This KUnit update for Linux 5.13-rc1 consists of several fixes and
new feature to support failure from dynamic analysis tools such as
UBSAN and fake ops for testing.
- a fake ops struct for testing a "free" function to complain if it
was called with an invalid argument, or caught a double-free. Most
return void and have no normal means of signalling failure
(e.g. super_operations, iommu_ops, etc.).

The kernel now has a number of testing and debugging tools, and we've
seen a bit of confusion about what the differences between them are.
Add a basic documentation outlining the testing tools, when to use each,
and how they interact.
This is a pretty quick overview rather than the idealised "kernel
testing guide" that'd probably be optimal, but given the number of times
questions like "When do you use KUnit and when do you use Kselftest?"
are being asked, it seemed worth at least having something. Hopefully
this can form the basis for more detailed documentation later.

Architectures supported by KASAN_HW_TAGS can provide a sync or async mode
of execution. On an MTE enabled arm64 hw for example this can be identified
with the synchronous or asynchronous tagging mode of execution.
In synchronous mode, an exception is triggered if a tag check fault occurs.
In asynchronous mode, if a tag check fault occurs, the TFSR_EL1 register is
updated asynchronously. The kernel checks the corresponding bits
periodically.
KASAN requires a specific kernel command line parameter to make use of this
hw features.
Add KASAN HW execution mode kernel command line parameter.
Note: This patch adds the kasan.mode kernel parameter and the
sync/async kernel command line options to enable the described features.
[ Add a new var instead of exposing kasan_arg_mode to be consistent with
flags for other command line arguments. ]

As of commit 359a376081 ("kunit: support failure from dynamic analysis
tools"), we can use current->kunit_test to find the current kunit test.
Mention this in tips.rst and give an example of how this can be used in
conjunction with `test->priv` to pass around state and specifically
implement something like mocking.
There's a lot more we could go into on that topic, but given that
example is already longer than every other "tip" on this page, we just
point to the API docs and leave filling in the blanks as an exercise to
the reader.
Also give an example of kunit_fail_current_test().

We cannot rely on CONFIG_DEBUG_KERNEL to decide if we're running a "debug
kernel" where we can safely show potentially sensitive information in the
kernel log.
Instead, simply rely on the newly introduced "no_hash_pointers" to print
unhashed kernel pointers, as well as decide if our reports can include
other potentially sensitive information such as registers and corrupted
bytes.

Currently, whether the alloc/free stack traces collection is enabled by
default for hardware tag-based KASAN depends on CONFIG_DEBUG_KERNEL.
The intention for this dependency was to only enable collection on slow
debug kernels due to a significant perf and memory impact.
As it turns out, CONFIG_DEBUG_KERNEL is not considered a debug option
and is enabled on many productions kernels including Android and Ubuntu.
As the result, this dependency is pointless and only complicates the
code and documentation.
Having stack traces collection disabled by default would make the
hardware mode work differently to to the software ones, which is
confusing.
This change removes the dependency and enables stack traces collection
by default.
Looking into the future, this default might makes sense for production
kernels, assuming we implement a fast stack trace collection approach.

./usage.rst contains fairly long examples and explanations of things
like how to fake a class and how to use parameterized tests (and how you
could do table-driven tests yourself).
It's not exactly necessary information, so we add a new page with more
digestible tips like "use kunit_kzalloc() instead of kzalloc() so you
don't have to worry about calling kfree() yourself" and the like.
Change start.rst to point users to this new page first and let them know
that usage.rst is more of optional further reading.

The initially proposed KASAN command line parameters are redundant.
This change drops the complex "kasan.mode=off/prod/full" parameter and
adds a simpler kill switch "kasan=off/on" instead. The new parameter
together with the already existing ones provides a cleaner way to
express the same set of features.
The full set of parameters with this change:
kasan=off/on - whether KASAN is enabled
kasan.fault=report/panic - whether to only print a report or also panic
kasan.stacktrace=off/on - whether to collect alloc/free stack traces
Default values:
kasan=on
kasan.fault=report
kasan.stacktrace=on (if CONFIG_DEBUG_KERNEL=y)
kasan.stacktrace=off (otherwise)

This is a preparatory commit for the upcoming addition of a new hardware
tag-based (MTE-based) KASAN mode.
The new mode won't be using shadow memory, but will still use the concept
of memory granules. Each memory granule maps to a single metadata entry:
8 bytes per one shadow byte for generic mode, 16 bytes per one shadow byte
for software tag-based mode, and 16 bytes per one allocation tag for
hardware tag-based mode.
Rename KASAN_SHADOW_SCALE_SIZE to KASAN_GRANULE_SIZE, and
KASAN_SHADOW_MASK to KASAN_GRANULE_MASK.
Also use MASK when used as a mask, otherwise use SIZE.
No functional changes.

Pull documentation updates from Jonathan Corbet:
"A much quieter cycle for documentation (happily), with, one hopes, the
bulk of the churn behind us. Significant stuff in this pull includes:
- A set of new Chinese translations
- Italian translation updates
- A mechanism from Mauro to automatically format
Documentation/features for the built docs
- Automatic cross references without explicit :ref: markup
- A new reset-controller document
- An extensive new document on reporting problems from Thorsten
That last patch also adds the CC-BY-4.0 license to LICENSES/dual;
there was some discussion on this, but we seem to have consensus and
an ack from Greg for that addition"

usage.rst goes into a detailed section about faking out classes, but
currently lacks wording about how one might idiomatically test a range
of inputs.
Add a new chapter for "Common Patterns" and group "Isolating behvaior"
and this new section under there.
Give an example of how one might test a hash function via macros/helper
funcs and a table-driven test and very briefly discuss pros and cons.
Also highlight the KUNIT_EXPECT_*_MSG() variants (that aren't mentioned
elsewhere [1]) which are particularly useful in these situations.
It is also criminally underused at the moment, only appearing in 2
tests (both written by people involved in KUnit).

- add Kunit to kernel_init() and remove KUnit from init calls entirely.
This addresses the concern Kunit would not work correctly during

- add a linker section where KUnit can put references to its test suites.
This patch is the first step in transitioning to dispatching all KUnit
tests from a centralized executor rather than having each as its own
separate late_initcall.

This kselftest update for Linux 5.10-rc1 consists of enhancements to
-- speed up headers_install done during selftest build
-- add generic make nesting support
-- add support to select individual tests:
- Selftests build/install generates run_kselftest.sh script to run
selftests on a target system. Currently the script doesn't have
support for selecting individual tests. Add support for it.
With this enhancement, user can select test collections (or tests)

run_kselftest.sh -c seccomp -t timers:posix_timers -t timers:nanosleep
Additionally adds a way to list all known tests with "-l", usage
with "-h", and perform a dry run without running tests with "-n".

As discussed in [1], KUnit tests have hitherto not had a particularly

and test suites should be named, including how those names should be
used in Kconfig entries and filenames.

Rationale:
Reduces attack surface on kernel devs opening the links for MITM
as HTTPS traffic is much harder to manipulate.
Deterministic algorithm:
For each file:
If not .svg:
For each line:
If doesn't contain `\bxmlns\b`:
For each link, `\bhttp://[^# \t\r\n]*(?:\w|/)`:
If neither `\bgnu\.org/license`, nor `\bmozilla\.org/MPL\b`:
If both the HTTP and HTTPS versions
return 200 OK and serve the same content:
Replace HTTP with HTTPS.

but this wiki only contained a short intro and the release notes.
But nowadays, sparse's main page is sparse.docs.kernel.org,

mainly oriented about sparse's internals.

selftests: introduce gen_tar Makefile target
Rationale:
Reduces attack surface on kernel devs opening the links for MITM
as HTTPS traffic is much harder to manipulate.
Deterministic algorithm:
For each file:
For each line:
If doesn't contain `\bxmlns\b`:
For each link, `\bhttp://[^# \t\r\n]*(?:\w|/)`:
If both the HTTP and HTTPS versions
return 200 OK and serve the same content:
Replace HTTP with HTTPS.

This change extends kcov remote coverage support to allow collecting
coverage from soft interrupts in addition to kernel background threads.
To collect coverage from code that is executed in softirq context, a part
of that code has to be annotated with kcov_remote_start/stop() in a
similar way as how it is done for global kernel background threads. Then
the handle used for the annotations has to be passed to the
KCOV_REMOTE_ENABLE ioctl.
Internally this patch adjusts the __sanitizer_cov_trace_pc() compiler
inserted callback to not bail out when called from softirq context.
kcov_remote_start/stop() are updated to save/restore the current per task
kcov state in a per-cpu area (in case the softirq came when the kernel was
already collecting coverage in task context). Coverage from softirqs is
collected into pre-allocated per-cpu areas, whose size is controlled by
the new CONFIG_KCOV_IRQ_AREA_SIZE.

The recent patch ("kgdboc: Add kgdboc_earlycon to support early kgdb
using boot consoles") adds a new kernel command line parameter.
Document it.
Note that the patch adding the feature does some comparing/contrasting
of "kgdboc_earlycon" vs. the existing "ekgdboc". See that patch for
more details, but briefly "ekgdboc" can be used _instead_ of "kgdboc"
and just makes "kgdboc" do its normal initialization early (only works
if your tty driver is already ready). The new "kgdboc_earlycon" works
in combination with "kgdboc" and is backed by boot consoles.

The gen_kselftest_tar.sh always packages *all* selftests and doesn't
pass along any variables to `make install` to influence what should be
built. This can result in an early error on the command line ("Unknown
tarball format TARGETS=XXX"), or unexpected test failures as the
tarball contains tests people wanted to skip on purpose.
Since the makefile already contains all the logic, we can add a target
for packaging. Keep the default .gz target the script uses, and actually
extend the supported formats by using tar's autodetection.
To not break current workflows, keep the gen_kselftest_tar.sh script as
it is, with an added suggestion to use the makefile target instead.

Allow users to build parameterized variants of fixtures.
If fixtures want variants, they call FIXTURE_VARIANT() to declare
the structure to fill for each variant. Each fixture will be re-run
for each of the variants defined by calling FIXTURE_VARIANT_ADD()

Since tests are being re-run, additional initialization (steps,

Introduce ASSERT_EXCLUSIVE_*_SCOPED(), which provide an intuitive
interface to use the scoped-access feature, without having to explicitly
mark the start and end of the desired scope. Basing duration of the
checks on scope avoids accidental misuse and resulting false positives,
which may be hard to debug. See added comments for usage.
The macros are implemented using __attribute__((__cleanup__(func))),
which is supported by all compilers that currently support KCSAN.

Patch series " kcov: collect coverage from usb and vhost", v3.
This patchset extends kcov to allow collecting coverage from backgound
kernel threads. This extension requires custom annotations for each of
the places where coverage collection is desired. This patchset
implements this for hub events in the USB subsystem and for vhost
workers. See the first patch description for details about the kcov
extension. The other two patches apply this kcov extension to USB and
vhost.
Examples of other subsystems that might potentially benefit from this
when custom annotations are added (the list is based on
process_one_work() callers for bugs recently reported by syzbot):
1. fs: writeback wb_workfn() worker,
2. net: addrconf_dad_work()/addrconf_verify_work() workers,
3. net: neigh_periodic_work() worker,
4. net/p9: p9_write_work()/p9_read_work() workers,
5. block: blk_mq_run_work_fn() worker.
These patches have been used to enable coverage-guided USB fuzzing with
syzkaller for the last few years, see the details here:
https://github.com/google/syzkaller/blob/master/docs/linux/external_fuzzing_usb.md
This patchset has been pushed to the public Linux kernel Gerrit
instance:
https://linux-review.googlesource.com/c/linux/kernel/git/torvalds/linux/+/1524
This patch (of 3):
Add background thread coverage collection ability to kcov.
With KCOV_ENABLE coverage is collected only for syscalls that are issued
from the current process. With KCOV_REMOTE_ENABLE it's possible to
collect coverage for arbitrary parts of the kernel code, provided that
those parts are annotated with kcov_remote_start()/kcov_remote_stop().
This allows to collect coverage from two types of kernel background
threads: the global ones, that are spawned during kernel boot in a
limited number of instances (e.g. one USB hub_event() worker thread is
spawned per USB HCD); and the local ones, that are spawned when a user
interacts with some kernel interface (e.g. vhost workers).
To enable collecting coverage from a global background thread, a unique
global handle must be assigned and passed to the corresponding
kcov_remote_start() call. Then a userspace process can pass a list of
such handles to the KCOV_REMOTE_ENABLE ioctl in the handles array field
of the kcov_remote_arg struct. This will attach the used kcov device to
the code sections, that are referenced by those handles.
Since there might be many local background threads spawned from
different userspace processes, we can't use a single global handle per
annotation. Instead, the userspace process passes a non-zero handle
through the common_handle field of the kcov_remote_arg struct. This
common handle gets saved to the kcov_handle field in the current
task_struct and needs to be passed to the newly spawned threads via
custom annotations. Those threads should in turn be annotated with
kcov_remote_start()/kcov_remote_stop().
Internally kcov stores handles as u64 integers. The top byte of a
handle is used to denote the id of a subsystem that this handle belongs
to, and the lower 4 bytes are used to denote the id of a thread instance
within that subsystem. A reserved value 0 is used as a subsystem id for
common handles as they don't belong to a particular subsystem. The
bytes 4-7 are currently reserved and must be zero. In the future the
number of bytes used for the subsystem or handle ids might be increased.
When a particular userspace process collects coverage by via a common
handle, kcov will collect coverage for each code section that is
annotated to use the common handle obtained as kcov_handle from the
current task_struct. However non common handles allow to collect
coverage selectively from different subsystems.

Patch series "kasan: support backing vmalloc space with real shadow
memory", v11.
Currently, vmalloc space is backed by the early shadow page. This means
that kasan is incompatible with VMAP_STACK.
This series provides a mechanism to back vmalloc space with real,
dynamically allocated memory. I have only wired up x86, because that's
the only currently supported arch I can work with easily, but it's very
easy to wire up other architectures, and it appears that there is some
work-in-progress code to do this on arm64 and s390.
This has been discussed before in the context of VMAP_STACK:
- https://lkml.org/lkml/2018/7/22/198
In terms of implementation details:
Most mappings in vmalloc space are small, requiring less than a full
page of shadow space. Allocating a full shadow page per mapping would
therefore be wasteful. Furthermore, to ensure that different mappings
use different shadow pages, mappings would have to be aligned to
KASAN_SHADOW_SCALE_SIZE * PAGE_SIZE.
Instead, share backing space across multiple mappings. Allocate a
backing page when a mapping in vmalloc space uses a particular page of
the shadow region. This page can be shared by other vmalloc mappings
later on.
We hook in to the vmap infrastructure to lazily clean up unused shadow
memory.
Testing with test_vmalloc.sh on an x86 VM with 2 vCPUs shows that:
- Turning on KASAN, inline instrumentation, without vmalloc, introuduces
a 4.1x-4.2x slowdown in vmalloc operations.
- Turning this on introduces the following slowdowns over KASAN:
* ~1.76x slower single-threaded (test_vmalloc.sh performance)
* ~2.18x slower when both cpus are performing operations
simultaneously (test_vmalloc.sh sequential_test_order=1)
This is unfortunate but given that this is a debug feature only, not the
end of the world. The benchmarks are also a stress-test for the vmalloc
subsystem: they're not indicative of an overall 2x slowdown!
This patch (of 4):
Hook into vmalloc and vmap, and dynamically allocate real shadow memory
to back the mappings.
Most mappings in vmalloc space are small, requiring less than a full
page of shadow space. Allocating a full shadow page per mapping would
therefore be wasteful. Furthermore, to ensure that different mappings
use different shadow pages, mappings would have to be aligned to
KASAN_SHADOW_SCALE_SIZE * PAGE_SIZE.
Instead, share backing space across multiple mappings. Allocate a
backing page when a mapping in vmalloc space uses a particular page of
the shadow region. This page can be shared by other vmalloc mappings
later on.
We hook in to the vmap infrastructure to lazily clean up unused shadow
memory.
To avoid the difficulties around swapping mappings around, this code
expects that the part of the shadow region that covers the vmalloc space
will not be covered by the early shadow page, but will be left unmapped.
This will require changes in arch-specific code.
This allows KASAN with VMAP_STACK, and may be helpful for architectures
that do not have a separate module space (e.g. powerpc64, which I am
currently working on). It also allows relaxing the module alignment
back to PAGE_SIZE.
* ~1.76x slower single-threaded (test_vmalloc.sh performance)
* ~2.18x slower when both cpus are performing operations
simultaneously (test_vmalloc.sh sequential_test_order=3D1)
This is unfortunate but given that this is a debug feature only, not the
end of the world.

This kselftest update for Linux 5.5-rc1 adds KUnit, a lightweight unit
testing and mocking framework for the Linux kernel from Brendan Higgins.
KUnit is not an end-to-end testing framework. It is currently supported
on UML and sub-systems can write unit tests and run them in UML env.
KUnit documentation is included in this update.
In addition, this Kunit update adds 3 new kunit tests:
- kunit test for proc sysctl from Iurii Zaikin
- kunit test for the 'list' doubly linked list from David Gow
- ext4 kunit test for decoding extended timestamps from Iurii Zaikin
In the future KUnit will be linked to Kselftest framework to provide
a way to trigger KUnit tests from user-space.

I need to pick up the independent changes made to
Documentation/core-api/memory-allocation.rst to be able to merge further
work without creating a total mess.
Commit 8974558f49 ("mm, page_owner, debug_pagealloc: save and dump
freeing stack trace") enhanced page_owner to also store freeing stack
trace, when debug_pagealloc is also enabled. KASAN would also like to
do this [1] to improve error reports to debug e.g. UAF issues.
Kirill has suggested that the freeing stack trace saving should be also
possible to be enabled separately from KASAN or debug_pagealloc, i.e.
with an extra boot option. Qian argued that we have enough options
already, and avoiding the extra overhead is not worth the complications
in the case of a debugging option. Kirill noted that the extra stack
handle in struct page_owner requires 0.1% of memory.
This patch therefore enables free stack saving whenever page_owner is
enabled, regardless of whether debug_pagealloc or KASAN is also enabled.
KASAN kernels booted with page_owner=on will thus benefit from the
improved error reports.

kselftest runs as a userspace process. Sometimes we need to test things
from kernel space. One way of doing this is by creating a test module.
Currently doing so requires developers to write a bunch of boiler plate
in the module if kselftest is to be used to run the tests. This means
we currently have a load of duplicate code to achieve these ends. If we
have a uniform method for implementing test modules then we can reduce
code duplication, ensure uniformity in the test framework, ease code
maintenance, and reduce the work required to create tests. This all
helps to encourage developers to write and run tests.
Add a C header file that can be included in test modules. This provides
a single point for common test functions/macros. Implement a few macros
that make up the start of the test framework.
Add documentation for new kselftest header to kselftest documentation.

These patches convert files in Documentation/vm to ReST format, add an
initial index and link it to the top level documentation.
There are no contents changes in the documentation, except few spelling
fixes. The relatively large diffstat stems from the indentation and
paragraph wrapping changes.
I've tried to keep the formatting as consistent as possible, but I could
miss some places that needed markup and add some markup where it was not
necessary.

Kmemleak requires that vmalloc'ed objects have a minimum reference count
of 2: one in the corresponding vm_struct object and the other owned by
the vmalloc() caller. There are cases, however, where the original
vmalloc() returned pointer is lost and, instead, a pointer to vm_struct
is stored (see free_thread_stack()). Kmemleak currently reports such
objects as leaks.
This patch adds support for treating any surplus references to an object
as additional references to a specified object. It introduces the
kmemleak_vmalloc() API function which takes a vm_struct pointer and sets
its surplus reference passing to the actual vmalloc() returned pointer.
The __vmalloc_node_range() calling site has been modified accordingly.

The sparse-based checking for non-RCU accesses to RCU-protected pointers
has been around for a very long time, and it is now the only type of
sparse-based checking that is optional. This commit therefore makes
it unconditional.

The automatic conversion didn't work too well for this file.
It added weird html blocks inside it, and did some weird
things for literals. Manually fix it, in order to present
a nice display at html/pdf outputs.

Some of the kmemleak_*() callbacks in memblock, bootmem, CMA convert a
physical address to a virtual one using __va(). However, such physical
addresses may sometimes be located in highmem and using __va() is
incorrect, leading to inconsistent object tracking in kmemleak.
The following functions have been added to the kmemleak API and they take
a physical address as the object pointer. They only perform the
corresponding action if the address has a lowmem mapping:
kmemleak_alloc_phys
kmemleak_free_part_phys
kmemleak_not_leak_phys
kmemleak_ignore_phys
The affected calling places have been updated to use the new kmemleak
API.
