xfs_bmapi_write can return 0 without actually returning a mapping in
mval in two different cases:
1) when there is absolutely no space available to do an allocation
2) when converting delalloc space, and the allocation is so small
that it only covers parts of the delalloc extent before the
range requested by the caller
Callers at best can handle one of these cases, but in many cases can't
cope with either one. Switch xfs_bmapi_write to always return a
mapping or return an error code instead. For case 1) above ENOSPC is
the obvious choice which is very much what the callers expect anyway.
For case 2) there is no really good error code, so pick a funky one
from the SysV streams portfolio.
This fixes the reproducer here:
https://lore.kernel.org/linux-xfs/CAEJPjCvT3Uag-pMTYuigEjWZHn1sGMZ0GCjVVCv29tNHK76Cgg@mail.gmail.com0/
which uses reserved blocks to create file systems that are gravely
out of space and thus cause at least xfs_file_alloc_space to hang
and trigger the lack of ENOSPC handling in xfs_dquot_disk_alloc.
Note that this patch does not actually make any caller but
xfs_alloc_file_space deal intelligently with case 2) above.

In converting the XFS code from GFP_NOFS to scoped contexts, we
converted the quota radix tree to GFP_KERNEL. Unfortunately, it was
not clearly documented that this set was because there is a
dependency on the quotainfo->qi_tree_lock being taken in memory
reclaim to remove dquots from the radix tree.
In hindsight this is obvious, but the radix tree allocations on
insert are not immediately obvious, and we avoid this for the inode
cache radix trees by using preloading and hence completely avoiding
the radix tree node allocation under tree lock constraints.
Hence there are a few solutions here. The first is to reinstate
GFP_NOFS for the radix tree and add a comment explaining why
GFP_NOFS is used. The second is to use memalloc_nofs_save() on the
radix tree insert context, which makes it obvious that the radix
tree insert runs under GFP_NOFS constraints. The third option is to
simply replace the radix tree and it's lock with an xarray which can
do memory allocation safely in an insert context.
The first is OK, but not really the direction we want to head. The
second is my preferred short term solution. The third - converting
XFS radix trees to xarray - is the longer term solution.
Hence to fix the regression here, we take option 2 as it moves us in
the direction we want to head with memory allocation and GFP_NOFS
removal.

Upon a closer inspection of the quota record scrubber, I noticed that
dqiterate wasn't actually walking all possible dquots for the mapped
blocks in the quota file. This is due to xfs_qm_dqget_next skipping all
XFS_IS_DQUOT_UNINITIALIZED dquots.
For a fsck program, we really want to look at all the dquots, even if
all counters and limits in the dquot record are zero. Rewrite the
implementation to do this, as well as switching to an iterator paradigm
to reduce the number of indirect calls.
This enables removal of the old broken dqiterate code from xfs_dquot.c.

Patch series "workload-specific and memory pressure-driven zswap
writeback", v8.
There are currently several issues with zswap writeback:
1. There is only a single global LRU for zswap, making it impossible to
perform worload-specific shrinking - an memcg under memory pressure
cannot determine which pages in the pool it owns, and often ends up
writing pages from other memcgs. This issue has been previously
observed in practice and mitigated by simply disabling
memcg-initiated shrinking:
https://lore.kernel.org/all/20230530232435.3097106-1-nphamcs@gmail.com/T/#u
But this solution leaves a lot to be desired, as we still do not
have an avenue for an memcg to free up its own memory locked up in
the zswap pool.
2. We only shrink the zswap pool when the user-defined limit is hit.
This means that if we set the limit too high, cold data that are
unlikely to be used again will reside in the pool, wasting precious
memory. It is hard to predict how much zswap space will be needed
ahead of time, as this depends on the workload (specifically, on
factors such as memory access patterns and compressibility of the
memory pages).
This patch series solves these issues by separating the global zswap LRU
into per-memcg and per-NUMA LRUs, and performs workload-specific (i.e
memcg- and NUMA-aware) zswap writeback under memory pressure. The new
shrinker does not have any parameter that must be tuned by the user, and
can be opted in or out on a per-memcg basis.
As a proof of concept, we ran the following synthetic benchmark: build the
linux kernel in a memory-limited cgroup, and allocate some cold data in
tmpfs to see if the shrinker could write them out and improved the overall
performance. Depending on the amount of cold data generated, we observe
from 14% to 35% reduction in kernel CPU time used in the kernel builds.
This patch (of 6):
The interface of list_lru is based on the assumption that the list node
and the data it represents belong to the same allocated on the correct
node/memcg. While this assumption is valid for existing slab objects LRU
such as dentries and inodes, it is undocumented, and rather inflexible for
certain potential list_lru users (such as the upcoming zswap shrinker and
the THP shrinker). It has caused us a lot of issues during our
development.
This patch changes list_lru interface so that the caller must explicitly
specify numa node and memcg when adding and removing objects. The old
list_lru_add() and list_lru_del() are renamed to list_lru_add_obj() and
list_lru_del_obj(), respectively.
It also extends the list_lru API with a new function, list_lru_putback,
which undoes a previous list_lru_isolate call. Unlike list_lru_add, it
does not increment the LRU node count (as list_lru_isolate does not
decrement the node count). list_lru_putback also allows for explicit
memcg and NUMA node selection.

Online fsck depends on callers holding ILOCK_EXCL from the time they
decide to update a block mapping until after they've updated the reverse
mapping records to guarantee the stability of both mapping records.
Unfortunately, the quota code drops ILOCK_EXCL at the first transaction
roll in the dquot allocation process, which breaks that assertion. This
leads to sporadic failures in the online rmap repair code if the repair
code grabs the AGF after bmapi_write maps a new block into the quota
file's data fork but before it can finish the deferred rmap update.
Fix this by rewriting the function to hold the ILOCK until after the
transaction commit like all other bmap updates do, and get rid of the

In commit afeda6000b, I was trying to improve ondisk dquot validation
by making sure that when we load an ondisk dquot into memory on behalf
of an incore dquot, the dquot id and type matches. Unfortunately, I
forgot that V4 filesystems only have two quota files, and can switch
that file between group and project quota types at mount time. When we
perform that switch, we'll try to load the default quota limits from the
root dquot prior to running quotacheck and log a corruption error when
the types don't match.
This is inconsequential because quotacheck will reset the second quota
file as part of doing the switch, but we shouldn't leave scary messages
in the kernel log.

The ondisk dquot stores the quota record type in the flags field.
Rename this field to d_type to make the _type relationship between the
ondisk and incore dquot more obvious.

Create a new type (xfs_dqtype_t) to represent the type of an incore
dquot (user, group, project, or none). Rename the incore dquot's
dq_flags field to q_type.
This allows us to replace all the "uint type" arguments to the quota
functions with "xfs_dqtype_t type", to make it obvious when we're
passing a quota type argument into a function.

Always use the xfs_dquot_type helper to extract the quota type from an
incore dquot. This moves responsibility for filtering internal state
information and whatnot to anybody passing around a struct xfs_dquot.

We're going to split up the incore dquot state flags from the ondisk
dquot flags (eventually renaming this "type") so start by renaming the
three flags and the bitmask that are going to participate in this.
