind to ACPI device objects with existing PNP device
companions and changing that led to functional regressions on some
systems.
For this reason, add a special check for PNP devices in
acpi_device_probe() so that ACPI drivers can bind to ACPI device
objects having existing PNP device companions as before.

Pull x86/apic updates from Thomas Gleixner:
"This is a major overhaul to the x86 apic subsystem consisting of the
following parts:
- Remove obsolete APIC driver abstractions (David Rientjes)
- Use the irqdomain facilities to dynamically allocate IRQs for
IOAPICs. This is a prerequisite to enable IOAPIC hotplug support,
and it also frees up wasted vectors (Jiang Liu)
- Misc fixlets.
Despite the hickup in Ingos previous pull request - caused by the
missing fixup for the suspend/resume issue reported by Borislav - I
strongly recommend that this update finds its way into 3.17. Some
history for you:
This is preparatory work for physical IOAPIC hotplug. The first
attempt to support this was done by Yinghai and I shot it down because
it just added another layer of obscurity and complexity to the already
existing mess without tackling the underlying shortcomings of the
current implementation.
After quite some on- and offlist discussions, I requested that the
design of this functionality must use generic infrastructure, i.e.
irq domains, which provide all the mechanisms to dynamically map linux
interrupt numbers to physical interrupts.
Jiang picked up the idea and did a great job of consolidating the
existing interfaces to manage the x86 (IOAPIC) interrupt system by
utilizing irq domains.
The testing in tip, Linux-next and inside of Intel on various machines
did not unearth any oddities until Borislav exposed it to one of his
oddball machines. The issue was resolved quickly, but unfortunately
the fix fell through the cracks and did not hit the tip tree before
Ingo sent the pull request. Not entirely Ingos fault, I also assumed
that the fix was already merged when Ingo asked me whether he could
send it.
Nevertheless this work has a proper design, has undergone several
rounds of review and the final fallout after applying it to tip and
integrating it into Linux-next has been more than moderate. It's the
ground work not only for IOAPIC hotplug, it will also allow us to move
the lowlevel vector allocation into the irqdomain hierarchy, which
will benefit other architectures as well. Patches are posted already,
but they are on hold for two weeks, see below.
I really appreciate the competence and responsiveness Jiang has shown
in course of this endavour. So I'm sure that any fallout of this will
be addressed in a timely manner.
FYI, I'm vanishing for 2 weeks into my annual kids summer camp kitchen
duty^Wvacation, while you folks are drooling at KS/LinuxCon :) But HPA
will have a look at the hopefully zero fallout until I'm back"

Now IOAPIC driver dynamically allocates IRQ numbers for IOAPIC pins.
We need to keep IRQ assignment for PCI devices during suspend/hibernation,
otherwise it may cause failure of suspend/hibernation due to:
1) Device driver calls pci_enable_device() to allocate an IRQ number
and register interrupt handler on the returned IRQ.
2) Device driver's suspend callback calls pci_disable_device() and
release assigned IRQ in turn.
3) Device driver's resume callback calls pci_enable_device() to
allocate IRQ number again. A different IRQ number may be assigned
by IOAPIC driver this time.
4) Now the hardware delivers interrupt to the new IRQ but interrupt
handler is still registered against the old IRQ, so it breaks
suspend/hibernation.
To fix this issue, we keep IRQ assignment during suspend/hibernation.
Flag pci_dev.dev.power.is_prepared is used to detect that
pci_disable_device() is called during suspend/hibernation.

This change adds support to disassemble a UUID back to the original
ToUUID operator. It will detect a UUID within a standard AML Buffer.
Also, a description of the UUID is emitted for "known" UUIDs, defined
as UUIDs that are defined in the ACPI specification.
Since this is a change for disassembler which is not shipped in the
Linux kernel, the Linux kernel is not affected.

The primary dependency is that GHES uses the x86 NMI for hardware
error notification and MCE for memory error handling. These patches
remove that dependency.
Other APEI features such as error reporting via external IRQ, error
serialization, or error injection, do not require changes to use them
on non-x86 architectures.
The following patch set eliminates the APEI Kconfig x86 dependency
by making these changes:
- treat NMI notification as GHES architecture - HAVE_ACPI_APEI_NMI
- group and wrap around #ifdef CONFIG_HAVE_ACPI_APEI_NMI code which
is used only for NMI path
- identify architectural boxes and abstract it accordingly (tlb flush and MCE)
- rework ioremap for both IRQ and NMI context
NMI code is kept in ghes.c file since NMI and IRQ context are tightly coupled.
Note, these patches introduce no functional changes for x86. The NMI notification
feature is hard selected for x86. Architectures that want to use this
feature should also provide NMI code infrastructure.

Logical processors with APIC ID values of 255 and greater are
required to have a Processor Device object and must convey the
processor's APIC information to OSPM using the Processor Local
X2APIC structure, but not until ACPI 5.1, X2APIC structure was
not supported in _MAT method.
_MAT is needed for CPU hotplug and system with more than 255
CPUs will definitely need X2APIC structure, so add its support
in map_mat_entry() to make it possible to get local x2apic id

The ACPI device enumeration code in Linux assumes that buttons always
are wakeup devices, so it calls acpi_setup_gpe_for_wake() for them
which leads to undesirable side effects. Namely, that function sets
up implicit device wake notification mechanism for a given GPE if
there is no handler method in the ACPI namespace, which from the
ACPICA's perspective means that there always is a way to handle
that GPE if enabled. However, we don't handle wake notify events
for buttons, so if there are no handler methods for their GPEs in
the namespace, enabling a button GPE at run time leads to a GPE
storm in some cases (the GPE triggers, ACPICA carries out the
implicit wake notification for it which isn't handled, so the
GPE triggers again and so on).
To prevent that from happening use acpi_mark_gpe_for_wake()
instead of acpi_setup_gpe_for_wake() for buttons which will cause
ACPICA to only enable button GPEs if there are handler methods for
the in the namespace.

ACPICA commit c49dbfed2bc069d0038ea7e1294409bfde7c2c8c
Some potential callers of acpi_setup_gpe_for_wake may know in advance that
there won't be any notify handlers installed for device wake notifications
from the given GPE (one example is a button GPE in Linux). For these cases,
acpi_mark_gpe_for_wake should be used instead of acpi_setup_gpe_for_wake.
This will set the ACPI_GPE_CAN_WAKE flag for the GPE without trying to
setup implicit wake notification for it (since there's no handler method).

The ACPI_HANDLE() macro evaluates ACPI_COMPANION() internally to
return the handle of the device's ACPI companion, so it is much
more straightforward and efficient to use ACPI_COMPANION()
directly to obtain the device's ACPI companion object instead of
using ACPI_HANDLE() and acpi_bus_get_device() on the returned
handle for the same thing.
Do that in three places in the ACPI device PM code.

Wakeup GPEs are currently only enabled when setting up devices for
remote wakeup at run time. During system-wide transitions they are
enabled by ACPICA at the very last stage of suspend (before asking
the BIOS to take over). Of course, that only works for system
sleep states supported by ACPI, so in particular it doesn't work
for the "freeze" sleep state.
For this reason, modify the ACPI core device PM code to enable wakeup
GPEs for devices when setting them up for wakeup regardless of whether
that is remote wakeup at runtime or system wakeup. That allows the
same device wakeup setup routine to be used for both runtime PM and
system-wide PM and makes it possible to reduce code size quite a bit.
This make ACPI-based PCI Wake-on-LAN work with the "freeze" sleep
state on my venerable Toshiba Portege R500 and should help other
systems too.
Signed-off-by: Rafael J. Wysocki <rafael.j.wysocki@intel.com>
Since ACPI wakeup GPEs are going to be enabled during system suspend
as well as for runtime wakeup by a subsequent patch and the same
notify handlers will be used in both cases, rework the ACPI device
wakeup notification framework so that the part specific to physical
devices is always run asynchronously from the PM workqueue. This
prevents runtime resume callbacks for those devices from being
run during system suspend and resume which may not be appropriate,
among other things.
Also make ACPI device wakeup notification handling a bit more robust
agaist subsequent removal of ACPI device objects, whould that ever
happen, and create a wakeup source object for each ACPI device
configured for wakeup so that wakeup notifications for those
devices can wake up the system from the "freeze" sleep state.

During system suspend mark ACPI buttons (other than the lid) as
"suspended" and if in that state, report wakeup events on button
events, but do not propagate those events up the stack.
This prevents systems from being turned off after a button-triggered
wakeup from the "freeze" sleep state.

GHES currently maps two pages with atomic_ioremap. From now
on, NMI is architectural depended so there is no need to allocate
an NMI page for platforms without NMI support.
To make it possible to not use a second page, swap the existing
page order so that the IRQ context page is first, and the optional
NMI context page is second. Then, use HAVE_ACPI_APEI_NMI to decide
how many pages are to be allocated.

Currently APEI depends on x86 architecture. It is because of NMI hardware
error notification of GHES which is currently supported by x86 only.
However, many other APEI features can be still used perfectly by other
architectures.
This commit adds two symbols:
1. HAVE_ACPI_APEI for those archs which support APEI.
2. HAVE_ACPI_APEI_NMI which is used for NMI code isolation in ghes.c
file. NMI related data and functions are grouped so they can be wrapped
inside one #ifdef section. Appropriate function stubs are provided for
!NMI case.
Note there is no functional changes for x86 due to hard selected
HAVE_ACPI_APEI and HAVE_ACPI_APEI_NMI symbols.

Following on the patch "ACPI / processor: Check if LAPIC is present

on ARM64 platform, GIC is used instead of local APIC, so acpi_lapic
is not a suitable value for ARM64.
What is actually important at this point is if there is/are CPU

When the windows8 related backlight problems became evident, 2 approaches
were follow in parallel, one was to stop claiming to be windows 8 / 2012,
the other was to tell acpi_video to stop registering a backlight driver.
I've read all the threads and it seems that which approach ended up being
applied to which model laptop was never really a concious decision (AFAIK):
https://bugzilla.kernel.org/show_bug.cgi?id=51231https://bugzilla.kernel.org/show_bug.cgi?id=60682
So lets move all the models which are only on the win8 blacklist because of
brightness issues to the use_native_backlight list, which is the smaller
hammer to use to solve the backlight issues.
Making this change is esp. attractive now that 3.16 has
video.use_native_brightness=1 by default. If that new default does not get
reverted because of regressions, then we can drop all the models
with a use_native_backlight quirk, greatly reducing the number of models we've
a quirk for.

In various scenarious userspace will respond to brightness up/down keypresses
by increasing/decreasing the backlight brightness itself. If the kernel then
also changes the brightness this results in the brightness having changed 2
steps for a single keypress which is undesirable. See e.g. :

if userspace in that time responds by changing the backlight itself, cancels
the kernels own handling of these keypresses, fixing the 2 steps issue.

This patch uses abstract file IO and acpi_log_error() APIs to enhance
cm_get_file_size() so that applications that invoke this API could have
portability improved.
With actual references added to abstract file IO and acpi_log_error(), the
applications need to link oslibcfs.o, utdebug.o, utexcep.o, utmath.o,
utprint.o and utxferror.o.
It is also required to add acpi_os_initialize() invocations if an
application starts to use acpi_log_error().

This patch enhances ACPI_USAGE_xxx/ACPI_OPTION macros to use portable
acpi_os_printf() so that usage functions for applications no longer rely on
the printf() API.
To use acpi_os_printf() exported by osunixxf.c as a replacement of
printf(), applications need to initialize acpi_gbl_output_file to stdout
and initialize acpi_gbl_db_output_flags to ACPI_DB_CONSOLE_OUTPUT. The
latter is automatically done by ACPI_INIT_GLOBAL(), applications need to
link utglobal.o to utilize this mechanism. For GCC, assigning stdout to
acpi_gbl_output_file using ACPI_INIT_GLOBAL() is not possible as stdout is
not a constant in GCC environment. As an alternative solution, stdout
assignment has been put into acpi_os_initialize(). Thus
acpi_os_initialize() need to be invoked very early by the applications to
initialize the default output of acpi_os_printf() to keep behavior
consistency.

Invocations like fprintf(stderr) and perror() are not portable, this patch
introduces acpi_log_error() as a replacement, it is implemented using new
portable API - acpi_ut_file_vprintf().
Note that though acpi_os_initialize() need to be invoked prior than using
this new API, since no users are introduced in this patch, such invocations
are not added for applications that link utprint.c in this patch. Futher
patches that introduce users of acpi_log_error() should take care of this.
This patch is only useful for ACPICA applications, most of which are not
shipped in the Linux kernel.

This patch introduces formatted printing APIs to handle ACPICA specific
formatted print requirements. Currently only specific OSPMs will use this
customized printing support, Linux kernel doesn't use these APIs at this
time. It will be enabled for Linux kernel resident ACPICA after being well
tested. So currently this patch is a no-op.
The specific formatted printing APIs are useful to ACPICA as:
1. Some portable applications do not link standard C library, so they
cannot use standard formatted print APIs directly.
2. Platform specific printing format may differ and thus not portable, for
example, u64 is %ull for Linux kernel and is %uI64 for some MSVC
versions.
3. Platform specific printing format may conflict with ACPICA's usages
while it is not possible for ACPICA developers to test their code for
all platforms. For example, developers may generate %pRxxx while Linux
kernel treats %pR as structured resource printing and decodes variable
argument as a "struct resource" pointer.
This patch solves above issues by introducing the new APIs.
Note that users of such APIs are not introduced in this patch. Users of
acpi_os_file_vprintf()/acpi_ut_file_printf() need to invoke acpi_os_initialize(),
this should be taken care by the further patches where such users are
introduced. Lv Zheng.

This patch is mainly for acpidump where there are redundant
acpi_os_printf()/acpi_os_vprintf() stubs implemented. This patch cleans up such
specific implementation by linking acpidump to osunixxf.c/oswinxf.c.
To make acpi_os_printf() exported by osunixxf.c/oswinxf.c to behave as the
old acpidump specific ones, applications need to:
1. Initialize acpi_gbl_db_output_flags to ACPI_DB_CONSOLE_OUTPUT.
This is automatically done by ACPI_INIT_GLOBAL(), applications need to
link utglobal.o to utilize this mechanism.
2. Initialize acpi_gbl_output_file to stdout.
For GCC, assigning stdout to acpi_gbl_output_file using ACPI_INIT_GLOBAL()

alternative solution, stdout assignment is put into acpi_os_initialize().

The utglobal.c is used to define and initialize global variables. It makes
sense if just adding utglobal.o to applications that are using such
variables. But acpi_ut_init_globals() is preventing us from doing so as
this initialization function references other components' initializations
code, which leads to the requirement that many files should also get linked
if one wants to link utglobal.o.
It is possible to just move acpi_ut_init_global() to utinit.c for
applications that require this function to link.
By linking utglobal.o, we can stop defining DEFINE_ACPI_GLOBALS for
applications (currently only acpidump is affected). Lv Zheng.

It seems that some batteries (noticed on DELL JYPJ136) assume
capacity_now = design_capacity when fully charged. This causes
reported capacity to suddenly jump to >full_charge_capacity (and that
means capacity reported to userspace is >100% and incorrect)

PNPACPI uses acpi_bus_type to do ACPI binding for the PNPACPI devices.
This is overkill because PNPACPI code already knows which ACPI
device object to bind during PNPACPI device enumeration.
This patch removes acpi_pnp_bus and does the binding by invoking
acpi_bind_one() directly after device enumerated.
This also fixes a bug in the previous code that some PNPACPI devices failed
to be bound because
1. the ACPI device _HID is not pnpid, e.g. "MSFT0001", but its _CID is,
e.g. "PNP0303", thus ACPI _CID is used as the pnp device device id.
2. device is bound only if the pnp device id matches the ACPI device _HID.

There is a race condition in ec_transaction_completed().
When ec_transaction_completed() is called in the GPE handler, it could
return true because of (ec->curr == NULL). Then the wake_up() invocation
could complete the next command unexpectedly since there is no lock between
the 2 invocations. With the previous cleanup, the IBF=0 waiter race need
not be handled any more. It's now safe to return a flag from
advance_condition() to indicate the requirement of wakeup, the flag is
returned from a locked context.
The ec_transaction_completed() is now only invoked by the ec_poll() where
the ec->curr is ensured to be different from NULL.
After cleaning up, the EVT_SCI=1 check should be moved out of the wakeup
condition so that an EVT_SCI raised with (ec->curr == NULL) can trigger a
QR_SC command.

After we've added the first command byte write into advance_transaction(),
the IBF=0 waiter is duplicated with the command completion waiter
implemented in the ec_poll() because:
If IBF=1 blocked the first command byte write invoked in the task
context ec_poll(), it would be kicked off upon IBF=0 interrupt or timed
out and retried again in the task context.
Remove this seperate and duplicate IBF=0 waiter. By doing so we can
reduce the overall number of times to access the EC_SC(R) status
register.

Move the first command byte write into advance_transaction() so that all
EC register accesses that can affect the command processing state machine
can happen in this asynchronous state machine advancement function.
The advance_transaction() function then can be a complete implementation
of an asyncrhonous transaction for a single command so that:
1. The first command byte can be written in the interrupt context;
2. The command completion waiter can also be used to wait the first command
byte's timeout;
3. In BURST mode, the follow-up command bytes can be written in the
interrupt context directly, so that it doesn't need to return to the
task context. Returning to the task context reduces the throughput of
the BURST mode and in the worst cases where the system workload is very
high, this leads to the hardware driven automatic BURST mode exit.
In order not to increase memory consumption, convert 'done' into 'flags'
to contain multiple indications:
1. ACPI_EC_COMMAND_COMPLETE: converting from original 'done' condition,
indicating the completion of the command transaction.
2. ACPI_EC_COMMAND_POLL: indicating the availability of writing the first
command byte. A new command can utilize this flag to compete for the
right of accessing the underlying hardware. There is a follow-up bug
fix that has utilized this new flag.
The 2 flags are important because it also reflects a key concept of IO
programs' design used in the system softwares. Normally an IO program
running in the kernel should first be implemented in the asynchronous way.
And the 2 flags are the most common way to implement its synchronous
operations on top of the asynchronous operations:
1. POLL: This flag can be used to block until the asynchronous operations
can happen.
2. COMPLETE: This flag can be used to block until the asynchronous
operations have completed.
By constructing code cleanly in this way, many difficult problems can be
solved smoothly.

The advance_transaction() will be invoked from the IRQ context GPE handler
and the task context ec_poll(). The handling of this function is locked so
that the EC state machine are ensured to be advanced sequentially.
But there is a problem. Before invoking advance_transaction(), EC_SC(R) is
read. Then for advance_transaction(), there could be race condition around
the lock from both contexts. The first one reading the register could fail
this race and when it passes the stale register value to the state machine
advancement code, the hardware condition is totally different from when
the register is read. And the hardware accesses determined from the wrong
hardware status can break the EC state machine. And there could be cases
that the functionalities of the platform firmware are seriously affected.
For example:
1. When 2 EC_DATA(W) writes compete the IBF=0, the 2nd EC_DATA(W) write may
be invalid due to IBF=1 after the 1st EC_DATA(W) write. Then the
hardware will either refuse to respond a next EC_SC(W) write of the next
command or discard the current WR_EC command when it receives a EC_SC(W)
write of the next command.
2. When 1 EC_SC(W) write and 1 EC_DATA(W) write compete the IBF=0, the
EC_DATA(W) write may be invalid due to IBF=1 after the EC_SC(W) write.
The next EC_DATA(R) could never be responded by the hardware. This is
the root cause of the reported issue.
Fix this issue by moving the EC_SC(R) access into the lock so that we can
ensure that the state machine is advanced consistently.

On Acer Aspire V5-573G battery notifications are sometimes
triggered too early. For example, when AC is unplugged and
notification is triggered, battery state is still reported as
"Full", and changes to "Discharging" only after short delay,
without any notification.
This patch solves the problem by adding 1 second sleep.
Similar quirk is already implemented in AC driver for other laptop.

On Intel Baytrail, some I2C host controllers are held in reset when the OS
gets control. This causes the driver to fail to detect the hardware
properly.
Fix this so that we make sure that the I2C host controller is not in reset
when the driver gets probe'd.

The following commit has changed ACPICA table header definitions:
Commit: 88f074f487
Subject: ACPI, CPER: Update cper info
While such definitions are currently maintained in ACPICA. As the
modifications applying to the table definitions affect other OSPMs'
drivers, it is very difficult for ACPICA to initiate a process to
complete the merge. Thus this commit finally only leaves us divergences.
Revert such naming modifications to reduce the source code differecnes
between Linux and ACPICA upstream. No functional changes.

ACPI / video: Change the default for video.use_native_backlight to 1
Adds trace events that give finer resolution into suspend/resume. These
events are graphed in the timelines generated by the analyze_suspend.py
script. They represent large areas of time consumed that are typical to
suspend and resume.
The event is triggered by calling the function "trace_suspend_resume"
with three arguments: a string (the name of the event to be displayed
in the timeline), an integer (case specific number, such as the power
state or cpu number), and a boolean (where true is used to denote the start
of the timeline event, and false to denote the end).
The suspend_resume trace event reproduces the data that the machine_suspend
trace event did, so the latter has been removed.

Pull ACPI and power management updates from Rafael Wysocki:
"ACPICA is the leader this time (63 commits), followed by cpufreq (28
commits), devfreq (15 commits), system suspend/hibernation (12
commits), ACPI video and ACPI device enumeration (10 commits each).
We have no major new features this time, but there are a few
significant changes of how things work. The most visible one will
probably be that we are now going to create platform devices rather
than PNP devices by default for ACPI device objects with _HID. That
was long overdue and will be really necessary to be able to use the
same drivers for the same hardware blocks on ACPI and DT-based systems
going forward. We're not expecting fallout from this one (as usual),
but it's something to watch nevertheless.
The second change having a chance to be visible is that ACPI video
will now default to using native backlight rather than the ACPI
backlight interface which should generally help systems with broken
Win8 BIOSes. We're hoping that all problems with the native backlight
handling that we had previously have been addressed and we are in a
good enough shape to flip the default, but this change should be easy
enough to revert if need be.
In addition to that, the system suspend core has a new mechanism to
allow runtime-suspended devices to stay suspended throughout system
suspend/resume transitions if some extra conditions are met
(generally, they are related to coordination within device hierarchy).
However, enabling this feature requires cooperation from the bus type
layer and for now it has only been implemented for the ACPI PM domain
(used by ACPI-enumerated platform devices mostly today).
Also, the acpidump utility that was previously shipped as a separate
tool will now be provided by the upstream ACPICA along with the rest
of ACPICA code, which will allow it to be more up to date and better
supported, and we have one new cpuidle driver (ARM clps711x).
The rest is improvements related to certain specific use cases,
cleanups and fixes all over the place.
Specifics:
- ACPICA update to upstream version 20140424. That includes a number

table loading, headers, memory mapping and unmapping, DSDT/SSDT
overriding, and the Unload() operator. The acpidump utility from

when installing the following table during early stage:
ACPI: SSDT 0x00000000B9638018 07A0C4 (v02 INTEL S2600CP 00004000 INTL 20100331)
The regression is caused by the size limitation of the x86 early IO mapping.
The root cause is:
1. ACPICA doesn't split IO memory mapping and table mapping;
2. Linux x86 OSL implements acpi_os_map_memory() using a size limited fix-map
mechanism during early boot stage, which is more suitable for only IO
mappings.
This patch fixes this issue by utilizing acpi_gbl_verify_table_checksum to
disable the table mapping during early stage and enabling it again for the
late stage. In this way, the normal code path is not affected. Then after
the code related to the root cause is cleaned up, the early checksum
verification can be easily re-enabled.
A new boot parameter - acpi_force_table_verification is introduced for
the platforms that require the checksum verification to stop loading bad
tables.
This fix also covers the checksum verification for the table overrides. Now
large tables can also be overridden using the initrd override mechanism.

It is reported that Linux x86 kernel cannot map large tables. The following
large SSDT table on such platform fails to pass checksum verification and
cannot be installed:
ACPI: SSDT 0x00000000B9638018 07A0C4 (v02 INTEL S2600CP 00004000 INTL 20100331)
It sounds strange that in the 64-bit virtual memory address space, we
cannot map a single ACPI table to do checksum verification. The root cause
is:
1. ACPICA doesn't split IO memory mapping and table mapping;
2. Linux x86 OSL implements acpi_os_map_memory() using a size limited fix-map
mechanism during early boot stage, which is more suitable for only IO
mappings.
ACPICA originally only mapped table header for signature validation, and
this header mapping is required by OSL override mechanism. There was no
checksum verification because we could not map the whole table using this
OSL. While the following ACPICA commit enforces checksum verification by
mapping the whole table during Linux boot stage and it finally triggers
this issue on some platforms:
Commit: 86dfc6f339
Subject: ACPICA: Tables: Fix table checksums verification before installation.
Before doing further cleanups for the OSL table mapping and override
implementation, this patch introduces an option for such OSPMs to
temporarily discard the checksum verification feature. It then can be
re-enabled easily when the ACPICA and the underlying OSL is ready.
This patch also deletes a comment around the limitation of mappings because
it is not correct. The limitation is not how many times we can map in the
early stage, but the OSL mapping facility may not be suitable for mapping
the ACPI tables and thus may complain us the size limitation.
The acpi_tb_verify_table() is renamed to acpi_tb_verify_temp_table() due to the
work around added, it now only applies to the table descriptor that hasn't
been installed and cannot be used in other cases. Lv Zheng.

Currently, some scan handlers can be compiled out entirely, which
leaves the device objects they normally attach to without a scan
handler. This isn't a problem as long as we don't have any default
enumeration mechanism that applies to all devices without a scan
handler. However, if such a default enumeration is added, it still
should not be applied to devices that are normally attached to by
scan handlers, because that may result in creating "physical" device
objects of a wrong type for them.
Since we are going to create platform device objects for all ACPI
device objects with pnp.type.platform_id set by default, clear
pnp.type.platform_id where there is a matching scan handler without
an .attach() callback and otherwise simply treat that scan handler
as though the .attach() callback was present but always returned 0.
This will allow us to compile out scan handler callbacks and leave
the device ID lists used by them so as to prevent creating platform
device objects for the matching ACPI devices.

ACPI can be used to enumerate PNP devices, but the code does not
handle this in the right way currently. Namely, if an ACPI device
object
1. Has a _CRS method,
2. Has an identification of
"three capital characters followed by four hex digits",
3. Is not in the excluded IDs list,
it will be enumerated to PNP bus (that is, a PNP device object will
be create for it). This means that, actually, the PNP bus type is
used as the default bus type for enumerating _HID devices in ACPI.
However, more and more _HID devices need to be enumerated to the
platform bus instead (that is, platform device objects need to be
created for them). As a result, the device ID list in acpi_platform.c
is used to enforce creating platform device objects rather than PNP
device objects for matching devices. That list has been continuously
growing recently, unfortunately, and it is pretty much guaranteed to
grow even more in the future.
To address that problem it is better to enumerate _HID devices
as platform devices by default. To this end, change the way of
enumerating PNP devices by adding a PNP ACPI scan handler that
will use a device ID list to create PNP devices for the ACPI
device objects whose device IDs are present in that list.
The initial device ID list in the PNP ACPI scan handler contains
all of the pnp_device_id strings from all the existing PNP drivers,
so this change should be transparent to the PNP core and all of the
PNP drivers. Still, in the future it should be possible to reduce
its size by converting PNP drivers that need not be PNP for any
technical reasons into platform drivers.

ACPICA doesn't include protections around address space checking, Linux
build tests always complain increased sparse warnings around ACPICA
internal acpi_os_map/unmap_memory() invocations. This patch tries to fix
this issue permanently.
There are 2 choices left for us to solve this issue:
1. Add __iomem address space awareness into ACPICA.
2. Remove sparse checker of __iomem from ACPICA source code.
This patch chooses solution 2, because:
1. Most of the acpi_os_map/unmap_memory() invocations are used for ACPICA.
table mappings, which in fact are not IO addresses.
2. The only IO addresses usage is for "system memory space" mapping code in:
drivers/acpi/acpica/exregion.c
drivers/acpi/acpica/evrgnini.c
drivers/acpi/acpica/exregion.c
The mapped address is accessed in the handler of "system memory space"
- acpi_ex_system_memory_space_handler(). This function in fact can be
changed to invoke acpi_os_read/write_memory() so that __iomem can
always be type-casted in the OSL layer.
According to the above investigation, we drew the following conclusion:
It is not a good idea to introduce __iomem address space awareness into
ACPICA mostly in order to protect non-IO addresses.
We can simply remove __iomem for acpi_os_map/unmap_memory() to remove
__iomem checker for ACPICA code. Then we need to enforce external usages
to invoke other APIs that are aware of __iomem address space.
The external usages are:
drivers/acpi/apei/einj.c
drivers/acpi/acpi_extlog.c
drivers/char/tpm/tpm_acpi.c
drivers/acpi/nvs.c
This patch thus performs cleanups in this way:
1. Add acpi_os_map/unmap_iomem() to be invoked by non-ACPICA code.
2. Remove __iomem from acpi_os_map/unmap_memory().

Add an acpi_video_unregister_backlight function, which only unregisters
the backlight device, and leaves the acpi_notifier in place. Some acpi_vendor
driver need this as they don't want the acpi_video# backlight device, but do
need the acpi-video driver for hotkey handling.
Chances are that this new acpi_video_unregister_backlight() is actually
what existing acpi_vendor drivers have wanted all along. Currently acpi_vendor
drivers which want to disable the acpi_video# backlight device, make 2 calls:
acpi_video_dmi_promote_vendor();
acpi_video_unregister();
The intention here is to make things independent of when acpi_video_register()
gets called. As acpi_video_register() will get called on acpi-video load time
on non intel gfx machines, while it gets called on i915 load time on intel
gfx machines.
This leads to the following 2 interesting scenarios:
a) intel gfx:
1) acpi-video module gets loaded (as it is a dependency of acpi_vendor
and i915)
2) acpi-video does NOT call acpi_video_register()
3) acpi_vendor loads (lets assume it loads before i915), calls
acpi_video_dmi_promote_vendor(); which sets
ACPI_VIDEO_BACKLIGHT_DMI_VENDOR
4) calls acpi_video_unregister -> not registered, nop
5) i915 loads, calls acpi_video_register
6) acpi_video_register registers the acpi_notifier for the hotkeys,
does NOT register a backlight device because of
ACPI_VIDEO_BACKLIGHT_DMI_VENDOR
b) non intel gfx
1) acpi-video module gets loaded (as it is a dependency acpi_vendor)
2) acpi-video calls acpi_video_register()
3) acpi_video_register registers the acpi_notifier for the hotkeys,
and a backlight device
4) acpi_vendor loads, calls acpi_video_dmi_promote_vendor()
5) calls acpi_video_unregister, this unregisters BOTH the acpi_notifier
for the hotkeys AND the backlight device
So here we have possibly the same acpi_vendor module, making the same calls,
but with different results, in one cases acpi-video does handle hotkeys,
in the other it does not.
Note that the a) scenario turns into b) if we assume the i915 module loads
before the vendor_acpi module, so we also have different behavior depending
on module loading order!
So as said I believe that quite a few existing acpi_vendor modules really
always want the behavior of a), hence this patch adds a new
acpi_video_unregister_backlight() which gives the behavior of a) independent
of module loading order.
