90b8fab5cd mm/highmem: make nr_free_highpages() return "unsigned long"
It looks rather weird that totalhigh_pages() returns an "unsigned long"
but nr_free_highpages() returns an "unsigned int".

Let's return an "unsigned long" from nr_free_highpages() to be consistent.

While at it, use a plain "0" instead of a "0UL" in the !CONFIG_HIGHMEM
totalhigh_pages() implementation, to make these look alike as well.

7a581204b1 mm/highmem: reimplement totalhigh_pages() by walking zones
Patch series "mm/highmem: don't track highmem pages manually".

Let's remove highmem special-casing from adjust_managed_page_count(), to
result in less confusion why memblock manually adjusts totalram_pages, and
__free_pages_core() only adjusts the zone's managed pages -- what about
the highmem pages that adjust_managed_page_count() updates?

Now, we only maintain totalram_pages and a zone's managed pages
independent of highmem support. We can derive the number of highmem pages
simply by looking at the relevant zone's managed pages. I don't think
there is any particular fast path that needs a maximum-efficient
totalhigh_pages() implementation.

Note that highmem memory is currently initialized using
free_highmem_page()->free_reserved_page(), not __free_pages_core().  In
the future we might want to also use __free_pages_core() to initialize
highmem memory, to make that less special, and consider moving
totalram_pages updates into __free_pages_core() [1], so we can just use
adjust_managed_page_count() in there as well.

Booting a simple kernel in QEMU reveals no highmem accounting change:

Before:
  Memory: 3095448K/3145208K available (14802K kernel code, 2073K rwdata,
  5000K rodata, 740K init, 556K bss, 49760K reserved, 0K cma-reserved,
  2244488K highmem)

After:
  Memory: 3095276K/3145208K available (14802K kernel code, 2073K rwdata,
  5000K rodata, 740K init, 556K bss, 49932K reserved, 0K cma-reserved,
  2244488K highmem)

This patch (of 2):

Can we get rid of the highmem ifdef in adjust_managed_page_count()?
Likely yes: we don't have that many totalhigh_pages() users, and they all
don't seem to be very performance critical.

So let's implement totalhigh_pages() like nr_free_highpages(), collecting
information from all zones. This is now similar to what we do in
si_meminfo_node() to collect the per-node highmem page count.

In the common case (single node, 3-4 zones), we really shouldn't care. We
could optimize a bit further (only walk ZONE_HIGHMEM and ZONE_MOVABLE if
required), but there doesn't seem a real need for that.

43132282d8 x86/kexec: use pr_err() instead of kexec_dprintk() when an error occurs
When detecting an error, the current code uses kexec_dprintk() to output
log message. This is not quite appropriate as kexec_dprintk() is mainly
used for outputting debugging messages, rather than error messages.

Replace kexec_dprintk() with pr_err(). This also makes the output method
for this error log align with the output method for other error logs in
this function.

Additionally, the last return statement in set_page_address() is
unnecessary, remove it.

c33c794828 mm: ptep_get() conversion
Convert all instances of direct pte_t* dereferencing to instead use
ptep_get() helper. This means that by default, the accesses change from a
C dereference to a READ_ONCE(). This is technically the correct thing to
do since where pgtables are modified by HW (for access/dirty) they are
volatile and therefore we should always ensure READ_ONCE() semantics.

But more importantly, by always using the helper, it can be overridden by
the architecture to fully encapsulate the contents of the pte. Arch code
is deliberately not converted, as the arch code knows best. It is
intended that arch code (arm64) will override the default with its own
implementation that can (e.g.) hide certain bits from the core code, or
determine young/dirty status by mixing in state from another source.

Conversion was done using Coccinelle:

----

// $ make coccicheck \
//          COCCI=ptepget.cocci \
//          SPFLAGS="--include-headers" \
//          MODE=patch

virtual patch

@ depends on patch @
pte_t *v;
@@

- *v
+ ptep_get(v)

----

Then reviewed and hand-edited to avoid multiple unnecessary calls to
ptep_get(), instead opting to store the result of a single call in a
variable, where it is correct to do so. This aims to negate any cost of
READ_ONCE() and will benefit arch-overrides that may be more complex.

Included is a fix for an issue in an earlier version of this patch that
was pointed out by kernel test robot. The issue arose because config
MMU=n elides definition of the ptep helper functions, including
ptep_get().  HUGETLB_PAGE=n configs still define a simple
huge_ptep_clear_flush() for linking purposes, which dereferences the ptep.
So when both configs are disabled, this caused a build error because
ptep_get() is not defined. Fix by continuing to do a direct dereference
when MMU=n. This is safe because for this config the arch code cannot be
trying to virtualize the ptes because none of the ptep helpers are
defined.

ef6e06b2ef highmem: fix kmap_to_page() for kmap_local_page() addresses
kmap_to_page() is used to get the page for a virtual address which may
be kmap'ed. Unfortunately, kmap_local_page() stores mappings in a
thread local array separate from kmap(). These mappings were not
checked by the call.

Check the kmap_local_page() mappings and return the page if found.

Because it is intended to remove kmap_to_page() add a warn on once to
the kmap checks to flag potential issues early.

NOTE Due to 32bit x86 use of kmap local in iomap atmoic, KMAP_LOCAL does
not require HIGHMEM to be set. Therefore the support calls required a
new KMAP_LOCAL section to fix 0day build errors.

39ade048a3 highmem: Make __kunmap_{local,atomic}() take const void pointer
__kunmap_ {local,atomic}() currently take pointers to void. However, this
is semantically incorrect, since these functions do not change the memory
their arguments point to.

Therefore, make this semantics explicit by modifying the
__kunmap_{local,atomic}() prototypes to take pointers to const void.

As a side effect, compilers may produce more efficient code.

259ecb34e2 mm/highmem: pass a pointer to virt_to_page()
Functions that work on a pointer to virtual memory such as virt_to_pfn()
and users of that function such as virt_to_page() are supposed to pass a
pointer to virtual memory, ideally a (void *) or other pointer. However
since many architectures implement virt_to_pfn() as a macro, this function
becomes polymorphic and accepts both a (unsigned long) and a (void *).

If we instead implement a proper virt_to_pfn(void *addr) function the
following happens (occurred on arch/arm):

mm/highmem.c:153:29: warning: passing argument 1 of
  'virt_to_pfn' makes pointer from integer without a
  cast [-Wint-conversion]

We already have a proper void * pointer in the scope of this function
named "vaddr" so pass that instead.

Pull folio fixes from Matthew Wilcox:
 "In the course of preparing the folio changes for iomap for next merge
  window, we discovered some problems that would be nice to address now:

   - Renaming multi-page folios to large folios.

     mapping_multi_page_folio_support() is just a little too long, so we
     settled on mapping_large_folio_support(). That meant renaming, eg
     folio_test_multi() to folio_test_large().

     Rename AS_THP_SUPPORT to match

   - I hadn't included folio wrappers for zero_user_segments(), etc.
     Also, multi-page^W^W large folio support is now independent of
     CONFIG_TRANSPARENT_HUGEPAGE, so machines with HIGHMEM always need
     to fall back to the out-of-line zero_user_segments().

     Remove FS_THP_SUPPORT to match

   - The build bots finally got round to telling me that I missed a
     couple of architectures when adding flush_dcache_folio(). Christoph
     suggested that we just add linux/cacheflush.h and not rely on
     asm-generic/cacheflush.h"

825c43f50e kmap_local: don't assume kmap PTEs are linear arrays in memory
The kmap_local conversion broke the ARM architecture, because the new
code assumes that all PTEs used for creating kmaps form a linear array
in memory, and uses array indexing to look up the kmap PTE belonging to
a certain kmap index.

On ARM, this cannot work, not only because the PTE pages may be
non-adjacent in memory, but also because ARM/!LPAE interleaves hardware
entries and extended entries (carrying software-only bits) in a way that
is not compatible with array indexing.

Fortunately, this only seems to affect configurations with more than 8
CPUs, due to the way the per-CPU kmap slots are organized in memory.

Work around this by permitting an architecture to set a Kconfig symbol
that signifies that the kmap PTEs do not form a lineary array in memory,
and so the only way to locate the appropriate one is to walk the page
tables.

c035713998 mm: Add functions to zero portions of a folio
These functions are wrappers around zero_user_segments(), which means
that zero_user_segments() can now be called for compound pages even when
CONFIG_TRANSPARENT_HUGEPAGE is disabled.

Use 'xend' as the name of the parameter to indicate that this is an
excluded end, not the more usual included end. Excluding the end makes
more sense to the callers, but can cause confusion to readers who are
more used to seeing included ends.

f3ba3c710a mm/highmem: Provide kmap_local*
Now that the kmap atomic index is stored in task struct provide a
preemptible variant. On context switch the maps of an outgoing task are
removed and the map of the incoming task are restored. That's obviously
slow, but highmem is slow anyway.

The kmap_local.*() functions can be invoked from both preemptible and
atomic context. kmap local sections disable migration to keep the resulting
virtual mapping address correct, but disable neither pagefaults nor
preemption.

A wholesale conversion of kmap_atomic to be fully preemptible is not
possible because some of the usage sites might rely on the preemption
disable for serialization or on the implicit pagefault disable. Needs to be
done on a case by case basis.

5fbda3ecd1 sched: highmem: Store local kmaps in task struct
Instead of storing the map per CPU provide and use per task storage. That
prepares for local kmaps which are preemptible.

The context switch code is preparatory and not yet in use because
kmap_atomic() runs with preemption disabled. Will be made usable in the
next step.

The context switch logic is safe even when an interrupt happens after
clearing or before restoring the kmaps. The kmap index in task struct is
not modified so any nesting kmap in an interrupt will use unused indices
and on return the counter is the same as before.

Also add an assert into the return to user space code. Going back to user
space with an active kmap local is a nono.

389755c250 highmem: Make DEBUG_HIGHMEM functional
For some obscure reason when CONFIG_DEBUG_HIGHMEM is enabled the stack
depth is increased from 20 to 41. But the only thing DEBUG_HIGHMEM does is
to enable a few BUG_ON()'s in the mapping code.

That's a leftover from the historical mapping code which had fixed entries
for various purposes. DEBUG_HIGHMEM inserted guard mappings between the map
types. But that got all ditched when kmap_atomic() switched to a stack
based map management. Though the WITH_KM_FENCE magic survived without being
functional. All the thing does today is to increase the stack depth.

Add a working implementation to the generic kmap_local* implementation.

186525bd6b mm, x86/mm: Untangle address space layout definitions from basic pgtable type definitions
- Untangle the somewhat incestous way of how VMALLOC_START is used all across the
  kernel, but is, on x86, defined deep inside one of the lowest level page table headers.
  It doesn't help that vmalloc.h only includes a single asm header:

     #include <asm/page.h>           /* pgprot_t */

  So there was no existing cross-arch way to decouple address layout
  definitions from page.h details. I used this:

   #ifndef VMALLOC_START
   # include <asm/vmalloc.h>
   #endif

  This way every architecture that wants to simplify page.h can do so.

ca79b0c211 mm: convert totalram_pages and totalhigh_pages variables to atomic
totalram_pages and totalhigh_pages are made static inline function.

Main motivation was that managed_page_count_lock handling was complicating
things. It was discussed in length here,
https://lore.kernel.org/patchwork/patch/995739/#1181785 So it seemes
better to remove the lock and convert variables to atomic, with preventing
poteintial store-to-read tearing as a bonus.

b24413180f License cleanup: add SPDX GPL-2.0 license identifier to files with no license
Many source files in the tree are missing licensing information, which
makes it harder for compliance tools to determine the correct license.

By default all files without license information are under the default
license of the kernel, which is GPL version 2.

Update the files which contain no license information with the 'GPL-2.0'
SPDX license identifier. The SPDX identifier is a legally binding
shorthand, which can be used instead of the full boiler plate text.

This patch is based on work done by Thomas Gleixner and Kate Stewart and
Philippe Ombredanne.

How this work was done:

Patches were generated and checked against linux-4.14-rc6 for a subset of
the use cases:
 - file had no licensing information it it.
 - file was a */uapi/* one with no licensing information in it,
 - file was a */uapi/* one with existing licensing information,

Further patches will be generated in subsequent months to fix up cases
where non-standard license headers were used, and references to license
had to be inferred by heuristics based on keywords.

The analysis to determine which SPDX License Identifier to be applied to
a file was done in a spreadsheet of side by side results from of the
output of two independent scanners (ScanCode & Windriver) producing SPDX
tag:value files created by Philippe Ombredanne. Philippe prepared the
base worksheet, and did an initial spot review of a few 1000 files.

The 4.13 kernel was the starting point of the analysis with 60,537 files
assessed. Kate Stewart did a file by file comparison of the scanner
results in the spreadsheet to determine which SPDX license identifier(s)
to be applied to the file. She confirmed any determination that was not
immediately clear with lawyers working with the Linux Foundation.

Criteria used to select files for SPDX license identifier tagging was:
 - Files considered eligible had to be source code files.
 - Make and config files were included as candidates if they contained >5
   lines of source
 - File already had some variant of a license header in it (even if <5
   lines).

All documentation files were explicitly excluded.

The following heuristics were used to determine which SPDX license
identifiers to apply.

 - when both scanners couldn't find any license traces, file was
   considered to have no license information in it, and the top level
   COPYING file license applied.

   For non */uapi/* files that summary was:

   SPDX license identifier                            # files
   ---------------------------------------------------|-------
   GPL-2.0                                              11139

   and resulted in the first patch in this series.

   If that file was a */uapi/* path one, it was "GPL-2.0 WITH
   Linux-syscall-note" otherwise it was "GPL-2.0". Results of that was:

   SPDX license identifier                            # files
   ---------------------------------------------------|-------
   GPL-2.0 WITH Linux-syscall-note                        930

   and resulted in the second patch in this series.

 - if a file had some form of licensing information in it, and was one
   of the */uapi/* ones, it was denoted with the Linux-syscall-note if
   any GPL family license was found in the file or had no licensing in
   it (per prior point). Results summary:

   SPDX license identifier                            # files
   ---------------------------------------------------|------
   GPL-2.0 WITH Linux-syscall-note                       270
   GPL-2.0+ WITH Linux-syscall-note                      169
   ((GPL-2.0 WITH Linux-syscall-note) OR BSD-2-Clause)    21
   ((GPL-2.0 WITH Linux-syscall-note) OR BSD-3-Clause)    17
   LGPL-2.1+ WITH Linux-syscall-note                      15
   GPL-1.0+ WITH Linux-syscall-note                       14
   ((GPL-2.0+ WITH Linux-syscall-note) OR BSD-3-Clause)    5
   LGPL-2.0+ WITH Linux-syscall-note                       4
   LGPL-2.1 WITH Linux-syscall-note                        3
   ((GPL-2.0 WITH Linux-syscall-note) OR MIT)              3
   ((GPL-2.0 WITH Linux-syscall-note) AND MIT)             1

   and that resulted in the third patch in this series.

 - when the two scanners agreed on the detected license(s), that became
   the concluded license(s).

 - when there was disagreement between the two scanners (one detected a
   license but the other didn't, or they both detected different
   licenses) a manual inspection of the file occurred.

 - In most cases a manual inspection of the information in the file
   resulted in a clear resolution of the license that should apply (and
   which scanner probably needed to revisit its heuristics).

 - When it was not immediately clear, the license identifier was
   confirmed with lawyers working with the Linux Foundation.

 - If there was any question as to the appropriate license identifier,
   the file was flagged for further research and to be revisited later
   in time.

In total, over 70 hours of logged manual review was done on the
spreadsheet to determine the SPDX license identifiers to apply to the
source files by Kate, Philippe, Thomas and, in some cases, confirmation
by lawyers working with the Linux Foundation.

Kate also obtained a third independent scan of the 4.13 code base from
FOSSology, and compared selected files where the other two scanners
disagreed against that SPDX file, to see if there was new insights. The
Windriver scanner is based on an older version of FOSSology in part, so
they are related.

Thomas did random spot checks in about 500 files from the spreadsheets
for the uapi headers and agreed with SPDX license identifier in the
files he inspected. For the non-uapi files Thomas did random spot checks
in about 15000 files.

In initial set of patches against 4.14-rc6, 3 files were found to have
copy/paste license identifier errors, and have been fixed to reflect the
correct identifier.

Additionally Philippe spent 10 hours this week doing a detailed manual
inspection and review of the 12,461 patched files from the initial patch
version early this week with:
 - a full scancode scan run, collecting the matched texts, detected
   license ids and scores
 - reviewing anything where there was a license detected (about 500+
   files) to ensure that the applied SPDX license was correct
 - reviewing anything where there was no detection but the patch license
   was not GPL-2.0 WITH Linux-syscall-note to ensure that the applied
   SPDX license was correct

This produced a worksheet with 20 files needing minor correction. This
worksheet was then exported into 3 different .csv files for the
different types of files to be modified.

These .csv files were then reviewed by Greg. Thomas wrote a script to
parse the csv files and add the proper SPDX tag to the file, in the
format that the file expected. This script was further refined by Greg
based on the output to detect more types of files automatically and to
distinguish between header and source .c files (which need different
comment types.) Finally Greg ran the script using the .csv files to
generate the patches.

15de36a4c3 mm/highmem: make kmap cache coloring aware
User-visible effect:
 Architectures that choose this method of maintaining cache coherency
(MIPS and xtensa currently) are able to use high memory on cores with
aliasing data cache. Without this fix such architectures can not use
high memory (in case of xtensa it means that at most 128 MBytes of
physical memory is available).

The problem:
 VIPT cache with way size larger than MMU page size may suffer from
aliasing problem: a single physical address accessed via different
virtual addresses may end up in multiple locations in the cache.
Virtual mappings of a physical address that always get cached in
different cache locations are said to have different colors. L1 caching
hardware usually doesn't handle this situation leaving it up to
software. Software must avoid this situation as it leads to data
corruption.

What can be done:
 One way to handle this is to flush and invalidate data cache every time
page mapping changes color. The other way is to always map physical
page at a virtual address with the same color. Low memory pages already
have this property. Giving architecture a way to control color of high
memory page mapping allows reusing of existing low memory cache alias
handling code.

How this is done with this patch:
 Provide hooks that allow architectures with aliasing cache to align
mapping address of high pages according to their color. Such
architectures may enforce similar coloring of low- and high-memory page
mappings and reuse existing cache management functions to support
highmem.

This code is based on the implementation of similar feature for MIPS by
Leonid Yegoshin.

498c228021 mm: highmem: don't treat PKMAP_ADDR(LAST_PKMAP) as a highmem address
kmap_to_page returns the corresponding struct page for a virtual address
of an arbitrary mapping. This works by checking whether the address
falls in the pkmap region and using the pkmap page tables instead of the
linear mapping if appropriate.

Unfortunately, the bounds checking means that PKMAP_ADDR(LAST_PKMAP) is
incorrectly treated as a highmem address and we can end up walking off
the end of pkmap_page_table and subsequently passing junk to pte_page.

This patch fixes the bound check to stay within the pkmap tables.
