c1558bc57b gcov: add support for GCC 14
Using gcov on kernels compiled with GCC 14 results in truncated 16-byte
long .gcda files with no usable data.  To fix this, update GCOV_COUNTERS
to match the value defined by GCC 14.

Tested with GCC versions 14.1.0 and 13.2.0.

fbd126f5a6 gcov: annotate struct gcov_iterator with __counted_by
Prepare for the coming implementation by GCC and Clang of the __counted_by
attribute.  Flexible array members annotated with __counted_by can have
their accesses bounds-checked at run-time checking via CONFIG_UBSAN_BOUNDS
(for array indexing) and CONFIG_FORTIFY_SOURCE (for strcpy/memcpy-family
functions).

As found with Coccinelle[1], add __counted_by for struct gcov_iterator.

e96b95c2b7 gcov: add support for checksum field
In GCC version 12.1 a checksum field was added.

This patch fixes a kernel crash occurring during boot when using
gcov-kernel with GCC version 12.2.  The crash occurred on a system running
on i.MX6SX.

977ef30a7d gcov: support GCC 12.1 and newer compilers
Starting with GCC 12.1, the created .gcda format can't be read by gcov
tool.  There are 2 significant changes to the .gcda file format that
need to be supported:

a) [gcov: Use system IO buffering]
   (23eb66d1d46a34cb28c4acbdf8a1deb80a7c5a05) changed that all sizes in
   the format are in bytes and not in words (4B)

b) [gcov: make profile merging smarter]
   (72e0c742bd01f8e7e6dcca64042b9ad7e75979de) add a new checksum to the
   file header.

Tested with GCC 7.5, 10.4, 12.2 and the current master.

51c2ee6d12 Kconfig: Introduce ARCH_WANTS_NO_INSTR and CC_HAS_NO_PROFILE_FN_ATTR
We don't want compiler instrumentation to touch noinstr functions,
which are annotated with the no_profile_instrument_function function
attribute. Add a Kconfig test for this and make GCOV depend on it, and
in the future, PGO.

If an architecture is using noinstr, it should denote that via this
Kconfig value. That makes Kconfigs that depend on noinstr able to express
dependencies in an architecturally agnostic way.

9b472e85d0 gcov: clang: drop support for clang-10 and older
LLVM changed the expected function signatures for llvm_gcda_start_file()
and llvm_gcda_emit_function() in the clang-11 release.  Drop the older
implementations and require folks to upgrade their compiler if they're
interested in GCOV support.

1391efa952 gcov: use kvmalloc()
Using vmalloc() in gcov is really quite wasteful, many of the objects
allocated are really small (e.g.  I've seen 24 bytes.) Use kvmalloc() to
automatically pick the better of kmalloc() or vmalloc() depending on the
size.

7a1d55b987 gcov: combine common code
There's a lot of duplicated code between gcc and clang implementations,
move it over to fs.c to simplify the code, there's no reason to believe
that for small data like this one would not just implement the simple
convert_to_gcda() function.

9562fd1329 gcov: re-fix clang-11+ support
LLVM changed the expected function signature for llvm_gcda_emit_function()
in the clang-11 release.  Users of clang-11 or newer may have noticed
their kernels producing invalid coverage information:

  $ llvm-cov gcov -a -c -u -f -b <input>.gcda -- gcno=<input>.gcno
  1 <func>: checksum mismatch, \
    (<lineno chksum A>, <cfg chksum B>) != (<lineno chksum A>, <cfg chksum C>)
  2 Invalid .gcda File!
  ...

Fix up the function signatures so calling this function interprets its
parameters correctly and computes the correct cfg checksum.  In
particular, in clang-11, the additional checksum is no longer optional.

60bcf728ee gcov: fix clang-11+ support
LLVM changed the expected function signatures for llvm_gcda_start_file()
and llvm_gcda_emit_function() in the clang-11 release.  Users of
clang-11 or newer may have noticed their kernels failing to boot due to
a panic when enabling CONFIG_GCOV_KERNEL=y +CONFIG_GCOV_PROFILE_ALL=y.
Fix up the function signatures so calling these functions doesn't panic
the kernel.

55b6f763d8 init/gcov: allow CONFIG_CONSTRUCTORS on UML to fix module gcov
On ARCH=um, loading a module doesn't result in its constructors getting
called, which breaks module gcov since the debugfs files are never
registered.  On the other hand, in-kernel constructors have already been
called by the dynamic linker, so we can't call them again.

Get out of this conundrum by allowing CONFIG_CONSTRUCTORS to be
selected, but avoiding the in-kernel constructor calls.

Also remove the "if !UML" from GCOV selecting CONSTRUCTORS now, since we
really do want CONSTRUCTORS, just not kernel binary ones.

99b75eb7c8 gcov: remove support for GCC < 4.9
Since commit 0bddd227f3 ("Documentation: update for gcc 4.9
requirement") the minimum supported version of GCC is gcc-4.9.  It's now
safe to remove this code.

Similar to commit 10415533a9 ("gcov: Remove old GCC 3.4 support") but
that was for GCC 4.8 and this is for GCC 4.9.

causes random malfunctions and kernel crashes.  This is the result of a
changed GCOV_COUNTERS value in GCC 10.1 that causes a mismatch between
the layout of the gcov_info structure created by GCC profiling code and
the related structure used by the kernel.

Fix this by updating the in-kernel GCOV_COUNTERS value.  Also re-enable
config GCOV_KERNEL for use with GCC 10.

cfc905f158 gcov: Disable gcov build with GCC 10
GCOV built with GCC 10 doesn't initialize n_function variable.  This
produces different kernel panics as was seen by Colin in Ubuntu and me
in FC 32.

As a workaround, let's disable GCOV build for broken GCC 10 version.

a7f7f6248d treewide: replace '---help---' in Kconfig files with 'help'
Since commit 84af7a6194 ("checkpatch: kconfig: prefer 'help' over
'---help---'"), the number of '---help---' has been gradually
decreasing, but there are still more than 2400 instances.

This commit finishes the conversion. While I touched the lines,
I also fixed the indentation.

There are a variety of indentation styles found.

  b) 7 spaces + '---help---'
  c) 8 spaces + '---help---'
  d) 1 space + 1 tab + '---help---'
  e) 1 tab + '---help---'    (correct indentation)

may not be applied.  As a quirk of the original implementation of
zero-length arrays, sizeof evaluates to zero."[1]

87c9366e17 Revert "um: Enable CONFIG_CONSTRUCTORS"
This reverts commit 786b2384bf ("um: Enable CONFIG_CONSTRUCTORS").

There are two issues with this commit, uncovered by Anton in tests
on some (Debian) systems:

1) I completely forgot to call any constructors if CONFIG_CONSTRUCTORS
   isn't set. Don't recall now if it just wasn't needed on my system, or
   if I never tested this case.

2) With that fixed, it works - with CONFIG_CONSTRUCTORS *unset*. If I
   set CONFIG_CONSTRUCTORS, it fails again, which isn't totally
   unexpected since whatever wanted to run is likely to have to run
   before the kernel init etc. that calls the constructors in this case.

Basically, some constructors that gcc emits (libc has?) need to run
very early during init; the failure mode otherwise was that the ptrace
fork test already failed:

Thinking more about this, it's clear that we simply cannot support
CONFIG_CONSTRUCTORS in UML. All the cases we need now (gcov, kasan)
involve not use of the __attribute__((constructor)), but instead
some constructor code/entry generated by gcc. Therefore, we cannot
distinguish between kernel constructors and system constructors.

Thus, revert this commit.

786b2384bf um: Enable CONFIG_CONSTRUCTORS
We do need to call the constructors for *modules*, and
at least for KASAN in the future, we must call even the
kernel constructors only later when the kernel has been
initialized.

Instead of relying on libc to call them, emit an empty
section for libc and let the kernel's CONSTRUCTORS code
do the rest of the job.

Tested that it indeed doesn't work in modules, and does
work after the fixes in both, with a few functions with
__attribute__((constructor)) in both dynamic and static
builds.

e178a5beb3 gcov: clang support
LLVM uses profiling data that's deliberately similar to GCC, but has a
very different way of exporting that data.  LLVM calls llvm_gcov_init()
once per module, and provides a couple of callbacks that we can use to
ask for more data.

We care about the "writeout" callback, which in turn calls back into
compiler-rt/this module to dump all the gathered coverage data to disk:

   llvm_gcda_start_file()
     llvm_gcda_emit_function()
     llvm_gcda_emit_arcs()
     llvm_gcda_emit_function()
     llvm_gcda_emit_arcs()
     [... repeats for each function ...]
   llvm_gcda_summary_info()
   llvm_gcda_end_file()

This design is much more stateless and unstructured than gcc's, and is
intended to run at process exit.  This forces us to keep some local
state about which module we're dealing with at the moment.  On the other
hand, it also means we don't depend as much on how LLVM represents
profiling data internally.

See LLVM's lib/Transforms/Instrumentation/GCOVProfiling.cpp for more
details on how this works, particularly GCOVProfiler::emitProfileArcs(),
GCOVProfiler::insertCounterWriteout(), and GCOVProfiler::insertFlush().

9abdb50cda kernel/gcov/gcc_3_4.c: use struct_size() in kzalloc()
One of the more common cases of allocation size calculations is finding
the size of a structure that has a zero-sized array at the end, along
with memory for some number of elements for that array.  For example:

  struct foo {
      int stuff;
      void *entry[];
  };

  instance = kzalloc(sizeof(struct foo) + sizeof(void *) * count, GFP_KERNEL);

Instead of leaving these open-coded and prone to type mistakes, we can
now use the new struct_size() helper:

  instance = kzalloc(struct_size(instance, entry, count), GFP_KERNEL);

This code was detected with the help of Coccinelle.

6a61b70b43 gcov: remove CONFIG_GCOV_FORMAT_AUTODETECT
CONFIG_GCOV_FORMAT_AUTODETECT compiles either gcc_3_4.c or gcc_4_7.c
according to your GCC version.

We can achieve the equivalent behavior by setting reasonable dependency
with the knowledge of the compiler version.

If GCC older than 4.7 is used, GCOV_FORMAT_3_4 is the default, but users
are still allowed to select GCOV_FORMAT_4_7 in case the newer format is
back-ported.

On the other hand, If GCC 4.7 or newer is used, there is no reason to
use GCOV_FORMAT_3_4, so it should be hidden.

If you downgrade the compiler to GCC 4.7 or older, oldconfig/syncconfig
will display a prompt for the choice because GCOV_FORMAT_3_4 becomes
visible as a new symbol.

b24413180f License cleanup: add SPDX GPL-2.0 license identifier to files with no license
Many source files in the tree are missing licensing information, which
makes it harder for compliance tools to determine the correct license.

By default all files without license information are under the default
license of the kernel, which is GPL version 2.

Update the files which contain no license information with the 'GPL-2.0'
SPDX license identifier.  The SPDX identifier is a legally binding
shorthand, which can be used instead of the full boiler plate text.

This patch is based on work done by Thomas Gleixner and Kate Stewart and
Philippe Ombredanne.

How this work was done:

Patches were generated and checked against linux-4.14-rc6 for a subset of
the use cases:
 - file had no licensing information it it.
 - file was a */uapi/* one with no licensing information in it,
 - file was a */uapi/* one with existing licensing information,

Further patches will be generated in subsequent months to fix up cases
where non-standard license headers were used, and references to license
had to be inferred by heuristics based on keywords.

The analysis to determine which SPDX License Identifier to be applied to
a file was done in a spreadsheet of side by side results from of the
output of two independent scanners (ScanCode & Windriver) producing SPDX
tag:value files created by Philippe Ombredanne.  Philippe prepared the
base worksheet, and did an initial spot review of a few 1000 files.

The 4.13 kernel was the starting point of the analysis with 60,537 files
assessed.  Kate Stewart did a file by file comparison of the scanner
results in the spreadsheet to determine which SPDX license identifier(s)
to be applied to the file. She confirmed any determination that was not
immediately clear with lawyers working with the Linux Foundation.

Criteria used to select files for SPDX license identifier tagging was:
 - Files considered eligible had to be source code files.
 - Make and config files were included as candidates if they contained >5
   lines of source
 - File already had some variant of a license header in it (even if <5
   lines).

All documentation files were explicitly excluded.

The following heuristics were used to determine which SPDX license
identifiers to apply.

 - when both scanners couldn't find any license traces, file was
   considered to have no license information in it, and the top level
   COPYING file license applied.

   For non */uapi/* files that summary was:

   SPDX license identifier                            # files
   ---------------------------------------------------|-------

   and resulted in the first patch in this series.

   If that file was a */uapi/* path one, it was "GPL-2.0 WITH

 - when the two scanners agreed on the detected license(s), that became
   the concluded license(s).

 - when there was disagreement between the two scanners (one detected a
   license but the other didn't, or they both detected different
   licenses) a manual inspection of the file occurred.

 - In most cases a manual inspection of the information in the file
   resulted in a clear resolution of the license that should apply (and
   which scanner probably needed to revisit its heuristics).

 - When it was not immediately clear, the license identifier was
   confirmed with lawyers working with the Linux Foundation.

 - If there was any question as to the appropriate license identifier,
   the file was flagged for further research and to be revisited later
   in time.

In total, over 70 hours of logged manual review was done on the
spreadsheet to determine the SPDX license identifiers to apply to the
source files by Kate, Philippe, Thomas and, in some cases, confirmation
by lawyers working with the Linux Foundation.

Kate also obtained a third independent scan of the 4.13 code base from
FOSSology, and compared selected files where the other two scanners
disagreed against that SPDX file, to see if there was new insights.  The
Windriver scanner is based on an older version of FOSSology in part, so
they are related.

Thomas did random spot checks in about 500 files from the spreadsheets
for the uapi headers and agreed with SPDX license identifier in the
files he inspected. For the non-uapi files Thomas did random spot checks
in about 15000 files.

In initial set of patches against 4.14-rc6, 3 files were found to have
copy/paste license identifier errors, and have been fixed to reflect the
correct identifier.

Additionally Philippe spent 10 hours this week doing a detailed manual
inspection and review of the 12,461 patched files from the initial patch
version early this week with:
 - a full scancode scan run, collecting the matched texts, detected
   license ids and scores
 - reviewing anything where there was a license detected (about 500+
   files) to ensure that the applied SPDX license was correct
 - reviewing anything where there was no detection but the patch license
   was not GPL-2.0 WITH Linux-syscall-note to ensure that the applied
   SPDX license was correct

This produced a worksheet with 20 files needing minor correction.  This
worksheet was then exported into 3 different .csv files for the
different types of files to be modified.

These .csv files were then reviewed by Greg.  Thomas wrote a script to
parse the csv files and add the proper SPDX tag to the file, in the
format that the file expected.  This script was further refined by Greg
based on the output to detect more types of files automatically and to
distinguish between header and source .c files (which need different
comment types.)  Finally Greg ran the script using the .csv files to
generate the patches.

cc62242079 gcov: disable for COMPILE_TEST
Enabling gcov is counterproductive to compile testing: it significantly
increases the kernel image size, compile time, and it produces lots
of false positive "may be used uninitialized" warnings as the result
of missed optimizations.

This is in line with how UBSAN_SANITIZE_ALL and PROFILE_ALL_BRANCHES
work, both of which have similar problems.

With an ARM allmodconfig kernel, I see the build time drop from
283 minutes CPU time to 225 minutes, and the vmlinux size drops
from 43MB to 26MB.

3e44c471a2 gcov: add support for GCC 5.1
Fix kernel gcov support for GCC 5.1.  Similar to commit a992bf836f
("gcov: add support for GCC 4.9"), this patch takes into account the
existence of a new gcov counter (see gcc's gcc/gcov-counter.def.)

Firstly, it increments GCOV_COUNTERS (to 10), which makes the data
structure struct gcov_info compatible with GCC 5.1.

Secondly, a corresponding counter function __gcov_merge_icall_topn (Top N
value tracking for indirect calls) is included in base.c with the other
gcov counters unused for kernel profiling.

957e3facd1 gcov: enable GCOV_PROFILE_ALL from ARCH Kconfigs
Following the suggestions from Andrew Morton and Stephen Rothwell,
Dont expand the ARCH list in kernel/gcov/Kconfig. Instead,
define a ARCH_HAS_GCOV_PROFILE_ALL bool which architectures
can enable.

set ARCH_HAS_GCOV_PROFILE_ALL on Architectures where it was
previously allowed + ARM64 which I tested.
